Trepidation had plagued her travel northwards, from the Veins of the Gods, stocky legs carrying her to the Secret Grove. Doubt plagued her mind along the journey, wondering if she was doing the right thing, yet it was pointless to go back on her word, especially to the Goddess of the Moon. Romani would be a liar if she said that the Goddess didn’t make her blood freeze with fear, and she was sure that in the whole of Helovia, she wasn’t the only one.

When she arrived at the Grove, it was growing dark. The skies were changing, dancing between hues of blues, reds, and oranges, sending a vibrant display of beauty across the pristine surface of the water. There seemed to be no one else about, and perhaps that was for the better; the palomino didn’t want anyone else to witness what she was going to do. Ever so slowly the Haflinger moved towards the body of water, stepping beneath the embracing arms of a low willow tree and stopping right at the edge of water and land. Looking down, she gazed at her reflection for a few moments, fighting with herself. There was a level of self-loathing that filled her from what she was about to do, as she would forget Xanthos, Abdullah, and little Nayati, but she had already agreed… Surely she couldn’t turn back now. The Goddess had given her specific instructions.

Inhaling deeply before she could change her mind, Romani lowered her head, pressed her lips into the cool liquid, and began to drink.

A smooth mist rises from the surface of the lake and carries itself into your soul as you imbibe. When Birdsong ends, the water will be your tonic- the one thing that can aid your ailing mind. Until then, a hole resides where your loved ones once were. A hole soon to be filled by the newborn cub, lost and alone, that cries at the foot of one of the nearby trees. Its calls may bring you to its side, but the little beast is hungry. Its mother has left it alone, and though it yearns for her milk there is none to drink. Some prey will have to suffice.

Congratulations Romani! You have completed your quest and found the newborn (0 months) white tiger cub. In order to properly bond with it, you will have to hunt and kill five animals within two weeks. Include your prey and attack in your post, and RE will respond with the results. Note that due to the eclipse, you will not be able to feel the emotions of the bonded until Birdsong is over.

As she swallowed the refreshing liquid that the Grove offered, there was a strange feeling that overcame the Haflinger, something odd… A nagging feeling that she had perhaps forgotten something came over her, but when Romani lifted her head the feeling was forgotten and her attention was immediately pulled elsewhere when she heard the bleating, desperate cries of a youngling. It was then that her azure eyes spotted it, a small, helpless white tiger cub sitting alone by the base of a thick willow tree. Tilting her head, the mare felt inexplicably drawn towards the black and white cub and she moved slowly towards it. Once close enough, Romani reached out and pressed her muzzle against the writhing form, nostrils flaring as she inhaled the tiger’s scent. It was almost familiar to her, like it belonged to her or was a part of her, as strange as that sounded…

“Poor thing,” Romani murmured softly, nudging the black and white striped bundle of fur once more, “You’re so alone and hungry. Don’t worry; I’m here for you. I’ll go and get you something to eat, just stay here.” The tiger cub let out another cry of indignation, as if demanding her to hurry. Lifting her head once more, the Haflinger turned her compact body away from the Grove of water and looked back towards the wooded area that surrounded the surface of water. Surely she could find something there for the cub to eat…

With one last glance to the tiger cub, Romani turned and began on her way, eyes keeping track of anything that might serve as food. Coming to a few large rocks, an idea suddenly struck the mare and she stopped, pressing her head against the large stones to turn them over. Perhaps a snake would be under them? Surely the cub would eat a snake… The first stone proved empty, as nothing but muddy dirt lay beneath it, but luck was on her side when she turned the second one over. A snake lay coiled against the cool earth, and inhaling sharply, Romani drew herself up at a small rear and brought her hooves down, hoping to crush the snake before it could slither out of her grasp.

The snake sees your hooves at the last second and darts away, hissing with anger at your great shadow. As its smooth skin parts the grass and it disappears into the surroundings, it becomes clear it will not become your prey. It will live to see another day, much to your bad luck.

Romani cursed inwardly in frustration as she landed from her small rear. The snake had gotten away, slithering to safety somewhere further in the woods, and the palomino was left empty handed… Or, hooved, rather. Letting out a somewhat frustrated sigh, she left the rocks to continue on her way, but refrained from venturing too far from the tiger cub she had left behind at the willow tree. What else could the cub eat?

There were many things that she could eat, but it depended on if Romani had the ability to catch it. As an herbivore, she had never had a reason to hunt or kill things for food, not when grass and other vegetation was in plentiful supply… It was then that Romani’s azure eyes caught sight of a mouse skittering through the grass, searching for food of its own. Its whiskers twitch as it moves through the vegetation, its nose poised in the air to take in the scents around the Grove… It would be a long shot to kill such prey, but Romani would try.

Inhaling deeply to calm herself from her previous failure, the Haflinger approached the mouse, stepping lightly until she was close enough to make her move, yet not close enough to startle the creature. Collecting her weight in her powerful hind legs, Romani pushed off of the ground, making an arch in the air as she jumped towards the mouse, front hooves outstretched to attempt to crush it. Maybe this time, she prayed, luck would be on her side.

The mouse has no idea that you are coming. It is too focused on the vegetation and the other sights and sounds of the grove to even notice your shadow as it falls over its tiny, unsuspecting form. There is a shriek and then the small sound of bones crushing into powder beneath the weight of your powerful hooves. It is small, but so is the cub- you have made your first kill.

Never once had Romani ever thought that she would be delighted to kill an innocent creature… Yet the cub needed food, and she was the only one around who could provide it. Feeling the mouse’s bones crush beneath her greater weight, a feeling of relief swelled within the compact mare and she lifted a hoof, grimacing at the sight that lay beneath. Her relief turned to disgust and she shook her head.

“Disgusting… Well, I hope this will work until I can find something else.” Delicately, and clearly not wanting to move the dead rodent, Romani lowered her head and grasped the mouse’s tail in her teeth, turning on her haunches to return to the tiger. Underneath the willow tree the cub still sat, desperate cries for food leaving its little throat, and slowly Romani set the mouse’s lifeless body before the cub, which immediately quieted down. Intrigued, the cub sniffed at the mouse before beginning to eat, albeit slowly. It was clear that she was still supposed to be on her mother’s nutritious milk, but there was no way that Romani could provide that.

Watching the cub eat, however, the warrior’s chest puffed out in pride. She had done this, had given the helpless creature food when it needed to eat. Perhaps this wouldn’t be as hard as she had originally thought… Lost in her thoughts, Romani’s azure gaze was immediately drawn by the sight of a raven landing a few paces away, nearby where she had killed the mouse. Perhaps the blood had drawn the scavenger in for a feast? Glancing once more to the cub, who was quite happily eating her meal, the Haflinger turned to focus her attention on the raven. It seemed distracted, pecking at the ground in search for a meal. Perhaps she could trample the avian, much like she had done with the mouse? It would be difficult, however; one wrong move and it’s silky black wings could take the raven far into the air and from her grasp.

Picking her way carefully through the brush, Romani abruptly pushed into a canter, hoping to take the bird by surprise. Hopefully she could crowd the bird enough with her massive size that it wouldn’t be able to gain flight, and perhaps run it over.

Perhaps the old dog should learn some new tricks. The bird is capable of flight, and perhaps after hearing the shriek of the mouse, has grown more alert. As soon as your first hoof hits the ground in a cantering thud it takes wing, disappearing in a flash of black feathers. It caws, far off, thankful for its life.

Romani

It didn’t work. The bird was well aware of the threat that she posed and in the first chance it got, it flew high into the air with a mad flap of wings. Azure eyes watched as the raven flew higher and higher until disappearing into the surrounding trees, and as much as she wanted to feel frustrated that she had failed to catch yet another meal for her cub, the warrior truly wasn’t surprised. Letting out a small huff of breath, Romani turned her head to continue surveying her surroundings. Romani knew she would have to change tactics to feed the tiger… Charging in and throwing her weight around wouldn’t work all the time.

It was then that an idea came to her; why not try and use what the land around her has offered? There would be creatures living in the woods, yes, but what about those that resided in the liquid depths of the Grove itself? Turning, the mare ventured on towards the water and stopped at the shore, eyes scanning the water to try and spot some form of movement. Perhaps she could catch a fish… Could horses even catch fish? It would be a challenge, but Romani wasn’t defeated yet. With a mouth to feed, she wouldn’t give up.

Slowly the Foothills warrior stepped into the somewhat chilly water, stopping only when the surface of the water brushed by and caressed her knees. It was there that she resigned herself to wait, head held low as she stared into the depths of the water, body held completely still as not to spook any oncoming fish. For minutes the mare stood and waited, like a statue embraced by liquid, and when a small school of fish suddenly swam leisurely into her space, Romani bolted into action. Sweeping her thick forelegs in a wide arc, Romani hoped to force one, or more, of the fish to land on the dry shore so she could make her next kill.

[OOC: Question – As a warrior, could Romani use her rank ability (War Stomp) to aid in hunting? Or is use of the ability strictly for battles?]

The fish, shocked and confused, is quickly swept up in the deft arc of your legs. But you need not strike down upon it again- in its path of flight, one bump against your solid hooves was enough to end its uneventful life. If its fellows had any sort of intelligence, they would mourn him; you would become a villain to fish kind.

Luckily for you, they have no clue what just happened, and thus continue to swim on their merry way.

Romani’s gaze remained locked upon the fish as it flew from the safety of the water towards the shore, anticipating its small form to writhe and flop upon landing, desperately trying to return to its brethren… However, it merely lay still, and the palomino mare noticed immediately that it was dead. Once more a feeling of guilt blossomed in her breast, but this was something that had to be done. Trudging through the push and pull of the water, Romani shook the excess water from her feathery legs once back on dry land before lowering her head, gingerly grasping the fish by the tail with her teeth.

Despite trying not to, the taste invaded her senses, somewhat musky and disgusting… Straightening, she moved back to the cub, who was still waiting to be fed. Laying the fish down by the tiger, she smiled down at the white and black creature.

“Here you are… I’ll see what else I can find for you.” Leaving the tiger once more, Romani continued her vigil. It didn’t take long for her to come across her next potential kill. A squirrel was clearly roosting, collecting nuts and seeds. It was crouched down in the grass, tail raised, hopefully oblivious to the approaching mare.

Romani’s ears swiveled back, head lowering as she tried to plan just how to go about this. With the fish, the element of surprise had been on her side, but just like her failed attempt with the raven, one wrong move and the squirrel could get away. Azure eyes watched the little brown creature move, and an idea suddenly sprung in her mind. Perhaps she could trick it? Gaze dropping to her feet, Romani picked up a stick in her teeth and tossed it to the side, hoping it would prove to be a distraction. The stick landed in the brush some ways away, causing the grass to sway and a bush’s leaves to tremble due to the harsh disturbance, but Romani paid it no mind. Heaving herself forward, the mare charged, hoping to take the squirrel by surprise.

Your plan works perfectly. Perhaps it is due to the small size of their heads, and the fact that no large brain could logically fit within them, or perhaps you really are that clever. There are no other scientist squirrels on hand to explain the probability of it all, but you can consider yourself lucky no matter what. The squirrel perks up at the sound of the stick's rustling and turns to run- right into your hooves. There is a crack of bone and a smattering of blood, and then the kill is made.

Romani

Disgusting…

There was something about squishing a smaller life form beneath her hoof that Romani just simply couldn’t agree with. Taking lives was something that Romani also couldn’t agree with in general, but she knew that this was something that she had to do. If she didn’t hunt, and ultimately kill, for the young cub, then the said cub would starve and die. It was a vicious cycle, yes, but it had to be done… Shifting slightly and lifting up her hoof, the mare lowered her head and snorted. The blood and gristle was ghastly and unpleasant to look at, and smell, but just like all the other times she had made a kill prior, Romani lowered her head and grasped the small creature in her teeth, before turning and heading once more back to the tiger.

Ignoring the copper flavor of blood that coated her tongue, Romani set the unfortunate squirrel down before the cub, who was just finishing up devouring the fish that she had previously brought. Tiny bones scattered around the cub’s feet, and despite the moral issues of what she had just done, the red mare chuckled, affection blossoming in her chest. “Eat your fill, sweet thing. I don’t want you going hungry.” The cub looked up at her with quizzical eyes before letting out another chirping cry, then turned her attention to the squirrel. Romani lingered a moment or two longer before leaving the tiger once more, searching for something else to kill.

Not to far away a different kind of chirping caught her attention, and the Haflinger paused mid-step, listening for the sound to come again. It sounded like birds, but… Where were they? Turning her head to and fro, Romani searched for the sounds origins, and then looked up in the branches of a nearby tree. There, a small nest was nearly hidden in the lush branches of a fir tree, and Romani hesitated. Three tiny little hatchlings were in the nest, chirping for their mother, who was nowhere around. They were just babes themselves… Gritting her teeth to bear through what she was about to do, she stepped forwards towards the tree and paused, azure eyes sizing up the tree. It was of decent size, that was sure, but hopefully it couldn’t withstand her mere bulk and size.

Ever so slowly Romani collected her weight and pushed herself up onto her back haunches, front hooves stretching out to scrape at the bark of the tree. Then, on a sharp inhale, she pulled her hooves back to drive her full weight into trunk of the tree, hoping to rattle it enough that the nest would come tumbling down. While she didn’t even know if tigers even ate birds, hopefully her cub would if she were hungry enough.

Wicked an act as it is, it succeeds. The nest is shaken swiftly from its place and topples over, falling quickly to the ground and taking the hatchlings with eat. Each of them are small, hardly more than a bite for the ravenous tiger cub, but they will do. Still, their dying shriek is haunting. Taking new life to feed another is a morally ambiguous subject- you are only lucky that the mother is not around.

Romani

Another victory. Romani let out a cackle of joy, then abruptly cut herself off when she realized just what she had done. “Oh, Gods…” Stepping over to where the nest had fallen, the red mare lowered her head and sniffed the unfortunate chicks, letting out a soft exhale. Her blue eyes were full of guilt and sadness, and she spoke softly. “I’m sorry, little ones, that it had to be this way…” Clearing her mind so that she wouldn’t dwell on the loss of lives, Romani spent the next few minutes transporting the three little carcasses over to where her cub was waiting, going back and forth until she had returned with the last one.

Satisfied, she watched her little cub continue eating, somewhat surprised by how hungry something so small could be. Her cub didn’t even look at her, so focused as she was with eating, but that was alright… Something compelled the mare to continue hunting, and so that was what she planned to do. Turning away from the white and black striped bundle of fur, Romani began her search once more. What could she try and kill, now?

Pacing herself at a calm trot, Romani ventures onward, eyes darting to and fro as she rounds bushes and trees, searching for some kind of animal to be her next kill. Something as quick as a rabbit would be hard for her to kill, so even if the Haflinger saw one, she wouldn’t attempt to go after it. Minutes into her search, azure eyes spot her next potential victim; a least weasel has just finished a hunt of its own, finishing its meal of a small snake, and sat innocently in the grass. Knowing that its den was probably not too far away, Romani knew she’d have to make this attack count. Hunkering down in the grass as low as she could manage, the warrior waited for the right moment before springing forward, front hooves outstretched to possibly crush the small animal.

The weasel has no idea that you are coming, and just as it licks its lips, pleased with the taste of its own kill, your hooves make purchase. It hisses at the attack and turns to retaliate, but it is weak and you are sturdy. The arc of your hooves completes itself and the weasel is crushed beneath them.

Congratulations! You have now hunted enough food to provide for the cub, and it has bonded to be Romani's companion. The cub is now yours to play. Note that until Birdsong is over, the cub will not be able to connect with Romani's emotions and vice versa. Please post in Spring Cleaning with information about the companion to have it added to the records.
