The clang and clatter of the boot, which he'd found buried in the Steppe's snow, fell against the stone archway of the veins and broke the silence of the warm Birdsong evening. Birch still felt the cold as if it was a part of him. The transition back into the world outside of the steppe had been taxing and time consuming. What wasn't seen in aching muscles showed on his battered and ice-soaked pelt. What little leaves had been left had long since withered and died, and a coat that should have long since begun to turn colors stayed white and pure.

He should have felt more thankful for life after having been so close to death- anyone else would have. But he felt only a dull ache in his bones and a desire for it all to have ended then. This magic was not worth living for; nor was the cause of The Grey or the thrill of the fight. They were all just accessories.

But still he returned standing proud, even if a little less tall from the weary slope in his spine. His blood flecked eyes sought the presence of the god that had tasked him with solitude and living death, but there was only silence and the hiss of lethargic, multicolored lava.

The God of the Earth watched the melancholy half-tree return after a winter of surviving the bitter cold of the Steppe. He descended from the sky on massive, feathered wings and landed roughly on the ground, his solid hooves shaking the small island in the middle of churning lava. Red eyes stared back into emerald in a disturbing way, but the God could not go back on his promise now.

"You have survived and you have learned what it will mean to wield your magic. " With a small grimace, the god closed his eyes and summed a torrent of water to fall from the sky. It gathered around Birch's hooves and then spiraled over his body, washing his coat and the flicking the ice from his body. Then, it seemed to sink beneath his skin and settle into his very bones, becoming a part of his body and tied to his soul.

"Use it wisely."
