Swift legs. Clicking hooves. Rustling of leaves and roots. Gentle twists and turns. Sounds reaching her ears and causing her to shudder. Muscles trembling and aching as she inched forward with fear in her system. There were too many threatening noises. Too many things that were making her go crazy. A shift in direction, a leap forward. An attempt to flee from the noises. So overwhelming. In fact, she didn't even know how long she'd been running for. But it had been too long and her stamina was depleting. Though, she didn't want to stop. The wolves can't catch me. They'll kill me... Except for the little fact that there were no wolves... No lupine or predatory creatures to attack her. At least, not that close to her. Not that she could sense.

So why was she freaking out? Why did she have to run. It was simply because of the memories that plagued her mind. The memories that didn't want to leave. The memories that hated her. The memories that tried to hurt her. The memories that had her scared and ruined. The memories that had caused her to be so etched into her old character. The character that couldn't will herself to stand still for very long. So a swift kick up and she bolted until she had run down almost into the water. Dropping her haunches and coming to a sliding stop she pulled her legs up until she was protected against tumbling into the water. Ragged breathing looking at the clear liquid as she watched her one ear move. Watching her sides heave in and out. Watching her hair as the last centimeters of her curling tendrils brushed against the top of the water in an intricate dance that no one could ever mimic. A soft sigh caused the water to ripple away before she raised her maw and peered around at the trees leering over the water as the sun reflected over them causing curling designs to appear on them. So interesting, so delicate. So... not scary. She inched closer to them, touching the design before shaking her head at her silliness. Then, she returned to the edge of the water, sucking in the cooling liquid and taking care of her parched throat and relaxing her now aching muscles from the long run she had just gone on. A long run for the most stupid reasons. But, now, she was too exhausted to really care...

Wandering souls never stayed in one place for long. They were driven to follow the wind in its finicky patterns, to chase after half composed dreams and even worse half-truths. Rowan was a wanderer by nature, having grown from the awkward stage of foalhood in a rugged desert where she had been an outcast with her mother. Never staying long in bands, always moving on. Hoping for a better future. Her mother had abandoned her, disappearing like a ghost into the distance. So Rowan had been raised by a far older mare that manipulated and forced her into a mold she could hardly fit. Even so the need to leave her precious homeland at times was a bit too strong. She was not one to run after half started dreams, but she sought knowledge. Her mind was a well oiled machine that required new information to keep it both satisfied and running. It was not easy for her, so she had become a Scholar beneath the wonderful Cassiopeia. And that was how she had found herself, the real Rowan behind the facade of herself that her adoptive mother had created.

On this day she wandered north, through dark territory she rarely explored. The Grey lived here, she had heard. It was all very hush hush, but if you needed business with them they were never far away. Limbs creaked and groaned overhead, leaves rustling in the gentle wind of Birdsong. It was like the forest was alive, watching her every move. Waiting for her to give her blood to the ground where so many others had spilt it. It would not happen on this day, but she was not sad to disappoint them. Heaving breaths met her ears long before the scent of a femme did, and cocoa ears pricked forward in curiosity. Quietly she stepped towards the sound, picking her way foreword with dark hooves that blended well with the undergrowth. Blonde curled locks fell over her shoulders and framed dark oceanic eyes that peered through the shadows the trees provided. A mare she did not know was standing before a pool of water, clearly tired from something. Rowan instinctively began to process why, brain whirring to life. Sweat was flecked around her neck and flanks, breaths coming heavily, and she was clearly parched if she was drinking with such relish. Wind tousled mane, incredibly long, told her in the long run that the mare had done just that; gone on a long run. Why and from where Rowan was clueless. Whickering softly she stepped forward from the treeline. Letting herself be seen, hesitating there for a few moments before stepping carefully closer. Picking her way, contemplating every step and deducing which place would be best suited for her hoof. Rowan did not move too close, giving the woman her room. Curious, kind sapphire eyes looked to the beautiful chocolate mare. Calm, all-knowing aura radiating out from her. "Hello. I am Rowan. Are you well on this beautiful day?" Asking in her soft voice, never one to have a particularly loud or brash tone. It was simply how she was.

[[That sucked I am sorry lol]]

A swift swish of her tail. And a gentle dropping of her head. Her eyes falling closed for a few minutes. It was all too much to take in. She was so exhausted. Though, she was glad that she was finally worn out. Perhaps that would mean that she would not jump at every single thing that moved. She’d be too tired to. Though, that was probably a lie. As huge of a lie as she could get it to become. Concentrating on the water she watched the ripples pull out and create even more circles that would disappear around the edges. Don’t concentrate upon the world. Don’t concentrate upon anything at all. In fact. Pretend you don’t exist. That sounds even better. Then you cannot dwell on the memories. The memories that haunt you.

She spun around the second she heard hooves, her eyes landing upon the mare that was now before her. ”Hello. I am Rowan. Are you well on this beautiful day?” a soft voice emerged from the mare and pelted her ears. A tiny snort escaped Resplendence’s maw as she collected herself. Nothing to hurt her. There was nothing to hurt her. A tiny shudder of her muscles before she glanced back toward the mare, now able to hold what little amount of eye contact she could before dropping her gaze again. ”Fairly well, yes. I am Resplendence. Pleasure to meet you, ma’am. You doing well yourself?” She responded, gently shuffling back a little bit and flicking her forelock so the curling tresses were no longer hindering her vision. Calm down. Stop being stupid.

Leaves brushed softly against her sides and flanks where she stood half encased by the trees. Peering out at the copper lady that stood drinking and huffing softly, observing her with calm curiosity. The femme's eyes darted around, as if fearing something that Rowan could not see nor hear. But they all had their secrets, she supposed. The moment her words touched the other female's ears she spun around as if bitten, and Rowan blinked at her innocently, surprised by her reaction. It seemed to take her a few moments to...collect herself? Form her words? Rowan couldn't help all the questions, she needed to know everything. Her mind would turn on itself in a second and destroy her if she didn't keep it working, moving. It was the downside to brilliance, that and having very little ties to emotions. However even Rowan felt a brief flash of concern for the woman when her muscles briefly seized before relaxing. Their eyes met, but only for a brief second.

Rowan took one step forward, only one. Somehow she felt that this mare was like a wild animal, injured and skittish. Not that she minded of course, Rowan was very level headed and would hopefully not shock or surprise her with her movements. Listeners flicked high and chocolate crown tilted curiously. "It is a beautiful name, Resplendence. 'Brilliant, radiant beauty. The glory of the sunrise.' Correct?" Blushing and turning her head away sheepishly when she realized she'd done it again, flipping to a page in her memory and spewing it out. Hoping Resplendence wouldn't make fun of her for it. "S-Sorry. Yes, I am doing well. Merely...getting away from thoughts, I suppose." Smiling shyly at the other mare, hopefully. Rowan had so few friends, had truly only one. Sohalia. She always hoped that others could look past her mind and accept her for who she was beneath it. Sadly, many people found her quoting, equations, questions, and patterns annoying. Sohalia understood her though, and for that she was thankful. At least she had someone. Oceanic irises turned shyly to Resplendence, blonde tail swishing rhythmically against her legs. Counting the number of times it hit her skin and the time it took for her to remove it and repeat the action. Counting, thinking, controlling the machine that was a gift and a curse.

Her eyes flickered back and forth. Back and forth. Back and forth. A long breath escaped her maw as she attempted to keep herself calm. But who was she kidding? She couldn't be calm! She was incapable of being calm. All she wanted to do was to run. Run away from this other equine. It took all of her willpower to stand there. To be civil. To not try and bolt away. Bolting was bad manners. And she knew better than that. She had been taught better than that. Ciro wouldn't have been too happy had she just run away, especially with no threat. There was no reason to run. So she must stay. So she must be civil. She must learn to interact with the world again - as she had started to with Ciro. So she wouldn't shame him.

And she stood there. Well, stood there minus the flinch, as the mare took a step toward her. It was another mare. A mare very close to her height. There was no reason to panic. None. She wasn't going to harm her. Just calm down. The other mare tilted her crown curiously. "It is a beautiful name, Resplendence. 'Brilliant, radiant beauty. The glory of the sunrise,' Correct?" she spoke before turning her head away sheepishly. Res tilted her head quietly in confusion. "N-never knew that. So I guess..." she murmured as the mare spoke back up, "S-sorry. Yes, I am doing well. Merely... getting away from thoughts, I suppose." a shy smile etching itself upon the chocolate face of the mare. Breathe. In. Out. In. Out. In. Out. In. Out. Falling into a simple rhythm to keep herself calm she watched the swishing of the other mare's tail. Calm. Become collected. Don't panic. It was that simple, wasn't it? A gentle breath in and then she watched as the mare looked back up to her. "It's fine... no need to apologize," Manners. Remember manners. "Getting away from thoughts can be a good thing," she whispered.

She is skittish, like Rowan. It’s almost comforting, but they are on far different levels. And, it seems, for far different reasons. Rowan is shy and unwilling to become involved in conversation because she is awkward, nervous around others because she has long been ridiculed for the brilliance of her photographic mind. However it seemed that Resplendence was not wary for the same reasons. In fact she seems to be on a rather extreme level of it, and Rowan relaxes her face into a soft look of understanding. It has been a long, long time since she has encountered another like her, someone who fears social interaction. But no, Resplendence fears far more than that. Rowan is analytical, discovering small things in every twitch of her muscles. She twitches at every sound, eyes darting around. No, Resplendence fears far more than Rowan could ever bring forth, but the chocolate mare is oblivious to what could have caused it. Was it an event? Was it something she was born with, like Rowan and her memory? Was it trauma? An act? So many answers to a single question that, in Helovia, defines everyone. Helovia is a strange place to be with even stranger inhabitants. Even so Rowan isn’t unnerved or driven away by the quiet, anxious nature of the mare. She merely continues to flick her tail in a comfortable, recorded rhythm. It soothes her, at least, counting the beats and breaths, the sensations and timings. Maybe it will soothe Resplendence as well, for the mind is often comforted by simple motions it does not even recognize are happening.

”N-Never knew that. So I guess…” Rowan sighs softly, used to this response. It’s something she has acquainted herself with, the awkward fumbling, and the queer glances. Even so a shy smile stretched over the pretty face of the fae, and Rowan smiles back tremulously. It is a small victory for the both of them, but Rowan doesn’t move any closer nevertheless, remembering the recoil of muscles when she had done it the first time. It doesn’t bother her as much as others, for she isn’t necessarily a touchy person. In fact she shies away from it, having been alone most of her childhood and adolescent life. Not being close to Resplendence is more of a comfort to her than anything else. Touch is precious, and it is only shared with Sohalia, who is the only person to ever worm their way completely into Rowan’s heart. Similarly colored femme waves away her apology, but the whisper is not missed. ”Getting away from my thoughts…it’s nearly impossible…” she whispers mournfully, not realizing she was saying it out loud. Her mind was a gift and a curse, words that came directly from her mentor. ”We all have something to run from, don’t we?” Ocean blue eyes turning to Resplendence, honest but silently pleading for her not to feel invaded or bare. Rowan doesn’t know emotions very well, and there is a desperation to her tone and face that she struggles to hide. Always a struggle.

A soft sigh came from the other mare's mouth as Resplendence stumbled over her words - never having known what her name meant. A shy smile flickered over her face until it was mirrored in the other fae's face. Trembling she closed her eyes before opening them again, listening to the rhythmic swishing of the other mare's tail. A calmness slowly pooling over her frame as she watched her, pricking up her ear at the sound of the other fae's voice. "Getting away from my thoughts... it's nearly impossible..." a mournful whisper escaped her maw as the femme watched her movements. The poor one. At least she could shove the memories of her family's death from her mind. Shove them into deep dark abysses so that she didn't have to bother with the pain until she felt like she could handle it. "We all have something to run from, don't we?" she questioned, the blue eyes landing upon her golden ones. An honesty was in them that allowed the mare to keep herself calm.

A gentle bob of Resplendence's head as she allowed her trembling voice to emerge once more, "Yes, I do suppose we all have something to run from," she mused with a tiny snort. "It just tends to be worse for some rather than others," she added, finally feeling the muscles in her body relax. Frame ceasing it's trembling as she took in a short breath. Sensation overload had stopped. So she could breathe in peace now. Or, at least as much peace as she allowed herself to have. For, there was no doubt that something else would cause her to jump.

They are both shy; tremulous smiles appearing on quivering muzzles. Neither seems to know what in the world to do, and Rowan is oddly comforted by that fact. It seems something of her comforts Resplendence as well, for she relaxes in that tiny, edging way that does not escape the all-knowing pools of blue that watch her. Ticking through her list she slowly figures out that it is the calm, methodical swishing of her tail that keeps her grounded. Understanding, kind smile approached her lips in an unsure manner. Rowan wasn’t used to being friends with people; in fact she only had one. But…could she really reach out to someone who seemed just as skittish as herself? Taking hope and courage from the interest Resplendence displayed, Rowan swallowed shakily and tried to calm herself. Don’t run away, she encouraged herself softly. The same urge had overtaken her when she’d first encountered Sohalia. Hopefully if she didn’t run, like with her best friend, the end result would be the same? It was the only thing that kept her hooves planted firmly on the ground, the hope that they could become friends. Maybe they could swap their broken pieces and glue them into their own personal mirrors, keeping a shard of the other in their own messed up minds.

Bob of crown makes Rowan’s soft face crumple with relief, having been so anxious over the fact that Resplendence could have reacted terribly to such a simple question. Everything in her is vibrating, humming. Begging and persuading her to leave, for why would she make any progress in friendship? Self-degradation is her favorite pastime, after all. Why give up now? ”Quite correct. Sometimes I just wish I could run faster,” she admitted, trying to smile and make it a joke. Even so it is brutally, heart-breakingly honest. She wished she could run fast enough to get away from what was chasing her, but it didn’t always work. ”So, you are of the Foothills?” Voice trembles, feeling as if she is crossing a line. Always feeling as if she was crossing some sort of line. What was she supposed to know about social tendencies anyways? She hardly spoke to anyone than a devil of an old mare her entire life.

and i'll find strength in pain and i will change my ways
Breathe in. Breathe out. Breathe in. Breathe out. That was simple. Right? Just keep breathing. Keep concentrating on the scrap, flick and scrap of the tail as it flicked across the other mare's legs. Her muscles relaxing a little. The other mare also seemed as stressed as Res was. So, while that didn't necessarily help it also didn't hinder. For if there was a reason to run then both of them would run. A flick of her ear and a tilt of her head as the mare spoke before a gentle bob of the crown. The other mare's face crumbling with a sense of relief at the action. Her mind seemed to be running at a few miles a minute, taking over every single thing which had just ensued. Taking in the tiny movements Res allowed her head to tilt to the side as the mare spoke again, "Quite correct. Sometimes I just wish I could run faster," the mare allowed a smile as if she was trying to make it seem like a joke. Res nodded her head. "Thoughts never fade, same with memories," she murmured before the voice trembled again. "So, you are of the Foothills?"

She supposed she was of the Foothills, a tiny bob of her head in response, "Yes. I'd suppose one could say so... I just recently found them and was taken in. I'd been running for a while before then, though," she said, allowing her forelock to gently cover her eyes as she let out a soft breath. Tense frame no longer tense as she peered at the mare through her silken locks, "Where are you from?" she inquired politely.

It was awkward to stand there, the both of them clearly nervous, but Rowan was clearly the lesser of the two. Even so she was terrible with emotions and didn't know how to handle Resplendence at all. They were at a bit of a stalemate, simply standing there awkwardly while trying to make conversation that was forced at least a small bit on both sides. Nevertheless Resplendence answered her in a fashion far more sober than what Rowan had spoken in. Sighing softly she nodded and turned dark azure eyes to the sky, staring up into it vapidly. "That is true. Sometimes though, it is best for us to delude ourselves that they will fade someday."

Thankfully enough, Resplendence answered her question as to where she hailed from. "Then it is good that they found you, Resplendence. Running isn't always the best decision, though that is merely my own experience speaking," she admitted. Resplendence certainly looked like she needed the love and stability of a herd, at least. Though when she bounced the question right back, the wording made Rowan quirk her lips slightly, eyes still on the sky that filtered through the trees. "Where am I from seems like a question of where I hail from, which would be nowhere as I was stuck in a desolate wasteland, wandering, my entire childhood. However I am from the Dragon's Throat, one of the only wingless I'm afraid." It was a bit disheartening to be one of the only equines in the Throat, but she held love for her herd and didn't care that she had no wings.

[[God that sucked but I wanted to get this up finally since my Rowan muse went running off for an extended vacation. Sorry!!]]
