The previous night, a summer storm had rolled onto the beach. But this was no gentle shower. It was a true storm of roiling black clouds, screaming wind, and stinging rain that pelted the sand and any creatures foolish enough to be out in it. The sea had turned from a flat blue mirror into a churning, angry monster that attacked the beach and attempted to carve out great gouts of land with it's curving clawlike waves. But the beach had been there for a thousand years, and it will be there a thousand more. The storm screamed and fought with itself into the wee hours of morning, until finally, exhausted and sullen, it had crept away, leave the day to dawn sodden but clear. The beach was strewn with debris, bits of shells and driftwood and seaweed, as well as a handful of dead fish, giving the gulls a field day.

One creature refused to die, though, no matter how many gulls stalked near her body. She was at once alien and familiar to an equine onlooker, something resembling a cross between a horse and a fish. From the head to the barrel, she was equine, but she lacked back legs. In their place was a dolphin-like paddle tail, once powerful enough to send her through the water with a mere flick, now flopping weakly back and forth, the only sign of life aside from her heaving chest. Instead of fur, she was covered in glittering scales that were slowly loosing their sheen. They were a medly of ever-changing colors, mostly deep seafoam green with hints of lavender and even light blue as the light hit them. A ribbonlike dorsal fin stretching from her shoulders to her rump drooped like a sad banner from her back as she lay on her right side, belly facing the sea. Her mane was composed of actual hair, and was the same shining color as her body, if a bit more green. The creature's eyes, impossibly deep blue in color, were slowly glazing over, exhaustion and heat forcing the life out of her bit by bit. Ten feet in length from nose to tail, which was small for her kind, the hippocampus was tired, frightened, and almost ready to give up.

She had never intended to wash up on the beach. Her pod had been seeking shelter from the storm, she had gotten lost, separated from her family in the dark water. When she was stuck her head above the sea for a breath, a stray wave had crashed directly onto her head, stunning her into darkness. When she woke up, she was laying on the beach, unable to pull herself back to the cool embrace of the ocean.

It wasn't just the gulls and the sun she feared. Since she was a foal, her family had told stories about the landhooves and their harsh ways, killing eachother for a mouthful of grass. The hippocampi, living in their secret lands of flowing sea grass and bright coral gardens, did not know strife between themselves, only from outside forces such as sharks. In their eyes, landhooves were brutish, evil creatures that must be avoided at all costs. And here she was, stranded and helpless.

With the last vestiges of her strength, the hippocampus lifted her head to send a plaintive, oddly musical cry over the ocean, hoping against hope that her pod could find her. But even so, what could they do but watch her die? She was too weak to pull herself back to the water with her front hooves, and even when the high tide rolled in as it was now it would only lap at her. With a feeling of despair, she let her head drop, and waited for death.

But perhaps death would not come for the hippocampus just yet, if a kind soul was to take pity on her.

All hidden and silently, the wolf had wandered through the land in hopes of finding whatever it was she sought. Of that, she was not sure herself, but she was sure she would know once she had found it. Hopefully... Her journey had stopped when land ended in sea and there she had wandered around to watch the waves, until they turned high as the strong wind tore at them. The wolf had hidden under some stone formations and did not leave it until the sun was up and the storm gone.

Padding over the wet sand on all four, she was amazed over how different the beach looked. Seaweed, driftwood, shells of different kinds. All that came in her path deserved to be stopped at and sniffed curiously. It all smelled of the salty water, some things more than others now when the sun started to dry them. Small crabs scurried between the shells in search for food and Arathea the strange wolf stalked after until one of them pinched her in the nose.

That had her lift her head instead and take a good look around as she continued her walk along the beach. And something ahead caught her attention. It looked like a large fish and her first thought was of food. Starting to trot, she made her way over, but stopped when the features of the fish started to resemble a horse. Ears moved back and forth in an uncertain manner and she slowly walked in a large circle around the creature. Her head did no longer say "food". Horses were not food, and this one looked half like a horse. A very strange horse.

"Hello? Does the stranded one understand this speech?" She asked in a clear voice once she had stopped to face the creature's head, still on a safe distance from biting muzzles and flailing hooves. She sat down on her haunches, taking a more relaxing pose while eying the creature with both concern and curiosity.

A scent. A strange scent, like nothing she had ever smelled. Few things gave off smells in the water, but up here on land, her nostrils were assaulted by so many foreign scents and sounds her head hurt. She tilted her head up to see a creature approaching. Alarm raced through her as she shifted, wishing desperately she wasn't beached. It didn't look like a landhoof, but she had never seen one anyway. Besides, anything from the surface world had to be dangerous. It was a medley of browns and whites, with a long mane and a feather that was comfortingly blue woven into it. Instead of being covered in scales or smooth skin, it's whole body appeared to be covered in fur, but much longer than that of a seal. It's face was the most alien part, as were the amber eyes.

The hippocampus gave a frightened snort as the creature circled to sit in front of her. Was it going to eat her? She didn't want to die like this. She wanted the ocean. She wanted her pod.

The thing spoke.

The hippocampus snorted again, this time in surprise. Nobody had ever said surface-dwellers could speak, let alone think. She couldn't totally understand her, but many of the words were familiar. There was a common tongue used by nearly every sentient race, and they tended to shift into it without realizing. While the hippocampi spoke a different dialect, most could make themselves understood to foreigners, even though they deigned not to speak to them. Some of the fear left her eyes, but she wasn't totally off-guard. "Can..can understand." she said shakily. Her voice, like her neigh, was musical and echoing, like flowing water. "Need help. Caught in bad storm and thrown onto the beach." Mustering her strength, she was able to use to tail to push herself onto her belly, folding her legs under her. Her side was caked in wet sand, but at least she could look at the creature easier now. Head hanging, she cast a longing look towards the sea, so tantalizingly close. "I...I need to get back to the ocean." She fixed the wolf with a beseeching look. "Please." Despite her fear, a spark of hope began in her chest.

Arathea kept moving her ears back and forth, tilting her head to the side at the melodic voice that came from the creature. She had still no idea what it could be, but if anything, it was clearly in a dire situation and seemed uncertain of the strange wolf. Thea did not blame it... At least it could understand. Arathea nodded her head at that and watched as the creature moved onto its belly.

"This one can help. Maybe something that came from the sea with you can help as well." She got to her feet and moved closer to the stranded being, sniffing the air in its direction without coming close enough to touch. To scare it even more would be a bad idea. And why would she help even? Because the thought of just leaving the creature there gave her an uncomfortable feeling.

"I will be back very soon." And with that she began to pad along the beach again, rising onto her hind legs every now and then to better scan the surrounding area. It did not take too long before she found something that could be of use; a large piece of thick bark had floated ashore together with the other drift wood and Arathea began to push it in front of her, all the way back. "If stranded creature from the sea could get onto this, I could push it out into sea."

She stopped with the bark-raft just beside the sea creature, placing herself so the piece was between them to keep it from sliding away. Arathea hoped the idea would work. The bark seemed to slide more easy over the sand than if she would try to drag the creature itself. She brushed her long tail slowly over the sand while eying the other one with the same curious look in her eyes as before, hoping that the fear would fade a bit more.

The strange animal could help her? The hippocamp tilted her head, wondering. Did she mean to simply grab her and drag her back into the water? While she didn't know the extent of this creature's strength, the wolf didn't appear to be very large or strong, and while she herself was not unduly large, on land her bulk seemed to be all the more obvious. In the water, she was almost weightless, but it was different when she was beached on land. The sand seemed to cling to her body, making it difficult to move herself. It would be almost impossible for the wolf to move her.

As the wolf crept closer, she shifted, but she no longer feared for her life. After promising to return, the wolf loped off, and she found herself alone again. A worried look was cast up at the sun, halfway to it's zenith. Her scales were drying, losing their sheen, and she felt sticky and uncomfortable under the solar eye. A pair of seagulls that had left when the wolf appeared were now emboldened by her leaving and began to stalk in front of her, turning their heads to look at her with beady eyes. She glared back.

Presently the wolf returned, pushing a large piece of driftwood. The hippocampus was confused at first, but as Arathea explained, understanding dawned in her eyes. The hippocampus nodded, then turned her attention to the board. Hippocampi would often use their hooves in the water, either for mobility or fighting, and this would just be a matter of pulling herself downhill a few inches. She was exhausted, but now she had a chance. With a grunt, her finned tail lifted off the ground and slapped the sand as she used her tail and hooves to push and pull herself towards the driftwood. A few more struggles, and she was on. The wood creaked under her weight, but stayed intact. She was on.

Excited now, she lifted her right hoof and nodded towards it. The board, now mostly covered by her body, would be difficult to hold onto, but her tail and hooves could still be grasped. Her gratitude to the wolf was plainly visible in her eyes. Why had her pod never realized that land dwellers could potentially be friendly? Where had all the prejudice come from?

She held the board still to the best of her abilities while the stranded creature made its way up. Meanwhile, thoughts spun through her head. What if it would not work at all? Maybe the sand would be too heavy and hold back the board being pushed. What if... No, just try and see. If problem came, they would have to re-think and try again. Arathea nodded when the creature was up on the board and made her way to the other side so the board was between her and the sea, snapping at some gulls in the process.

Carefully, she placed one paw over the creature to better help holding it on the board, hoping it would not get startled by the though. The other hand, she placed on the driftwood's edge and then put her chest and weight behind it, giving it a hard shove. The board moved a bit across the sand, and Thea pushed again. It moved a bit more. Then it stopped at the next push. The wolf pulled her ears back in a pondering manner and moved around the board, noted that sand had piled up at the edge.

With a sniff close to a snort, she dug the pile of sand away, moved around and began to push the board again. Should the creature slid off at any point, Arathea would move the board around for it to crawl up again. So she pushed, moved away wet sand and pushed again. Slowly but steadily, the board moved across the sand until the waves started to beat against it.

Arathea grunted, panting slightly now as she shoved the board against the waves that seemed to be wanting to push the board back on land. "Driftwood was taken ashore and can stay, but you have someone who needs to go back." She muttered and grunted in a low voice, more to the sea than anyone else as she gave the driftwood board one final push and the next wave rolling in lifted it from the sand and took it with it out a bit. The next wave would take it out more, and so on and so forth.

As the wolf put it's arm over her to hold onto the board, the hippocamp blinked in surprise. The creature was warm to the touch, unlike the cool, smooth scales of her podmates. Everything was hot and bright up here. It was so strange. She whinnied as the board was shoved a few inches, tossing her head excitedly. The ocean's proximity no longer seemed to taunt her. Now, it gave her hope.

As she continued to be pushed forward, she noticed the sand piling up in front of the board. The wolf apparently noticed it too, and stopped her pushing, then walked to the front and began to scoop away sand. Her clever paws impressed the hippocampus. There was nothing like that underwater. Compared to her nimble appendages, her own hooves felt embarrassingly useless. Once the sand was clear, the wolf began to push her again. She nearly slipped off the front a few times, but was able to stay on. She nickered encouragingly as the ocean became closer. An ambitious wave slipped up the beach, flicking spray onto her sides. The water seemed to energize her, causing her to whinny with joy as the wolf's final shoves pushed her all the way into the water.

The board began to float, and with a twist of her body, the hippocampus rolled off and splashed into the shallow water. Buoyed by the water, she was able to use her front hooves to pull herself deeper in. With a final pull, she was deep enough in to dive, and did so, her tail smacking the water as she reacquainted herself with the ocean.

Moments later, she broke the surface again farther out in a spectacular jump. Her scales had been restored to their normal iridescent sheen, and there was a gleam of pure joy in her eyes. She crashed back down into the water, then popped up closer to shore, looking at the wolf with an expression of unmeasurable gratitude. "Thank you, thank you!" she sang. She bent her neck, pointing her nose at her chest. "My name Kiiuna." she said, then waited for the wolf's name. Giving her name to a land-dweller. What would her friends say?

She flicked her tail in indecision, trying to think of a way to repay the wolf for her kindness. An old story came to mind, allegedly so ancient that it dated to before the land creatures and sea creatures dropped out of contact. "You helped me, so I help you. Need me, wait for full moon and call my name over the ocean. I come." With a final whinny goodbye, Kiiuna dove back into the water, heading for her pod's grazing grounds. She had been away too long.

(This isn't an RE, so she can't give you anything sadly, but if you can think of anything she could do to help Arathea once she'll gladly oblige. Thank you for taking part in this little writing exercise!)

She watched as the creature dragged itself into the water, only closing her eyes to shield them from the splashes the tail made. With a chuckle, she waded out until the waves lapped around her chest and belly, smiling at the creature when it appeared above surface. This felt good. Much better than what it would have felt if she had left the other one to the gulls and the sun.

This one is Arathea." She replied as she stored the other one's name into her memory. Silently she hoped it would not come to that, to need Kiiuna's help. Not that she had anything against her, but because most trouble she could find would be on land. Land Kiiuna would not be able to help on.

Arathea stood there and watched the sea for a long time after Kiiuna had dived into the waves. The water sparkled in the sun's light and the warm wind brushed softly over her fur. With a low sigh, she later turned around and walked back up on the beach, starting her journey into the land once again in search for something. She had to find her King Unicorn. Somehow, she missed him and hoped he would still be alive after the attack that happened a year ago. I should have stayed around. But it was too much... I had to gather myself...

(It is alright, I don't need to be given anything than a good rp. :3 Thank you too. ))
