what could you encounter, along the beach of crystal?

Soft, soothing waves crashed along the pale white granules of the shore, water lapping gently upon the dry land in a soft, soothing caress. It was almost a tender display, like the way a mother would caress her child’s cheek in an open display of affection. Day and night. Life and death. These were the certainties of life. Just as new lives were brought into the world, old or weary ones were taken away, to a far and distant place where they could start over… A morbid thought you may ask? Yes, but there isn’t anything spoken here but the truth.

From the waves comes a rather large tortoise, on this night of the full moon. She pulls herself along the crystal sand particles, her glistening form brilliantly displayed by the moon shining in all of its glory. There is a sense of excitement in the air, a spark of magic that any and all creatures could sense… But this tortoise, so exhausted and tired, continued to pull herself further and further away from the foamy kisses of the waves. Upon the beach, the she-turtle eventually came to a stop, the curved beak of her mouth taking on a rather thoughtful expression. Deep brown eyes studied the nearly reflective surface of the sand, and with one last glance in each direction to see if anyone was about, she began to dig.

Deeper and deeper the she-tortoise dug, until she was satisfied with the depth of the hole she had created. It was there, with only the beauty of the full-moon as witness and with the orchestra of the ocean, that she laid her nest. Upon the deed’s completion, the newly made mother began covering each little egg with a loving tenderness only known to the bond between mother and child. Her flippers moved slowly, tiredly, exhausted from her long and grueling journey across the seas to this very beach; the beach of Helovia. Home to many equines, the turtle noted… She had been around a long time, this she-turtle; years and years she had come here, to this very spot, and had roosted her young.

It didn’t take long for the tortoise’s movements to completely stop, her nest only half-covered. She was beyond exhausted, her small body pushed to its limits… Perhaps, if only she could have aid, then she could ensure the protection of her new young? For didn’t they deserve just as much of a chance of survival as everyone?

Now, we’ve already established that this she-turtle is old. She has seen many years, experienced many events in life, and has gained knowledge few rarely know. Such knowledge has allowed her to gain abilities that some may not be able to understand, or comprehend. ‘Twas one of the gifts of life. Allowing her glassy brown eyes to slip shut, the tortoise seemed to expand her mind, pushing outwards with a mental wall and feeling for any souls who were close by. One life-form stuck out amongst the rest; an equine, perhaps? Keeping her eyes closed, the mother continued to push, a figure appearing in her mind’s eye. Yes, an equine was about, a chocolate, earthy brown with ebony, silky tresses. Gentle eyes, this one… Perhaps she could help the tortoise in her cause?

’You… Young Maiden of the Earth. Come to my song; the song of the ocean…’

Ree.
It was by coincidence that the bay mare was within hearing distance of the oceans crashing waves. With each day she grew more curious, more inquisitive, traveling further and further away from the safety of the Dragon’s Throat. There was something exciting about adventure, enthralling about journeying from place to place, stumbling upon new findings, experiencing new places and sights. Never in her life has she seen the ocean, and now she stood on the sandy shores, the frothy surf swirling around her hooves. She stares down with childish delight at her reflection, hazel eyes bright and mirthful, and with cautious intrigue she drags one fore hoof through the water as it rushes up to meet her, sending the white foam splashing through the moonlit air.

There was nothing greater than the simplicity of joy, untainted and pure, as it settled over her soul like the moonlight on her coat, turning dull bay to shimmering copper beneath the silver rays. She is content to linger there in blissful disregard of the rest of the world, for a while, but something distracts the nymph from her idle entertainment. Her green eyes turn away from the waves, slender ears perked forward as she turns to look back over her shoulder, further beyond the shore were sandy beach grass begins to grow. There is a gentle tug on her heart, an uncanny calling, and for a moment Ree imagines that she hears a voice trying to spirit her away.

“You… Young Maiden of the Earth. Come to my song; the song of the ocean…”

As if she no longer controlled her own motions, Ree pivots from the Oceanside, and begins to slowly and methodically follow the call of the melodic voice. She hums pleasantly as she goes, picking up a slight jog that sends sand flying past her hooves as they throw up the dust with each fluid stride. The crash of the ocean at her back is a gentle, soothing sound that reminds her of thunder storms in the spring, and Ree searches determinedly through the darkness for the one who has called her. Or perhaps she is losing her mind, imagining things for the sake of giving her scattered, racing thoughts something to hold onto. It wouldn’t have been the first time…

But that is when she sees the turtle, a creature of ancient beauty and archaic elegance, settled in the sand before her. Nearly stepping on the creature, Ree halts and pedals backward, head bowed sheepishly in surprise. Wide eyed and uncertain she lowers her petite head so that she is nearly eye to eye with the she turtle, and she notes the nest that is half buried behind her. Nostrils flared, she smiles, an impish, innocent sort of grin that lights up her eyes and warms her against the coolness of the night. Above them the stars glimmer and glitter, and the moon rests steadily in the sky, casting both mare and turtle in gentle, silver light that illuminates the world around them in an eerie glow of monochromatic grey.

“Are you the one that calls me?” Ree asks quizzically, observing the turtle with doe like eyes, nothing but kindness and sincerity displayed upon her face.
