Totem
Time waits for no one, so do you wanna waste some time?

His egg was moving, Totem noticed, lazily turning his attention to the pale thing. Perhaps he had been right to bring it here, making the short journey from the Basin with his prize carefully held in his mouth. He had thought it a mere whim, but now he had to wonder if that was truly the case. For while the tundra was far more open than the cave in which he had found the odd egg, it seemed safer somehow. More private, with the majority of horses choosing to remain away from the wide expanse of snow and ice.

Tail swishes languidly as he watches the tiny struggle, waiting patiently for the unknown beast to emerge, but soon his interest wavers. Rather than keep fascinated eyes on the trembling shell, he turns away, surveying his current surroundings with a dispassionate stare. Every detail is soaked in, a rock there, a large drift there, until nothing remains to catch his fleeting mind. It is then that a tiny yap compels him to look to his egg again, though it is not an egg any longer. Instead, a small puppy is struggling to its feet, surrounded by fragments of calcium and wet with the fluids that had once held it safely inside its prison. Orbs of flame widen slightly, for he had never expected to hatch a pup, especially one of such unusual coloration. His, and Totem holds no doubt that the creature is indeed a he, fur glistens slightly in the sunlight, the color an odd mixture of silver and brown, marked with orange-red that matches the eyes that take them in. Yet, the pups eyes do not glow with hellfire, as one might expect, but instead reflect the color of intense lightning, a luminous blue that gazes up at him with a mixture of confusion and adoration.

This is his, Totem realizes with a start, and not simply because he had claimed the egg. There is a sense of connection, of utter belonging that is almost terrifying in its strength. There is also the feeling of hunger, one that cannot be denied, and the stallion knows that it comes from the pup toddling around his hooves. He had not expected a canine, and so is unprepared to feed such a creature, possessing no meat with which to appease his companion. Another demanding bark, sharper this time than the first, stirs the stag into action, prompting him to scan the area for any signs of life. There are none, but a small lump draws him forward. There, almost buried beneath the snow, lays the carcass of a rabbit, preserved by the cold. His tiny bonded falls upon the thing at once, savagely ripping into the flesh. Yet, Totem doubts that such a small offering will satisfy the pup, though it may take the first edge off of his hunger.

The puppy will need a name as well, he thinks, and almost instantly a word is floating in his brain, as if summoned by his thoughts. Laise. Along with the word comes the sense of knowing, and an image of the pup. Well, the flaxen buck is not one to argue, and so he accepts the name with little more than a shrug. From now on, his companion will be known as Laise.

Who is still hungry, and searching for his next meal, having finished off the rabbit more quickly than Totem had thought possible. The hound growls in displeasure, stumbling through the deep snow to stand at the side of his caretaker, glaring up as if this whole situation is the stallion's fault. Heaving a sigh, the bay again begins to look for anything that the pup may consider food. He can already tell that caring for Laise will be much more work than he imagined, but he is unable to leave the hound to fend for itself.

Fool.

(OOC: Just wanted to rp out Laise's hatching, but others are free to respond :) )
