        KOU
sometimes the wrong choices bring us to the right places

Was it possible that birth became easier after the first time one had gone through it? It was quite possible, Kou mused as she lay nestled near the Basin's hot springs. The steam from the water washed over her, warming her as her body did what came natural in the throws of labor. Then the timing was right she would clench her teeth together and push with all her strength. The pain of childbirth had faded, somewhat, from her memory but now it was back in full force and had her wondering why she would put her body through such torment once more.

She was reminded of why when she felt the foal slide from her body and onto the cold ground behind her. The nurse took a few moments to gather her wits about her and regain some of her strength before rising to her feet and turning to greet her newborn. A smile played at the pale mare's lips as she gazed down lovingly at her new child.

"Nao." She murmured as her head lowered and her muzzle brushed across the foal's forehead where she would one day wear the crown that would identify her as a unicorn. "I would let your father name you, but he might try to name you something ridiculous, so I'll save us the trouble, darling."

There had been something different about her mother now as she reached the last days of her pregnancy. She was often secluded and would only stay in the warmest areas of the herd lands. Aviya scoffed at the thought--she was born out in the open and in the cold, and she was strong. Something inside her turned darkly and she felt pity for her younger, unborn sibling. I cannot let it be weak. Aviya thought as she moved herself towards the hot springs, tail lifted in an Arabian fashion and her head lifted with all the pride of a princess.

"Mother," Aviya spoke lightly, her voice low and musing. Her crystalline eyes examined the new foal that lay on the ground beside her mother. As she stepped with agile cloven hooves closer to Momma Kou, the dark daughter wondered how long it would take her new sibling to stand up. Aviya watched the creature in an odd manner--close to the way Mesec had watched her. Aviya did not feel love for the wet foal like she did towards her parents, but an indifference towards it, along with Mesec. With a smirk she thought, at least it doesn't have wings. As Aviya reached the pale nurse's side she lowered her beautiful head down and touched muzzles with her, breathing lightly into Momma Kou's nostrils affectionately. "Why Nao?" Aviya asked simply, ears flicking to catch the soft vocals of her mother. With furrowed brows the dark princess lifted her head and looked down at her new sister.

The tail the swung darkly behind the yearling stopped moving as she turned her jaw to where she had come, eyes awaiting her father expectantly. She wondered how Daddy d'Art would feel about his new spawn, how he would raise her. Would he treat her with the same affection as he did her? Would he teach her the same things? Would he teach her how to kill, just as Aviya was learning?

Cold. Bright.

Everything was very cold and bright compared to that warm, dark place within her mothers womb. From the moment she left the crushing embrace of the birth canal and landed upon the hard, cold ground her existence became battered with senses.

Touch, cold and firm beneath her body, warmer where the muzzle of some giant being touched her forehead. Sight, blinded at first but gradually fading from nothing but light until shapes could be see, strange formations wherever she looked; rocks, trees, towering mountains in the distance beneath a very big, very very endless sky that flickered and waved. And a being not unlike her but much much bigger that smiled down at her. The creature was bright too, but not like the waving light-up-above. It was a kind of brightness that appeared both glowing and very real, in a radiant and welcoming way.

Maybe it was the voice that made her feel that way. It was soft and quiet, mumbling close to the small ears. Calling her, naming her. Nao. Was that her? Eyes looked up at the one who had delivered her into the world, one orb a pale blue while the other held a warm hazel brown tone; suddenly overwhelmed, because now there were not only one bigger thing but two. One bright that was home and warm and called her Nao, and another that was dark like the place within and gave off a feeling quite similar to the ground. Firm, cool, unyielding.

A small confused neigh escaped the small filly, and as if encouraged by the sound of her own voice she began to stir. The small whip-like tail slithered and thrashed over the ground as she began to wriggle back and forth, intent on forcing the long clove-footed pistons to obey.

It took some effort. She fell back to the earth once, twice, and as she grew frustrated with herself the attempts became increasingly frantic, all the more futile. Panting after the fourth flop back she was forced to rest, looking none too content with ears slicked back over the damp neck and tail slipping behind the rump like a cat stroked backwards.

The next attempt differed greatly from the rest. With a determined expression that wrinkled the tiny dark nose the girl slowly took command over one leg at a time, lifting them into position and placing them down as carefully as if they were made of glass. With a terrifying patience she didn't stop until she was perfectly content with the legs; and then she heaved herself up, every tiny muscle freezing as the weight was placed unto her cloven feet...

Standing. It wasn't so hard, now was it? With a sudden confidence clearly not based on reality the filly stuttered over to the pale side of her mother, searched her way across the warm hide and ducked in beneath her belly; the tail expressed contentment as she began to nurse, allowing warm, rich and life-giving milk to flow down into her belly.

d'Artagnan

"Wisely spoken" the blood bay laughed at Kou's comment on the shade's skills in naming. Or lack of for that matter. d'Artagnan had been lucky enough to be close to Kou's location when he heard the familiar grunts of a mare giving birth. He emerged now and made his way around the spring to greet his new born Nao and growing daughter Aviya. It was a proud moment for the Nightshade, their legacy secured in the small hooves of his daughters and son, Mesec. The latter he hadn't seen for sometime. Dual eyes first laid on Aviya, she had grown with the horn that had poked him in the chest months ago was now longer and sharper. d'Artagnan sincerely hoped she didn't plan on poking him in the chest again, he might have more of a problem this time. A grey nose dipped down and he gently nipped her frosted black mane, a fond glint in his eyes. "So full of questions, my Aviya" it was almost a habit that had come over him, to place 'my' in front of those he held dear. It was rare however, as d'Artagnan only regarded his family as precious.

Next his attention turned to his new born and Kou. Gaze brimming with curiosity as he quickly noted the filly possessed remarkably more patience than himself. Even at this young stage. Finally up right, the little Nao did the most natural thing and sought her mother for food. d'Artagnan greeted Kou with a warm press of his nose to hers, eyes still on his buckskin child. She had a tail like none of her parents and a wild colouring about her that echoed both Kou and d'Artagnan yet held her own personal flare. The tell tale glass horns that marked her as a child of the Nightshade were tiny on her forehead, it seemed two were present in intriguing close proximity to each other. Her growth would be interesting indeed. He wondered for a moment, what she would grow up to be like. Would she become like Aviya? Attentive to learn with a personality so sadistic that even d'Artagnan was highly impressed. Or would she be more gentle with a fine mind, like his Nurse?

The shade dropped his head down to the filly then, lightly touching the fur upon her back, a greeting from her father. "Nao." Was all he said, his brusque voice riddled with wonder and affection. A great many things he wanted to say yet he didn't want to burden a mind so young, this was the first birth he had been present for. A bitter taste was left in his mouth as he remembered his time in the Throat, the reason he was taken away from his beloved Aviya's birthing. d'Artagnan shook the memory from his mind and concentrated on enjoying the moment, attention turning back to Kou and he let his time healing magic filter into the mare. Erasing all fatigue she may feel, so she may enjoy the moment without feeling tired. "I think I am destined to be surrounded by females" he commented with a low, comical voice.

        KOU
sometimes the wrong choices bring us to the right places

"For the same reason I named you Aviya, darling." Kou said as she turned her head to her eldest daughter. She extended her muzzle and nuzzled Aviya's ears. "Because it was a name fitting a beautiful and potentially very deadly girl." She smiled. "And because I don't trust your father to name anything." She could imagine him naming their children after body parts. There was no way she would have a child named Hoof.

Her attention returned to Nao when the newborn began her mission of rising to her hooves. The patience she showed made Kou smile. Obviously that was something the foal had gotten from her. d'Artagnan had no patience that she'd ever taken note of.

Belatedly she heard d'Artagnan's voice and her smile grew. "Perhaps one day I'll provide you with a son, love." She jested. "For now you can be just as satisfied with a family of beautiful women, yes?" She shifted as she felt Nao's head under her belly as the filly had her first meal. "And you know what they say, practice makes perfect." The pale mare said with a wink.

Aviya stood watching her sister with a cool face, trying to figure her out. The small, delicate muzzle found its way under their mother's belly and it greedily took its fill. It had taken Aviya several tries to stand up straight--but, then again, she was not born surrounded by the warmths of the springs. She knew that if her small sister ventured outside of the safety of the vapors she would freeze to death. As much as it seemed Aviya's crystalline eyes harbored distaste for the younger filly, she would protect her just as any sibling should. Speaking of siblings, should not Mesec be with them? Blinking, she looked back to where she came from, wondering where her ugly, winged brother was.

Coming back to reality, Aviya stepped closer to her father and pressed her shoulder into his leg. "Father, you have Mesec. He is a colt, right?" Aviya asked, almost sarcastically. d'Artagnan was just as racist as the rest of them, and whether it took his DNA alongside the Moon Goddess' to make the demi-god son, he still had wings. Blinking, Aviya turned to her mother. "Yes, she is deadly alright. Watch out for those teeth, remember?" Aviya's ears lowered a bit and she offered her mother a warm smile, the sadistic filly always showing love and kindness towards the white mare that carried her and kept her safe so bravely. She remembered there being so many times that her stomach growled ferociously when they lived in the Steppe, before the God of the Spark graced the herd with a homeland, and how often Kou was just as hungry as she was.

Her head snapped up, however, and her face contorted in a slight show of disgust when her mother made the overly suggestive comment towards her father. Her white face cringed and she lifted one hoof gently, leaning back on her hinds to get away from her parents' business.
