Romani

It was with a heavy heart that Romani stepped slowly through the soft grasses of the Foothills, the long blades of greenery stretching up to brush at her thick legs as she moved by, leaving a trail of swaying grass in her wake. The Haflinger’s eyes were glazed as she lost herself to her thoughts, head poised low, and mane cascading down her neck in ivory rivulets. Her once crisp, vibrant azure eyes were lost, confused, and anguished… She had left the Thistle Meadow shortly after Xanthos had fled, after declaring his love for her. He had loved her, the grullo Unicorn had stated, but in the end, Romani couldn’t have remembered him even if she sank her mind into the deepest recesses of her memory.

Watching Xanthos flee from her and seeing the turmoil shining in his slit, golden eyes, stung far deeper than if he had turned his horn on her and plunged the weapon into her chest himself.

At her haunches, Kasai trotted beside her, worry flowing through the internal bond that the two shared. The small tigress was growing more and more concerned for the palomino’s well-being, knowing that Romani was deeply troubled but unable to find a way to help. The mare had been silent, both vocally and internally, since they had departed the Thistle Meadow, and for the life of her, Kasai simply couldn’t cheer her bonded up. So, instead, she remained at the Haflinger’s side, sending her comforting love through their beloved bond, and hoping that it would be enough.

Stopping near the banks of the flowing river, Romani’s head lifted slightly, eyes lingering for a few moments upon the crystal clear water as it flowed its natural course. How many others would there be, besides Xanthos and Abdullah? How many more would claim to know her, only to be horrified that she couldn’t remember them? Or, better yet… Could Romani handle meeting another who she simply couldn’t remember, spotting the disappointment and confusion in their eyes when she told them that no, she couldn’t recall their names or their past friendships…?

With troubled thoughts and a heavy heart, Romani stood upon the banks of the crystal river, head lowered, losing herself to her thoughts. So focused as she was, she was oblivious to any others around her. Kasai, however, remained vigilant, taking a seat upon the grassy terrain next to the mare’s side, tail twitching and whiskers trembling slightly. The cub's blue eyes scanned the land of their home, ever watchful.

How long, indeed, would Romani be like this; a blank slate trying desperately to fill the pages?

The true Soldier fights not because
He hates what is in front of him,
But because he loves what is behind him.

Nayati
the flower that smells the sweetest is shy and lowly

Where had her beloved Roma and Abby gone?

It seemed she had simply been abandoned, everyone she loved disappearing into thin air. No matter where she looked or how hard they were simply absent, not there. Bale was her only comfort, though Insanity had become a type of mentor to her. Nayati was working towards becoming a creature of light, but it was a difficult path away from the darkness she’d been born into. The mare was broken and cold, where Nayati was only halfway cracked and rather warm. They were opposites, coming together to try and save the new generation. Nayati may be the new generation, but she wanted to be able to lead them when her youth was fading and she was left to guide them forward into an honest living. Nayati was no fighter, was not built for it in any way physically, but she had a stubborn mind and soul. That was all she needed to be considered a fighter in her eyes, for merely by living she was fighting fate. Maybe she would never raise hoof or flare teeth towards a foe, but that was irrelevant to her. There were far more important things, and she would leave the protection of her home to those who knew best how to defend it.

Wandering was something she participated thoroughly in these days. Why, she could only guess. Thinking to herself that it was a mixture of boredom, a wish to see nature, and a hope that she would find one of her missing loved ones. She had changed in the near season they had been gone, though it was a good change. But…an entire season? Why had they abandoned her, just as Svetlana had in her death? The word no longer made her insides ache, but heart thumped painfully at the memory of the woman who had become like a mother to her. Sometimes she caught herself musing that she was not meant to have real parents, that she would walk through life and grow from childhood to adulthood without a proper parental figure. Those thoughts were shaken away as easily as pesky flies in summer, for she would not disappoint Insanity. This was something she had to do.

Flash of sorrel red embraced her and for a moment ruby eyes widened and remained stuck on one figure. Tiny form stopped dead, snowy hooves digging sharply into the ground to stop the motion of her bodice. Was it true? Were her eyes deceiving her? Blinking hard she realized that no, this was not another phantom conjured by her desperate mind. It really was Romani. Though the cat that was accompanying her was completely unknown to Nayati. Frail girl stepped from the trees, dark rose eyes staring up in shock at Romani for a few seconds longer before happy tears sprung to her eyes and she ran towards the mare that had taken her in and comforted her, practically raised her since Svetlana had been stolen directly after her acceptance into the Foothills. Cheerful cry arose from her throat as she ran; irises alight with love and joy. Words were not required in the joyous song she let out, dancing before Romani and practically touching their chests together as she pushed up on her hind legs. Touch was needed in that moment, to cover the distance of time. “Roma! Roma! Where have you been?! I missed you, I missed you!” Voice came out exuberant but also breathless, though not physically. As if praising the gods with those repeated phrases, pure love resounding from within her tone. Bale and Insanity were slowly but surely making her inch from her shell, but even this was not characteristic to her. It was full blown joy and relief that made her act in such a fashion, happy tears streaking her delicate face. Completely ignoring the cat at her loved one’s side, blissfully forgetting all the time that had passed. It didn’t matter anymore, Romani was there with her at that moment. ”I love you, please don’t leave again…” whispering against her shoulder, hiccupping and sniffling a little despite being so very happy. At that moment, everything was perfect.
