Yseulte took a deep breath and began the climb.

The rocky trail twisted and snaked up the mountain as gentle sighs of wind whispered through the rocks in in soft whistles. She gritted her teeth, despising the oppressive fog that blinded and disoriented her. The immensity of the mountain and the thickness of the fog made her feel insignificant and hopelessly lost. She understood the riddle clearly now, as she stole through the shadows, and wondered, indeed, if there was ever to be an end in sight.

She glanced up to the fog, but it was still as thick as ever. She wagered she wasn't all that far from the top as she had been traveling a very long time.

She moved like a wraith—silent as a shooting star arcing across the night sky. Every so often she would pause, listening intently to her surroundings. But it was all for nothing, as she could only see shrouded mist and only hear her heart drumming in her chest and the sighs the wind all around her. She waited for the wolves to ambush her, as they surely would.

Osiris would not be there to save her, this time. This time, Yseulte was alone. And how she hated the silence that solitude brought with it. She wished he were still here, he and his violet eyed dragon. But she could not risk foolish actions that would most certainly condemn the cub—her cub—to death.

The wolves waited for the unicorn mare to finally arrive, knowing that she would heed their warning and come alone. If she didn't ... well then she had better hope the cub could fly otherwise it would be taking a plunge over the top of the mountain. The dark male wolf could smell her very enticing scent, it made his mouth water at the very thought of having horseflesh for dinner.

"Come now!" He growled into the mist. "You've kept us waiting for quite some time."

A subtle tilt of his head prompted his second in command to grab the cub and move swiftly to the meadow's edge where he dangled the defenseless cub over the side. "If you've come alone the cub is in no danger of falling." He warned the unicorn as he waited for her to show herself.

The alpha then stood and began to pace back and forth through the meadow. "Come out, come out wherever you are." He growled roughly. The rest of his pack snickered, but stayed in hiding as they waited. "We don't have all day."

She could hear their cowardly voices rising and falling in the distance, ringing with malicious laughter and tangled with snarls. More than anything, she could not not stand a coward. Back stabbers, liars, thieves, and dare she even think it--murderers, she could deal with. They were her people after all—she would not pretend to be better than the lowliest of the low. But cowards? Just thinking the word left a bitter taste in her mouth.

Better to die a thousand deaths than to live an entire lifetime as a coward.

Though he had very few traits worth admiring, her father had been the same way. In fact, he had been the bravest man she had ever known. The thought made her throat ache painfully, but gave her a mild sense of courage at the same time, and she straightened resolutely and strode through the swirling fog and mist, her expression dark with some unreadable emotion. She hesitated as her pearl hooves sifted through something soft and cool, and a sweet scent uncurled like a blooming rose in her nostrils. The smell of wildflowers engulfed her, and yet, there were none to be seen. Sweet memories untangled in her mind, slow and sunlit and soft. The mist seemed to have faded, and her eyes settled on the rolling motions of the small meadow. A sea of sweet grass on the very top of the world. Who would have known?

A snarl snapped her out of her misty-eyed daydream, demanding her presence and angered for being kept waiting. A slight smirk pulled at her lips, but it was very subtle. It seemed the wolf and she shared something in common—hideous impatience. She'd taken a rather long detour, unraveling his silly riddle and so she was glad he was seething at her tardiness. Yseulte was a very straightforward unicorn who preferred charging head on into the unknown, rather than sit uselessly for hours dissecting perilous messages scratched in the snow.

Which is exactly what she had done, of course.

Once in the open, she stopped. A wolf was dangling her cub over the edge of the mountain, but even then in its moment of life or death, she could see it was a fighter, slashing, clawing, and snarling at the wolf's muzzle and chest.

Something along the lines of pride swelled in her chest.

"I am here," she said coldly, her voice so quiet it might have been a whisper from a passing winter wind. She did not mention that she was alone; he could see that for himself. Her proud, cold face was oddly expressionless as those sharp eyes followed the pacing movements of the alpha. She did not waste her breath making foolish demands that he put the cub down safely—she could only hope that he was a wolf who honored his word. And then quite suddenly, she smiled at the wolf, as if she were greeting an old friend.

"Let's dance, you and I."

"No need to announce your presence." The wolf replied easily. "I could smell your stink from miles away." Slowly, his tail ticked back and forth as he gazed steadily at her, easily ignoring the snarling of the small cub and the low growl of the wolf dangling it over the edge. "Unfortunately for you that stink is enticing. Have you ever tasted horseflesh before, girl?" He grinned toothily. "It's quite unlike anything you'll ever try. If you survive you should try it, but I highly doubt you'll be walking away from this."

The alpha began to slowly circle around the unicorn, golden eyes tracing over every inch of her body as he searched for a weakness. All around them the rest of the pack arrived and stood ready to attack at their leader's signal. The wolf dangling the cub over the edge bit down causing the cub to cry out in pain and cease it's fighting.

"Don't worry." The alpha said easily. "After we kill you we'll kill the cub." It was the last thing the wolf said before he darted forward, jaws open as he aimed to bite the mare's right foreleg in an attempt to disable her.

She doesn't hear a word he says.

Every second he wastes his breath speaking and grinning like a fool, she is preparing. Analyzing. Counting the wolves, identifying their location, and forming a plan. Her plan is simple, really. She has only one target, and he has a fat, ugly mouth to go with him. Her eyes are fixed on the alpha, on the bone-white of his leering teeth, on the burning yellow of his eyes. She seems relaxed, almost nonchalant in fact, but in reality, every nerve of her body is on fire and every muscle blazes with adrenaline and her blood is thrumming through her veins, humming with the deadly lull of bloodlust and battle rage.

She has only felt this way once before. A very long, long time ago.

She was a warrior then, back in the days of the scorching desert and sun. Walking through the vast, barren desert one particularly blazing day, she learned a very important lesson. The telltale buzz of a rattler almost sent her sprawling into the sand with fear, but when all was said and done, destroy the head of the sake and the rest of it is rendered ineffective. The alpha is the head of the snake, and the rest of his cronies useless without him.

He lunges. Fool. Yseulte smiles, a very faint, amused smile and she waits, every tendon straining in her body to explode and meet the wolf midway. Patience. Two horse-lengths. Her heart hammers in her chest. One and a half. The blood is pounding in her ears like the roar of a waterfall. One.

In the last fleeting second before the inevitable impact, she braces her body and flings her head down, her horn angled like a spear.

She intends to catch him full on, and drive her deadly horn into his vulnerable throat like a sword.

Being the smaller of the two battling animals, the alpha was quick on his feet, and being a veteran fighter he was able to read the mare's body somewhat successfully. The full impact of her horn was not taken by him. As her head came down his body shifted and twisted so her horn did not plunge through his muscled body. Instead the tip of her horn scraped his side from shoulder to hip as he ducked under her body, after having given up on biting the one leg. With her head down and her momentum, he assumed, going in that direction he aimed to bite her other foreleg.

From behind Yseulte, another wolf came, this one intent on clamping his jaws down on the mare's hock and causing as much damage to the joint as he could. It was a maneuver the wolves had used countless times when taking down other horses and even deer. They would be so preoccupied with the alpha's frontal assault they wouldn't expect anything from the rear.

Tonight they would kill and they would eat like kings.

She could feel her horn graze his side, slicing through skin and fur. But it is little more than a scratch, really. The alpha maneuvers beneath her with breathtaking speed and panic swells in her throat as she loses sight of him for a fleeting moment. Brief pain suddenly flares from her left foreleg as his teeth strike against bone and flesh. She immediately rose into a powerful rear, thrashing her forelegs to beat or fling the wolf away, before coming crashing down, hoping to hear the resounding crunch of wolf beneath her hooves.

Her triumph is short lived, however, and pain such as she has never known streaks through her body, thrumming through her nerves like wildfire. Her mind is consumed with flickering images of vibrant red colors and roaring fire. Despair drowns her as she feels an iron grip of teeth tear and shatter tendons and ligaments alike, knowing in her heart that this injury could finish her if she failed to think quickly. Crippled. Time seems to have slowed. Her heart is too loud in her chest, filling her ears with ringing cries and screeches of pain that never leave her lips.

Even now, she is too proud.

Blood droplets sparkle and glitter like rubies, painting the flowers deep and raw and red. She can taste the metallic stench on her tongue, and her senses are overwhelmed by the deep musk of wild, wild wolf. Rage consumes her next, and kicks blindly rain out, intending to shatter jaws and skulls if she can reach them. All the while, her mind is whirring desperately for solutions, navigating through layers of pain that is threatening to rob her of sight and reason. She whirls away, half-dragging her wounded hind leg as she positions herself with her back against the edge of the cliff so that none may ambush her from behind. They will face the glory of her wrath and rage head on, or they will tumble to their deaths together.

She is alone, but she's only ever been alone.

Let them come.

Her body rises into the sky, but the alpha crouched beneath where her feet were, blood just starting to turn his muzzle pink where he'd bitten into her, was already rolling on his sides to escape the plummet of her hooves. He is not alpha of the pack without reason.

The violet mare's attention is elsewhere anyway as the second wolf drives its fangs into her hock. He can almost taste the fear through the humm of blood coursing into his jaws. It drives him mad with hunger and superiority. He wishes to rip her limb from her body and so he doesn't let go. He doesn't let go even when she's kicked him three times in the gut.

It's the fourth that sends him flying. He remains motionless on the ground, a heap of tangled fur and stains.

That enrages the remainder of the pack. The alpha along with his two brethren charge at the mare as she backs to the cliff. She's foolish to think dancing on the rim is wise, though they have little want to push her over and have to lap their dinner from the splatter found on the ground.

Snarling like thunder and moving like lightning the wolves came at her like an effortless storm. The alpha ran first, flanked on either side by his brothers. Abruptly they pulled ahead, paws so swift they sounded like rain breezing over the earth. Their bodies swallowed the alpha and their teeth flashed as either one aimed for the girl's fetlocks.

From behind, in the moment just before the two split, the alpha leapt onto their backsides and pushed himself into the air, fore paws thrashing for the mare's face while his jaws sought to clamp about her velvet nose.
