Little defective colt skids to a halt when the sound of the companion's heartbeat goes silent, and is replaced once more with the senseless chattering of his father's keepers. The bridle tugs at him and pulls him away from the wood as if living itself; he realizes then he himself is caught upon a branch. And yet, he does not doubt the sentience of the adornment, for its grip seems too tight across his chest where it hangs ragged. Today is not the day it falls across his face as it is meant to; today is not the day he realizes what it is for and where it is from. On such a day, the voices will join together before fading into silence.

Today, now, the voices are louder than anything he has ever before heard. Each one cuts through the sounds of nature and pierces the thin wall of his senses and sanity. He does not search for the source of the screams, he knows it is a part of him, and he must find the shell left in the wake of the heartbeat's end.

He ventures further into the forest, firm legs carrying him across paths known only to his mother and brothers. The heartbeat resumes, and he realizes with a sudden jolt that it never really ceased- that it was never really there. The shadows in the corners of the wood seem to fade as light penetrates the canopy, and with it disappears the illusion of the heartbeat. The voices decrease their volume to a whisper, and in the almost silence, he hears the faint whimper of a puppy.

A small, dark puppy whimpered, its foot caught beneath the root of a gnarled tree. He chewed on the root and tried to escape only to yelp in pain as the root pinched his tender bones. Help? An equine, young like himself, came near. Would he help?

The Deep Forest, however, was full of predators. A hungry, twisted wolf, stunted at birth hungrily eyed the puppy. He did not give a damn if the thing was his own kind; he was hungry. The wolf bared his teeth and approached the puppy, intent to kill.

Little defective colt has only just found the pup when he sees the predator emerge from the shadow. He feels no fear, even in the face of the wolf, for he knows it as nothing different than the companion that rests contentedly and loyally by his brother's side. He remembers how Archibald speaks to Loretta- he wishes he could say those same words to soothe the beast. He wishes Archibald was here now, to tame the creature that stood snarling before him.

But he knows he is alone, at the very least to a certain extent. The puppy struggles beneath the tree branch and he hears her cries, but he is not one with her. The voices make him distinctly aware of his solitude as they whisper of those who have died and left him behind. He isn't sure who they were talking about; he isn't sure they are speaking entirely to him.

And he wonders if the wolf approaching felt that very same pang that threatens his own sanity at times. He looks upon the creature as it advances with a curiously tilted head and notices key features- sees the skin that hangs from his bones and the ribs that poke through flesh- the short, seemingly twisted legs that mark a stunt in growth. The colt feels sympathy towards the enemy and an urge to connect with it as a means of keeping it at bay- and yet he fears this to be impossible. He sees the violence in the heart of the being and understands that it feeds off of the blood and rush that was once forced upon him. They are too different to ever be one.

Looking rather odd, the colt lowers his head and parts his lips to match the advancing wolf. He has never known hunger, but he can see it in the monster's eyes, and perhaps on some base level, he can understand it. The bridle that hangs about his neck begins to glow a bright green, and it lights up his face and reflects off of his own white teeth as they flash unimpressively at the wolf. Quickly he casts a meaningful glance back at the black and scraggly puppy, as if to tell her he will protect her. He is not sure if she understood, nor is he sure of anything.

On new yet sturdy legs that accompany his breed, he charges forward brashly, legs churning and light colored heavy hooves pounding the earth as he bridges the gap. He lifts himself upon pillar-like hind legs, and kicks out with two hooves aimed for the head, and feels a strange rush accompanied with a sense of belonging. This is what he was raised to do- even as a colt he feels the surge of the battle, and he recalls the bloody taste of his baptism, and how it has led him to this point. No gentility rests in the body even of a child; murder is bred young.

The wolf was upset by the colts glowing bridle, and he narrowed his golden eyes, growling menacingly. He curled his lips back to reveal a row of vicious, bright fangs. Just as he made his move forward, the colt's hooves came crashing down on his back, and with a tight yelp, the night creature went running back into the dark, tail between his legs.

But the wolf was not the only predator in the forest that evening. An owl perched on the tree above, letting out a frightful "hoo". Yellow, luminous eyes glanced at the puppy, finding it to be an apt meal for the evening. It flew of the limb, wings spread and talons bared to grab the young, struggling pup.

Little defective colt feels his body slam against the back of the wolf and understands a shocking sensation that he has caused another being pain for the first time. The wolf's shriek is deafening, and mixed with the whispered voices, it brings him a pain he has never before known. He is irked not by the fact that darkness creeps into his heart as he is conditioned to kill, but by the idea that it has been so long coming. The puppy's whimpers keep him motivated even through the confusion of the advancing predators and his own progression to violence.

The owl swoops and he reacts instantaneously, still feeling jittery and strengthened from his success against the wolf. The bridle glows brighter with the sense that he has brought pain into the world, and his face reflects the green glow as he lets out a wild, frightening neigh and bucks up at the diving bird. He will keep the pup safe, no matter how much pain it brings to the world. And he is certain that when she is freed and runs by his side like Loretta to Archibald, there will be no pain. The voices try to convince him otherwise- they lie and whisper poisonously that the pup will turn on him. But he knows better; even in this dark life he trusts in something.

The Owl squinted its lamplike eyes in the bright glow of the bridle, and one of the colt's tiny hooves hit its feathery chest. With a squelch and a screech, it painfully lifted its body back to the sky, keen on finding easier prey.

All the while, a dark jungle cat crept up, using the owl as a distraction. She bared her white fangs and extended a paw full of claws, eager to yank the pup from the limb and feed it to her hungry kittens.

Try as he might, little defective colt is no hero. As the owl flies off stunned, the jungle cat creeps behind and its claws find purchase on the pup that he so longs to protect and harbor. Instantly there is a shriek of pain, and he spins to face the silent killer, his nerves on fire and his instincts roiling with a chance to prove what danger lies within him. He feels a hatred for the jungle cat that he cannot understand, despite its resemblance to his mother as he first remembers seeing her. Perhaps, the voices whisper, that is why the aversion is so strong at all.

But in this desperate moment he refuses to lose faith in the strongest pillar of his weakened faith that is his mother. With a leap he attacks the jungle cat fiercely, not caring what the cost will be to his own body, wanting only to save the pup. She struggles weakly, stuck beneath the root, her back leg bent and the flesh covering it torn by the jungle cat's first hit. He smells the blood, strong as when he first bathed in it, and remembers the taste. The lust propels him forward and positions his hooves down, aimed to strike the great cat's skull. Determination and loyalty to a beast not yet his companion dissolves all fear, even when blue eyes see the reflection of white teeth and hear the low rumble of the cat's growling hiss. He has not known fear now, or ever before in his life- he'll be a good warrior to never know it, but just as quickly the gap in his knowledge could make him a dead one.

The cat, deeply injured by the hooves, slinks off growling and howling in irritation. Her cries alert the forest that the innocent pup has a strong and capable protector, and from now on, it is safe.

Quietly, the whimpering puppy slinks out of the tree branch with Knox's help, and the bond between the two is formed. Grateful for his life, it now devotes it to Knox, but he will take some time and aide to heal his stuck back leg.

[Congrats! Knox has a puppy! After 5 days of posting, the puppy will be fully healed. ]
