It is a morning in Tallsun that glows with a soft red line along the horizon, the sun making its arduous climb to the peak of the baby blue sky; a hawk screeches somewhere far off, its cry echoing through the young morning light. The sand glows smoking golden-red, the lake laps crystal blue, the tree of the Dragon's Throat sways its leaves in the morning breeze.

But what draws the eye is the sand upon the dunes, quivering and wavering into life, swirling dust motes that whirl faster and faster until they are a blur. Strangest of all is how they move in a circular fashion when there is no wind to guide them around, or create "desert devils" as they are sometimes known. Out onto the sand slithers a snake, tall, imperious, larger than life; as black as night with faintly glowing blue eyes, strange patterns along its scaly back. Wings grow from mid-body, large feathered wings, sparkling liquid blue, scattered with white stars. As it falls out from the desert sands, it hisses, coiling tightly, neck rising above body, tongue flickering out to taste the air. The snake nears twenty feet in length, about a half-foot wide; it's wings are small and appears to be useless, but you never quite know.

The snake's name, for the sake of the story, is Sae, and Sae is hungry and tired. He wants food, delicious flesh; and he knows he is in a desert land of horses and flying things. Maybe he will find a foal to rip from limb to limb, for it is that sort of season...
