Upon descending from the slopes of the Veins of the Gods, Kimber found herself in the wide expanse of Thistle Meadow. Her pace quickened from a quick, sure walk up into an easy canter, racing at a sustainable pace through the green grass and colorful wildflowers that carpeted the field. It felt good to stretch her legs, feel the wind whip her two-toned mane back, the satisfying thud of her hooves against the ground, the slither of her necklace over her chest and withers.

But soon enough she slowed as the sparkle of sunlight off of water forewarned her of slippery footing ahead. Settling into a walk, she paced alongside the river that split the Meadow in twain, watching the surface glinting in the sunlight as the water flowed steadily past her on its way to the sea. At the water's edge the form of her fox had gained more substance, altering from a wispy make up to one of pure water, sparkling in its own right as it trotted across the top of the shallows.

A small smile crossed the young grulla's features as she watched the fox, thinking on the Earth God's task. She was to explore the water, explore the creatures that depended upon the water. It was... an interesting concept, and one she meant to give her all to. So she turned her attention from the fox to the river itself, thinking.

The water here is fresh, so it is drinkable. The snow in the mountains above the Foothills has melted, so the water is cold. Uh... fish live in the water. They eat... littler fishes and bugs. Oh! And frogs live in the water. Then there's the birds that eat the frogs and the fish. And and... bigger birds eat the birds that eat the fish. But what about the land-living animals? I bet just about every animal from miles around come here to drink. But there's so many...

"Oh bother." Kimber muttered as she came to realize the magnitude of the situation. Lashing her tail against her hocks she turned and waded into the river, breath coming out in a quick hiss at the bitter chill that came from snow melt. She only ventured out knee deep, loathe to venture out too far when the water was so cold. She bent her head to drink from the river water, taking small sips to avoid chilling her system overmuch after being up amongst the lava fields of the Veins. The dark ends of her mane and tail trailed in the water, drifting downstream as far as their lengths would allow. Blue eyes attentively gazed out across the water's surface, watching for animals from above and below the surface.

(( Looking for a river otter to fill her 'prey' slot in the same way the ferrets fill her smaller 'prey' slot, but preferably an otter of the giant variety. ^.^ ))

Across the riverbank, a giant otter slumbers upon the rocks. The sun washes over him in waves and soothes his troubled mind. Of his brothers in the river, he is the least loved by their mother. True, he is older now and perhaps should be getting along on his own, but how can one move on in the face of such teasing and torment? With his whiskers twitching in sad frustration, he lets out a sigh and stretches across the rocks. He would think that he needed a friend if that had ever aided him in the past. Now all he needs is to get away from his family and the other predators in the water. After all, crocodiles lurk in the shallows, his brothers tell him.

And what, he wonders, is so awful about the riverbank? As his coat dries and spikes out, as the sunlight casts a sheen over his oily coat, he makes up his mind. He will not go into the water, maybe never again. Not with his family chittering at him every minute and the threat of death ever lurking. He rolls onto his back and looks up into the blue of the sky, blissful in his isolation. For now, anyway.

In the water before Kimber, the reflection of the Earth God appears. "So you've come, child. Look across the water, see the creature there- you must convince the otter to return to the water, by whatever means possible. Only then will your magic grow in power." And then, casting a ripple over his own features, the God of the Earth and the whisper of his watery voice disappeared.

Beneath her nose, the water... shifted. No longer did it reflect the sky, but instead showed an image of the Earth God's face. Startled, Kimber froze in mid swallow for a heartbeat, until she heard his voice whisper against her ears. Her blue eyes lifted from his visage to scan the bank across from where she stood as he instructed. There she spotted an otter, greater in size than the ones she'd seen frequent the stream and pool of the Foothills.

Slowly she swallowed, water warmed by her mouth rushing down her throat as she considered the new instructions she had been given by the Earth God. Convince the otter to return to the water? Wondering why the otter would want to stay out of the water, she looked down to ask this, only to watch the water ripple over the God's features and the surface resume reflecting the world around her.

Ah well. Her gaze flicked toward where she'd last noted her watery friend, and smiled to herself in satisfaction as the fox formed in the shallows at her thought of it. It danced across the surface to her, ripples spreading where its paws touched, water exchanging through each touch so that its appearance cleared of silt and insects as it grew closer, until it was completely translucent as it came to pause before her muzzle.

With a thought, she sent it racing across the river, faster and more silently than she herself could have achieved. But not entirely unaccompanied, for she gave voice to a merry little whicker of greeting before the watery fox leapt from the water's surface and danced in a circle around the otter. Curious, Kimber waited to see how it would react to her two-pronged greeting, stepping deeper into the water so that it lapped gently against her chest and barrel.

From the north came a painted draft. His head hung low as he walked. So many thoughts ran through his head. It had been hard to leave World's Edge, and he needed a few moments.. Or well a little longer before he returned to the Windtossed Foothills. As the young warrior walked his head lifted up, confidant he had made the right choice. He had not abandoned the Qian, they were still very much apart of him. "I hope you find what you need on your journey. The Qian supports you." Mirage's word's echoed in his mind. The way she had left had said it all. She was hurt by his choice or so he thought. But did she not realize he did this to be able to protect them better?

It was only then the egg caught his brown eyes. It was white with strange garnet markings all across it. At once he looked around to see if a mother was near. The only thing he saw was a strange glow around the egg. Carefully he stepped forward and into the glow. The moment he did his entire body felt warm, much like it did when his magic was being used. He would worry about that later as gently he picked up the egg and carried it off with him.

As he entered the Thistle Meadow brown eyes lit up at the sight of Kimber. He did not stop to let her know he was there, as it would of required him to put the egg down. He did not stop until he was a slight bit off from her right side. Only then did he set the egg down to speak. "Hey there Kimber. What are you doing out here?" The last time he had seen her was right after his fight. His limp was better and the cuts were getting better as well. They did not sting near as bad at least..

He hears noises and stiffens instantly. The heavy hoofbeats that disturb his slumber are unfamiliar. He has lived in this meadow all his life and learned of the equines, even grown to recognize some of them. But these two are new, and he feels a sort of fear in their presence. The paint draft is massive, the type that could crush him with one blow, and the mare... he doesn't trust her. Perhaps it is the magic he can smell on her, but he knows something is not right. His whiskers twitch nervously and he rolls onto his stomach once more. His legs stiffen beneath him and he prepares to run- but... where to? The water stirs with a force like magic and the hair along his spine sticks out. No, the water is a dangerous, traitorous home. He cannot retreat there anymore.

The paint stallion begins to speak in his own language, neighing and bellowing in a ferocious manner. The otter steps back off of the rocks and shakes his head in fierce and scared confusion. Maybe the water would be safer. There at least the uttering of the massive beasts would be muffled.

But just as he makes up his mind to return to the river, magic from the mare stirs up from the water and changes his mind. A fox, a predator even despite its size, forms from the water and it suddenly holds a more dangerous hue. The mare seems to laugh at him from across the river, and as he backs away from the rocks, he realizes that the heat of the sun no longer shines on him. With each second the fox grows closer, following him even as he walks as if determined to capture him. Perhaps a braver young otter would be curious, but he feels only fear and a sense of territorial protection. His claws dig into the soft soil and his hackles lift along the back of his neck. The otter, old enough to be about four feet, braces himself for a fight. With a wild and untamed claw, he strikes out at the watery fox and hopes to scare it off.

[My apologies for the delay.]

Blue eyes were keenly focused on the otter across the river, attention rivetted upon the small task given her by the Earth God to the point where she was oblivious to the sounds of another's approach. A contributing factor perhaps was that it was familiar hoofbeats that approached, one she trusted so her subconscious didn't ring an alarm. But the sound of Aaron's voice was more than enough to startle her, have her spinning around in surprise.

At least, attempting to. So quickly did she move that Kimber's hooves lost traction on the soft river bottom. Barely did she have time to let out a soft cry of surprise before she went under with a splash. But only for a moment, for she came back up sputtering and laughing, dripping wet. "Aaron!" her voice was teasingly reprimanding as she turned her gaze toward him. "Don't sneak up on someone like that!" Mischief lit her eyes then, and she reared up, forehooves flashing out and sending double sprays of water flying in his direction. Now she giggled, dropping back down to all fours with another, smaller splash.

Distracted so, she was unaware of the small drama occurring across the water. Her watery fox peered questioningly at the frightened young otter, sitting back on its translucent haunches. It didn't even react to dodge away from the swatting strike delivered by the otter. Its paw merely passed through the fox, dampness clinging to its claws and a small spray of droplets, flung free of the fox's breast, splattered the ground. Then the fox rose, pacing in a wide circle around the otter until it had the otter between itself and the river, and stood still again, waiting.

Aaron watched as Kimber spun around at the sound of his voice. Clearly she had not heard him coming. He could only watch as she splashed into the river. He tensed, ready to jump in after her should she not come up right away. However with relief she did, teasingly scolding him for sneaking up on her. He of course had been at her eyes when he noticed the different glint in them. Not a moment later he found himself covered in the cool water of the river as Kimber splashed him not once but twice. Her front hooves had cause the first splash, but as she landed back in the water a second splash hit the young paint. His mane clung to his neck, forelock barely covering his eyes. Everything else was forgotten for the moment as Aaron decided to have some fun himself.

The same mischievous look that had lit up Kimber's eyes now lit his own as he leaned back for a moment on his hind legs. Sudden he sprang forward, aiming to land right next to Kimber in the river and splash her as well. Totally forgotten was the strange egg he had found. He would tell Kimber of it later, but for not it was time for both of them to have a bit of fun. For once Aaron was not the stone cold warrior or adult he had to be... He was just another two year old trying to have some fun. The drama on the other side of the river was unknown to him, even if he knew this was right where he wanted to be. The cool waters felt good against his healing wounds. There would be scars there permanently, but at least the damage had not been as bad as it could of been. But for now all of that was forgotten. He was here with one of his longest best friends, and nothing else mattered. At long last turned to her and spoke. "Didn't mean to scare you Kimber, just wasn't expecting to find out out here."

He realizes quickly that nothing will deter this wretched, magic beast. The young otter backs up, hissing as he goes, and does what he can to distance himself from the fox. There is nothing left for him to enter but the rushing water. But wouldn't that be an admittance of defeat? His small teeth chatter as he chirps at the fox in fear that he tries to hide behind bravery.

It is no use. With one quick look back at the waters of the river, he knows that as unkind as he may find his family, the water is his home. With a heavy sigh he turns and skitters forth, water splashing up against his legs in a splash of white. But still, he is not safe. The otter has no time to dodge the crashing hooves of the gypsy vanner, and so they strike him directly across the back. He feels death coming as the hooves near him and he realizes in a moment of horror that there is nothing he can do.

But when the strike comes, he feels nothing. One look at himself reveals that the hoof has instead passed right through him. Where solid fur once covered him, a watery sheen now glistens. In a brief transformation, he becomes like the fox: a part of the water. He feels a sort of slipping sensation, as if his mind is leaving his body, and then he feels nothing but lifelessness.

The empty, watery figure of an otter is visible in the water for mere moments before crashing down to join the current. As if to signify the completion of her first task, the current slows and the water warms ever so faintly.

[The first task is complete. Make a new thread and tag RE to start the next one.]

A wary, knowing look entered the young grulla eyes as she watched her friend. There was laughter there still, but she recognized it within him and anticipated some sort of reprecussion. She watched as he begun to mirror her rear, lacking the flicking legs and the splashed that had arisen from them.

Then she squealed in shock and delight as he lunged at her, water cascading up before him to pour over her head. Brief sputters gave way to peals of laughter as she shook her water-logged forlock out of her face, reaching out to nip playfully at her friend's shoulder. "I am here on a quest from the God of the Earth." She said matter-of-factly, turning to see how the fox's progress had gone.

It stood, silent and watching on the edge of the shore, gaze turned beneath the surface. Quizzically her gaze followed, catching a glimpse of the otter in its new, water-locked form before it dissipated into the river. A low snort escapes her as she felt the water slow and warm slightly. Flicking her tail, a shower of droplets flung from its tip as it shook loose of the river's grasp, she looked back at Aaron. "And its going swimmingly. I was tasked with convincing an otter to go into the water, and my fox helped me accomplish that while you were distracting me. But I still have one animal to go."
