Wake up, little one

The child stirred from her place upon the ground, stirred and blinked sleepily against the leaf-dappled light. It is time, dear child. The voice was soft, ancient, and it hummed through her mind as no more than an echo of her own thoughts. It was instinct that told her to listen, a deep awareness that she could not have explained even if she had the words to do so.

With a sigh - she was so very, very tired - the delicate filly gathered her legs beneath her and pulled her small body up. It was clear, then, that she was very young, and very small. In fact if any were to spot the tiny girl they might wonder what she was doing here, and why she was alone. Where was her mother? Where was her family?

Ah but she turned to the trees and smiled (for she was at the outskirts, at the edge of this strange land, in the thickest part of the forest). “Hello ma,” she whispered, stepping forward (surprisingly steadily) and placing a whiskered kiss to the rough bark of the nearest oak. “Hello pa,” she murmured next, and now her lips found the wide berth of a pine. A giggle followed abruptly, and the silver dapple child kicked up her heels and bounced a few steps before whirling back around to the trees. It was the innocent gesture of a child, one too naive to fully realize the gravity of her situation.

It was cool, but she seemed not to notice. With eyes like the ivy in the forest she twirled and danced and laughed, and when she was tired she leaned against the steady bark and sighed, happy. Happy, but (and this she noticed distantly, as if it were not really a part of her) hungry. For this was no world for a girl-child to be alone. Not even one as she, this little nymph of the trees.

I was happily trotting through the forest, with my golden mane bouncing along my back. This day was going to be great! I was filled with a new found happiness, because the sun seemed to be shining brighter than ever, and I felt more at home in this forest than ever before. My forest green orbs were sparkling as I scanned the beautiful place. The green foliage, everything was just perfect! I moved some branches out of my way with my horn, as I lightly ran through the trees. I hoped to find someone out here, maybe to just converse with. I emerged from the trees, onto a small clearing full of yellow wild flowers, and butterflies fluttering about. With pure curiosity, I bent down on my knees to sniff the flowers. They were the type of flowers that I saw on my previous trips through the forest. Sour flowers. I looked at the bees swarming around, and I stood up to avoid stepping on the delicate little insects. The sun warmed my back as I merged into the forest, my home.

After walking about some more, I saw a little lady kissing the rough bark of two trees. She was very petite, but beautiful, and seemed to be at home. I cautiously approached her, instantly shy again, but also I walked slowly not to scare her. "Hello there m'lady", I respectfully said. I was slightly nervous, but my eyes reflected nothing more than happiness. "I am Faelon!" I chirped. "And you must be?" I said. "It is quite dangerous to be out here alone", I almost whispered. I didn't want to startle her, so I observed the trees around her while awaiting her reply.

The two were a queer sight, being that father towered over child by tenfold. He moved with cat-like grace and she seemed to blunder about in his wake, darting through his shadow as if it were some game. She had managed to clip his heels a few times in her ruthless assault and he prayed that she would settle at some point throughout the trip. He had requested a little bit of alone time with the filly and perhaps he thought her capable of accompanying him to the Threshold, but she was quickly proving that particular theory wrong. From time to time she would squeal and hiccup and try her best to lay ruin to the silence as if it were her personal mission while her father wondered if they would even be able to get within fifty feet of another living creature.

When the path into the claiming grounds finally opened enough for her to pass her hefty guardian, the small badger-faced child ran forth into the open forest. Her pitchy song was enough to allow her father to follow in her distant footsteps and scowl at her “obedience” despite her mother’s chiding otherwise. It would appear that bringing her along was a bad idea, but he was focused enough and perhaps patient enough to decide that once she was within his grasp once more, they would simply return home.

However, by chance, as the filly floundered through the shade of the pines and the watchful gaze of the oaks, she happened upon another like herself. She’d never witnessed such a thing in her few short weeks and her obnoxious squealing after such a discovery had the stallion hot on her heels. She wasn’t sure what he would do about the filly but her fascination was clearly piqued by the other silvery child. Her face widened and contorted into what she would soon know to be a smile but no words could pass due to her tender age.

There was a strange stallion in her company as well, one that looked entirely out of place beside such a young symbol of life. Thor bristled at the thought of leaving them alone because with a child of his own, he couldn’t be sure. His introduction was enough to warn the rigid father of the nonexistent bond between the two and he stepped forward before snorting at his daughter in order to keep her seated at his flanks. She wasn’t happy about his command but stood trembling alongside him with bright eyes focused on the other girl. “You speak as if your home in the wilds would be more suitable for a child so small.” His voice was gruff and perhaps a bit protective because he could only imagine how he would feel if it were Essetia standing in this filly’s place.

As if on cue, his daughter rumbled with greeting as she drew closer to the older fillyl, her small velvety muzzle extended in hopeful acceptance. She danced in place with as much grace as she could muster, though it wasn’t much before turning back to gaze into the warm eyes of her cherished patriarch. He mumbled slightly, unsure of the pallid brute who spoke words that were almost sickly sweet. The child didn’t appear to find comfort at his side and neither Thor nor Essetia could recognize a relationship between the two. Thor wasn’t even certain if her mother would soon appear from the shade of the trees and chastise their presence or if she had somehow ended up here alone. But the longer he stood, attempting to block excited advances from his own child as she nipped and nibbled at his toes, he realized that the other was truly abandoned, aside from what appeared to be an unwanted guest.

Essetia whickered to the filly, inviting her away from her loneliness if even for a short time; for she had no concept of such a fate should they leave the girl alone with the young brute. She was clearly intrigued with the other child and wanted nothing more than to reel off into the trees with her, but once again a hardened grunt held her to place. “Come little one, Essetia and I will escort you to the World’s Edge and see that you are taken care of properly” His tone admonished the other brute, obviously unimpressed with his attempt to carry her off into the harsh world of the wilds. She was not meant for the life of a rogue and he would see to it that she wasn’t left to such.

OOC| I wrote Essetia in so I’m sorry if this is a bit confusing. I’m still getting used to playing her.

As fate would have it, the filly was not meant to be alone long. Indeed no sooner had she rested her fluttery body against the tree a stranger emerged. Eldrinn did not hear his words, for her ivy eyes had immediately been drawn to the horn that spiralled from his forehead. What magic was this? What strangeness? He seemed to be a horse like herself (for she knew not of the wings that would one day sprout, turning her in to something much more than a simple horse) but what of that horn?

Eldrinn puzzled over this for some time, until the last of his words echoed through her mind and she giggled. “Silly creature,” she admonished, in a voice far beyond that which a child her age should claim. “I am not alone.” With a kick of her heels she brushed against the oak again, peering up at it’s branches with an expression that was nothing short of adoring.

“Ma and Pa would never leave me alone.” And this small creature, this tiny filly with a mastery of language far beyond her months of life, giggled again. She might have gone on, might have admonished him further, or perhaps introduced him to her dear parents, had their little meeting gone uninterrupted.

She turned again with a whirl, the childish squeal bringing light to her eyes. For though she may speak as an adult, and may possess herself with a grace unusual for those with such gangly legs, she was still very much a child. And as she turned from the tall stallion and faced instead a girl no bigger than herself, Eldrinn could think of nothing more than the fact that she had happened upon a playmate.

A playmate that was all too suddenly blocked by a much larger beast. With a crane of her neck the faerie girl peered up at him, again oblivious to his words as her eyes beheld a much more important and fascinating sight. For there, sprouting from his shoulders where should be only hair, were wings. Wings like those of the birds in the sky, and dear sweet Ely was rendered quite speechless.

You must go with them, little one.

The deep reverberation broke her concentration, tearing her gaze away from the fine feathers and instead to the pine and oak she had stepped away from. In a twirl and a kick she was back to the rough bark, pressed against it as if it were a lifeline, a tether to another, safer, less strange world. “I do not want to go,” she pleaded quietly, a whisper not meant for those who had gathered.

It is no time to argue dear heart, you will not be safe here.

And she knew, instinctively, that she could not argue. Yet fear stayed her hooves and wide eyes bounced
from one form to another, uncertainty written in to every line of her petite form.

I saw the young filly eyeing me as if I grown a third eye. Surely she has heard stories of unicorns, the shy faes that lived hidden in the deep forests. The deep forests. Endless trees and shelters. I was glad I didn't go to the beach. It would've been a torture for me even though I really did want to see the endless blue for the first time. The little fae started giggling after what I told her. "I can tell that you're not alone", I said adoring the trees that encircled us. I pointed my horn torwards the tree. "The woods is our home", I said. "We are never alone", I said smiling, agreeing with the filly's point. The trees that encircle and protect us. I felt protective of this giggly filly. I smiled at her, ensuring that I was nice despite my strange appearance of my horn. I suddenly heard something and a large male pegasus approached. His little daughter, I assumed came out beside him towards the little filly. She gave off a little whicker, and I heard the giant brute talk to her, telling her to come off with him.

I knew if the little filly went off with him, she would be much safer. "I think you should let the filly decide", I told the male. I wasn't angered, yet I said it in a calmed, peaceful tone. I heard what she slightly whispered. "You can choose", I said in a calmed voice. I stared at the other male. He did offer much more protection to her, and I was thinking about joining the edge also. Forest and sea. "Sir, by any chance would the edge be interested in taking in another member?" I asked the male. I knew from talk that the edge had forest.

"Why would a stallion seeking to steal away a young filly to the dangerous wilds of this realm have such a sudden change of heart?"

The voice echoed with a faraway, mystical chant, bounding and rebounding off the nearby timbers, speaking as if from the earth, the air, the ether of the land. My violet eyes absorbed the scene swiftly, my finely crafted ears tilting atop my tiara, capturing what was said with as much ease if it everything had been whispered to me, and me alone. My slender frame pulls itself from the surrounds, looking between the unicorn stallion, so pale and unfamiliar, who tried to hard to give advice to the chocolate youngster, who only sought solace and comforts of an absent family. I offered a smile to the youth, the corners of my mouth creasing with warm welcome. I lowered my horned crown to her unhorned façade, tilting it so that its sharp point would not poise a threat to her.

"The World's Edge is a land where those who have sworn to protect their kin against all else reside. It is a land of mists and darkness, of forests and oceans, of beauty, grace and family."

I speak the words with passion to the youth, my voice lowering in volume, so that only a whisper drips from my maw, deigned to tickle only this little one's ears. With familiar ease I look up to the titanic beast who stands nearby, with his youth lingering near as always, a similar smile curling my lips, though this one is one offered to a comrade, a member of my kin. I would admit to a friendship having been forged between us, forged by the repetitive meetings we seem to have as we welcome new creatures to our borders.

With much less affection in my gaze, I turn a steely stare onto the unicorn stallion, who seemed indecisive to say the least, wanting to whisk away this youth to the dangers of the wilds, and then change his mind and enter my herdland? It was not something I could allow, it did not sit well with me. I look to the chocolate youth once more, my gaze softening, my voice smooth and honey-like in its sweetness. "I am Hellena, young one. What is your name?" Deciding to, for the most part, ignore the existence of the pale unicorn stallion, I focus a cheery smile upon this youth, hoping to provide her with a promise of a home that would fulfil all that she unknowingly sought in this world.

It seemed like more than one from World's Edge had ventured to the Threshold this day. Heavily pregnant she may be, be that did not stop Solstice from wanting to wander. If Torasin knew of her walks outside of World's Edge, well she was not sure what the father to be would say. Surely from a healer point of view she needed to stay safe with in their own boarders. However she was restless with the news of an oncoming invasion to the Foothills. Her son, her beloved and only son lived there. The only comfort the painted lady had was that he had promised to send his bonded pup to her once the invasion had begun. Until the pup he called Alanna arrived Solstice tried not to worry. She did however try to stay in shape given the now larger than normal belly. Her belly was even larger than her last two pregnancies. Of course being a twin it made her wonder if it was possible for her to be carrying twins as well.

However all of this was pushed far from her mind as a warm TallSun wind brought her a familiar scent. It seemed there was more from her herd out in the Threshold today. Eagerly Solstice moved their way, her trot looking more like a waddle. She could not move very fast for long, as tiny hooves on the inside of her belly would begin to kick in protest. The golden and ivory mare found herself walking again very soon, but was thankful that it did not take her long to reach the others. It was a strange group that was for sure. Two unicorns, one she recognized as the Seer of World's Edge, a pegasus who also was from World's Edge, and two equine fillies. One filly was standing near the pegasus and left solstice to assume he was her father. Ah how lucky the little girl was to grow up with such a devoted father...

Quickly she shoved those thoughts aside as she caught the last of the conversation. It seemed one of the fillies was homeless, and the male unicorn had seemed intent on taking her out into the winds of Helovia. Hazel eyes flashed in his direction. Some males were so stupid. However it seemed lucky that not only the father and daughter pair but the Seer had happened upon the situation and were trying to bring the filly home to World's Edge. Even in her current state of pregnancy, Solstice was protective of those that she called family... and that included all who called the World's Edge their home. Without a word the golden fem moved to stand between the unicorn stallion who was so indecisive and those of her homeland. All children were safer with family, and that was something the World's Edge could provide that this loner could not. Perhaps you should put some thinking into your choices, before so hastily jumping from one choice to another. Hazel eyes were cold as stone as the mother looked at the male unicorn. However the moment she turned her head to face those of her home they softened in an instant. I do not believe I have formally met you all. I am Solstice, one of the Philosophers of World's Edge. She smiled warmly before turning back to the outcast once more as he did not carry the scent of any other herdland of him. Her eyes returned to that of stone as she spoke to him again. Before you think next time of taking a child into the wilds of Helovia, think of what is best for the child instead of your own loneliness. Her voice had the tone of a mother scolding her child, even if this stallion was not much younger than she was. In fact he should know better and if he did not he had some maturing to do.

Anyone from my past,
Get your ammo

The little youth chirped happily at her father’s side, edging this way and that until she felt as though he wouldn’t mind if she left him altogether. Spindly legs swayed beneath her as she sought the company of the chocolate filly, her velveteen muzzle outstretched as she grew closer, eager to touch the downy hide of her new acquaintance. Her scent was musty like the forest and it sat thick upon her tongue as she inhaled slowly. An excited squeal burst forth from her lungs and she bucked violently afterwards hoping to gain a reaction from the older girl. If her father hadn’t been quick to reprimand her there would have been a chance that she would have led the filly into a headlong chase between the tress in a merciless game of tag. But alas, Thor was there pressing rounded teeth into her tangled threads to remind her of who exactly was in charge of her decisions. Her murmurs of protest were enough to warrant another swift nip from her father before she finally fell quiet beside him.

She was eager to head off into the trees and romp through their tall shadows but it wasn’t long before her ambitions were abandoned in favor of whimpering softly as two more mares emerged from the tree line. Her tiny legs started quaking in all of the excitement and for once she didn’t test her father’s limits in fear of finding swifter consequences elsewhere. Her eyes were then affixed once more to the other child, questioning and pleading for her to come closer. Whatever drove her incentives was something not entirely novel due to her lack of urgency. She was but a child… and yet, it seemed that she was the only one who stood to judge one’s character without prior influences. Everyone was worthy in her eyes until proven otherwise.

I looked at the two new horses arriving. Their hateful glares, scorned at me. I wasn't deterred though. I might be nervous and shy, but I had no reason to fear. "I had no intentions what so ever at hurting the filly. I was giving her a chance to choose wether she wanted to belong to the wilds, and if she wanted a herd". Did those horses actually think I wanted to steal away a filly. Though I wasn't the type to get angry easily, their rudeness burned, and I was feeling slight anger. "You know nothing of me, and don't accuse me of stealing", I said. I didn't say it in an angered, nor annoyed tone, but in a nice, peaceful tone. I wanted them to know that I offered no harm, and my intentions were to protect the young filly. I knew what it was like to be alone, and I knew what it was like to be in a herd. I had best intentions for the filly, and even if she did choose to come with me, or roam in the wilds, I believed I was now edging closer to joining the World's Edge I had heard about in many different stories. I saw the other little filly by her father and I looked at her. I felt protective of fillies and foals, and I knew I had no bad intentions for any little ones.

I looked at the pregnant mare, Solstice as she introduced herself to all of us, and Hellena who told us a little bit more about the World's Edge. I saw her shoot me steely glares and act all passive with the filly. I knew I wasn't going to be welcomed if I joined the worlds edge. I felt so empty, and alone, with a sadness filling my chest. Was it that I would be an outcast forever. No one would sympathize with me, even though I did have the best intentions. "I am sorry for angering you, but I just wanted best intentions for the filly", I said looking apologetically at the two females, and then cocking my head towards the male.

More came.
And more.

It seemed only a moment, a blink of her eye, and the small child was surrounded by those most unfamiliar. Horns and wings made no difference to her - they were all equally strange. Odd, that she should find such appendages so unusual, had she not seen such things before? Yet for all that she wracked her mind to try and recall, there seemed to be no memories before this day, before the moment when she had first opened her eyes to the soft voice in her mind. It spoke up again, soothing amidst the angry words and harsh glances that were doled to the first stallion, whom she had believed to be nothing but kind.

These will be your new family, the voice murmured, they will take care of you, dear one.

In response she pressed her tiny body against the tree trunk, a silent protest to the voice that urged her to leave. The forest felt safe to her, familiar even, and she was hesitant to leave the leafy protection that it offered. It was only when a question was posed to her that she seemed to take notice, blinking up at the horned mare that asked it. Her name? Well, now that was a question, wasn’t it? Eldrinn was about to answer that she simply did not know, when a name was provided for her. Eldrinn. Ely, for short.

She giggled and peered up at the stranger, feeling suddenly less afraid. “They say my name is Eldrinn, but that you can call me Ely, if you want.” So strange how she spoke with such mastery of language, such familiarity with her words despite how young she truly was. Or how young she appeared to be.

Eventually her attention was pulled away from the mare and towards the other small creature, the filly that seemed not much younger than herself. Eldrinn could practically see the excitement rolling off of her in waves, and it elicited another soft giggle from the velvety lips of the child. With disregard for all else that was happening around her she broke away from the rough bark and stepped ever so daintily forward. A reassuring and encouraging murmur from the voice was all she heard, oblivious to the arguments and defences happening between the adults. Frankly, she found it quite boring, and was quite unaware that it was her own future they argued over.

“Do you want to play?” The question was for the filly alone, and it was accompanied by a brilliant sparkle in the ivy eyes of the wood nymph. “They said I’m supposed to go with you.” Well, they hadn’t said the child specifically, but Eldrinn assumed that she was very much a part of this gathered bunch, and that by going with her she would be, in essence, going with them. With bright eyes she waited for an answer, not even sure if their original offer still stood.

The arrival of Solstice was surprising, though at the same time, her motherly tendencies could attribute to her need to be here, to protect a youth, to guide her in the right direction. The painted femme met my eyes, and proffered me an introduction - I did not respond directly, aside from bowing my delicate tiara in response, acknowledging that we had now been formally introduced. Her warnings to the unknown stallion were harsher than those I had originally applied to him, and I almost felt a pang of regret at his situation - he handled himself calmly, but while he was cool and collected in his replies, the fact still remained that his intentions were unclear. He claimed them to be sincere, to be true, honest, justified them by claiming he was protecting the youth - just as they were. But was it wise to tempt a minor to go and frolic in the wilds?

"What you say is correct Sir, we know nothing of you, and therefore, we cannot trust you, nor can we take your words for truth." Calmly my voice replies to his own. Perhaps I was harsh in my judgement, but like he said, we had only these few moments to judge him by. Maybe, if he proved himself worthy in the future, our judgements would change. "Perhaps if you could see the situation through our eyes you would understand." I add, tilting my crown slightly as I peel my violet gaze away from him, redirecting it to the interaction of the fillies before us. It was questioning circumstances indeed, though perhaps if was just as questionable for Thor to arrive here and offer the filly a home in the Edge. But that was different, for I knew Thor, I knew his heart was pure, his intentions truly good. He offered these newcomers true promise, true potential, whereas this unknown steed offered nothing more than a dangerous adventure in the wilds of Helovia - what more could he offer?

I smiled as the fillies entered their own world, a land of play and intrigue, and without hesitation, I angle my bodice to encourage their play to occur in the direction of our home, of this little Eldrinn's new home, the World's Edge. I look to Thor and Solstice expectantly, hoping they pick up on the subtle, silent language, and aid me in ushering these youths back towards safety. "Perhaps if you prove yourself, stallion, you might earn yourself a home amongst our ranks. For now, I can only recommend you to appeal to our leader." I offer the information to the pale horned steed over my shoulder. It is unlikely that he would ever gain my own trust, but perhaps if he proved himself worthy.. Time would tell.

"Come, girls," I say warmly, bowing my tiara to their height, a gentle smile curving my pewter lips with a playful amusement sparkling behind my eyes. With a low wuffle, I trot forth with lengthy, flowing strides, coaxing and encouraging them to follow, to comes and discover what a family, and a home, truly means.
