AELERIN

So many emotions drummed up inside the fae as her hooves carried her ever nearer to the impending darkness that was the edge of the towering forest. The excitement that now she was getting to see even more of this ever fascinating place she had so abruptly found herself – first the Threshold, then the heavenly fields, and now this. Her nares flared widely as lungs dragged in the surrounding oxygen, bringing with it earthy, acidic scents that reminded her of a past life. Beneath the excitement, though, was an inkling of an innate fear of the unknown coupled with the trepidation of entering a place that was rank with the sorrows and deaths of long ago.

Still, the petite mare pushed onward, lithe limbs carrying her easily over fallen logs and branches, her unabashed sense of adventure whispering softly to her to carry on. Every step she took cloaked her in a new shade of darkness, until she was wholly engulfed by the ancient woods on all sides. Aelerin paused for a moment then, sides rising and falling in the half light as she let her eyes adjust to her new surroundings. It was these experiences that she lived for – the exploration of the completely unknown, and the possible danger that came along with it. Indeed, as she stood there completely still, tiny ears pricked forward with the pale spots of light shining through the canopy casting mottled spots on her coat, she was almost sure that she could hear the muffled hoof beats of another equine through the thick underbrush.

Romani

The monochromatic creature was hunched over in the trees, waiting, watching… Crisp and frozen ice-blue eyes stayed locked on her target, lithe body low to the ground, the black, fuzzy tip of her tail flicking left and right as she waited for the opportune moment to strike. Spotted ears tipped back, teeth bared, and within the depths of the forest there was nothing but silence. Then, she struck. Clawed paws left the ground in a mighty leap, fore-limbs outstretched to try and pounce on her prey, and seconds later only laughter erupted from the deep forest.

Romani had been minding her own business, enjoying the earthly presence of the surrounding trees when Kasai had begun her game of hide-and-pounce. Of course, being much bigger than her precious companion, the Haflinger had simply waited and refused to be a part of the ‘pouncing’ portion of their playtime, the strands of her flaxen tail flicking idly and proving to be an enticing play-thing for the young tigress. It was her tail that Kasai had pounced upon, paws gently swiping at the creamy strands, attempting to pull them closer to her fanged maw to chew on the long hairs.

The cub’s antics caused the mare to laugh, her crisp, azure eyes resting gently upon her bonded.

“Aren’t you getting a little too big for these games?” Romani asked upon a laugh, tossing her head to rid her cumbersome forelock from her gaze, “I think Azel’s youth is rubbing off on you.” For, indeed, her mate’s beloved King Cheetah companion was still little, much younger than Kasai herself, but the two could be found romping around the Edge, tangled in piles of limbs and thrashing tails in their violent play.

Sitting back on her haunches, Kasai gave her bonded a curious look, sending a wave of innocence through their bond. The question as clear, even though no words were spoken - What? I haven’t done anything. With a shake of her head and breathy chuckle, Romani turned to glimpse at the ravine she stood at, lifting her gaze to sweep across the thicket of trees that surrounded her. The memories that she had of the Deep Forest were rather bitter ones, and honestly, the warrior-mare found herself even wondering why she had come back here.

This was where she had been held prisoner by the Grey, pregnant and alone without Xanthos or her family of the Foothills herd. This was where she had remained, helpless against the growing plot to overthrow her home and loved ones. This was where she had met with Svetlana, shortly before her untimely death. This was where she had sworn never to step foot again, simply because it had become associated with unpleasant memories… Yet here she was, back in the dancing shadows of trees. What had drawn her here, exactly? Giving her head a rough shake, Romani turned on her haunches, tail flicking to the side. Perhaps her gypsy spirit had yet to fade…

“Come along, Kasai,” she called over her shoulder, neck twisting prettily to look at the said cub as she beckoned the creature to follow, “We should be getting back home before Xan worries.” The black and white tigress immediately followed, padded paws trotting alongside the golden-red equine. Through the trees they wove, moving at a leisurely pace, when something, suddenly, caught the mare’s attention. Footfalls in the distance, muffled due to the thick vegetation of the forest, but they were undeniably that of another equine.

The warrior’s ears tipped back slightly, preparing herself for who she would find. Would it be a member of the Grey? Or someone else? The previous apprehension, however, slipped off her like silk as she spotted the dainty creature who had been approaching, and immediately Romani’s azure eyes soaked up her appearance. This newcomer was an equine, and a grullo, like Xanthos. She was taller than Romani herself, but then again… Most in Helovia were. Giving a nod of her head in greeting towards the other female, the gypsy spoke.

“I’m terribly sorry,” she began, dark lips twisting upwards in a genuine smile, “I didn’t expect to see anyone else out here. My name is Romani.” That wasn’t entirely true, but Romani was glad to have found someone who wasn’t apart of the Grey… Or, at least, she hoped not. Tipping her head to the side, she motioned to little Kasai. “And this is Kasai, my companion.”

[ooc: Sorry this is late… And kind’ve rambly. XD]
