It's a sickening feeling,
knowing time changes us so much,
but we still feel like our old selves.

The Basin was freezing, personally Arah was glad to be going on a adventure to go get help for The Basin. The sun had not risen yet, the phantom was making sure to leave herself enough time to talk to the leaders of the foothills. Her footsteps exiting the basin, through the pass where delicate and slow. She was planning moves in her head, plotting her speech and her path. She turned and gave one last look over The Basin, at least she wasn't doing this alone, Roland would soon be with her. She was unaware of where he was at the current time, but had faith and trust in him, she knew he would come along. She smiled now as she turned back to the pass and began the walk again. A cold blast of air shocked her as it pounded into her back. Oh yes, this pass had always been cold and cruel to passing adventurers. It was indeed only a few days ago that she had walked through here with a new recruit for her herd, with Mauja. He has said that The Basin was a bit cold. She thought she'd gotten frostbite on her antlers.

Her pace picked up slightly and she began a light trot, she knew that the meeting had to happen soon. The last thing she needed was her home being invaded before she even got the chance to try and make arrangements for assistance should they be attacked. One again her thoughts settled on the task at hand. She glanced around the pass looking for Roland, no sign of him yet but no doubt he would soon show his handsome face. She refused to let her mind stray to their past time together. Arah pressed on, still moving at a steady pace wanting to get to the foothills at first light. Her coat was wet from the snow that had fallen and melted on her back. She would be grateful for the sun to rise soon, it would provide the warmth and light she needed to make this journey easier. From her past travels in and out of The Basin, she knew she was getting close to the end of the pass, then the foothills would be right there.

Once again she picked up the pace, the end of the pass was now in sight, she craved the warmth it's end promised and a break from the howling wind. With a smile pressed to her lips she pranced out of the pass and was finally able to see the world again. The smile remained as she began to make her way over to the foothills, her speech was back on her mind. The unicorns of The Basin where willing to offer the leaders of the foothills, Ktulu & Ophelia, an excellent bargain. Honestly Arah though the foothills would be silly to decline their request. Although the phantom did feel the pressure, she was representing every member of her herd and her Lady Psyche. The snow on the ground was starting to thin out and her hooves made contact with grass and rocks instead of just snow. The warmth from the almost risen sun would be nice, today was going to be one of those gorgeous days, not too hot and not too cold. She passed the last of the mountains in the rage and finally the Windtossed Foothills was in sight. It was a breath taking moment to watch the sun rise over it. Daybreak was here for the Foothills, as was Arah.

She walked towards the border of the Foothills and stopped at the very edge. She waited for a moment and then called out. "Ktulu and Ophelia, leaders of The Grey, I would like to request an audience with you." She spoke only to the leaders as she wanted to get her message across quickly, without being interrupted. So the Phantom stood at the border, while wind tossed the shorter stands of her hair, and waited.

Notes; Requesting an Audience with the leaders of The Grey. We would like to make an alliance/offer.

Ktulu
the Constrictor
ideas are the bombs in your mind, a fissure in time
if you don't have a weapon you can't have mine

The early hours of the morning were often hours that Ktulu spent walking the borders of her new home. It had been a long while since she'd had a place she could actually call home. While she had liked the forest it had not been stable. Its borders were not defined and that left it difficult to defend. That coupled with the knowledge that unknown and unseen monsters often lurked in those woods left it unacceptable. Pride filled her chest as she walked the borders of the Foothills. Her Foothills. The Grey's Foothills.

The Constrictor was alone as she walked, having left her bear to watch over Hototo as he slept. Soon he would be up and about and she would know the minute it happened when Eytan sent her flashes of her son's face as he woke. With the very noticeable lack of her companion, Ktulu was more alert to the world around her. When the subtle shift of the breeze brought a new scent to her, her attitude shifted almost instantaneously. The calm, somewhat peaceful looking demeanor she carried dissipated. Her facial features altered as she donned the stern, frigid look that she always wore when meeting someone she didn't know.

Next came the soft voice of a mare who was calling for her and Ophelia. Pale tail slapped against her legs as Ktulu moved into a swift trot that carried her along her borders until she could see the pale mare illuminated by the slowly rising sun that stood at the very edge of her territory. "You call early." She stated gruffly as she came to stand before the mare, whom she could now pinpoint by her smell, as a Basin mare. "Do you make it a habit to call upon others at such an early hour?" Perhaps she was hoping to not have been met by anyone so she could slip unseen across the borders and wreak whatever havoc she might have planned.

"I am Ktulu." She finally stated, crimson eyes narrowing. "What do you want?" Ever polite and diplomatic, she was as she demanded an answer.

Predawn light was just beginning to slant across the black mountainscape as Roland began his journey out of the Aurora Basin, breath fogging in the chilly air. He had not risen early enough to accompany Arah directly, but followed the meandering trail of her footsteps as they led out of the valley and into the pass. Wind howled in the Phantom's ears as he walked, mulling over the task at hand. He was startled to have been awarded the Dark Empress' trust so soon, when he had been a part of their herd for no more than a season at best; but he was grateful to have been given work nonetheless.

The path he followed, now familiar as he had traversed it many times, was dark and windy. The Phantom felt small and exposed despite the towering cliffs on either side of him, blocking the brightening horizon from view. The last of the northern lights died out overhead as daybreak neared and the stallion travelled further south. Roland's gait was steady, moving quickly over the rocky terrain as he attempted to catch up with Arah before she reached the Foothills. The slightest amount of uneasiness settled in his chest, putting his nerves on edge. The Basin was not looked upon kindly by all, and they would be asking no small favour of their neighbours.

He parted ways with the constricting throat of the pass, stepping into the full throes of autumn as the howling wind died around him, no longer forced along the jagged walls of cliffs. Lush grass met his hooves and the sky opened up before him. The sun was just breaching the distant hills, and Roland could see Arah's white form a ways from him. Lurching into a trot he made his way down the hill towards her, ears perked as the mare called out. He could see he was late to arrive when another shape appeared from the rock laden slopes and stopped before his herdmate.

Cursing his lateness, Roland drew up along Arah's side, brushing his muzzle against her neck in greeting. He caught the black mare's introduction and inquiry, giving her a sombre nod of acknowledgement. "My name is Roland, and this is Arah," he responded, assuming Ktulu had already guessed where they were from; the smell of northern winds and ice must have clung to their pelts. "There are growing tensions between the Aurora Basin and the Dragon's Throat. On behalf of Psyche, we request the Grey's assistance in the event of an attack. We are willing to pay for your efforts."

Ophelia had just discovered she was pregnant, so instead of going to the Aurora Basin to explain to Psyche the impending thread on the Edge as well as the threat of the assassins, she had thought better of it all. The alabaster mare had no patience or tolerance to deal with the Dark Empress' sickly sweet words and cutting gaze; she may just explode in a pale ball of weepy, word wielding wrath (try saying that five times fast). Instead, she traveled from the Steppe after spending time alone to cool her thoughts in light of the news she had just heard. Tears had been shed, anger had been screamed, and now all that remained was a hollow and a sliver of hope.

Something about being pregnant had changed the way she thought about herself. While she was generally unconcerned about her habits and her body, now, she could not stop thinking about the care she would have to put into her daily routine. If she was going to bear this child, she would do so responsibly - as responsibility as possible given her position in the herd. After stopping a few times to make sure that she received adequate food, Ophelia took the same path from the north to reach the Foothills as it seemed two strangers did.

The alabaster mare narrowed her gaze and clung to the shadows, using the magic granted to her by the Earth God as evidence of her leadership over the herd to appear entirely invisible. Darkness still tinted the horizon, the sky barely beginning to turn a navy blue from midnight black. A coolness clung to the air, whispering about the winter yet to come, and Ophelia's cloven hooves carefully walked around the fallen leaves, sure to not step on one.

""Do you make it a habit to call upon others at such an early hour?" Her sister said. Ophelia smiled. "What do you want?"

The alabaster mare came to stand just beside her sister, still invisible for the moment.

"There are growing tensions between the Aurora Basin and the Dragon's Throat. On behalf of Psyche, we request the Grey's assistance in the event of an attack. We are willing to pay for your efforts." The stallion who called himself "Roland" muttered those words, and Ophelia's brows dipped over her strange, dual colored eyes.

After all the times Ophelia had mentioned the Grey to Psyche, the black lead of the Basin had seemed entirely unimpressed. Perhaps that was Psyche's general state of existence, but something about this meeting seemed premature, off, even. Why would the Basin want their help now? And why with the Throat? Onni, the Shaman of the Throat had wanted to help Mauja, and Kri had not seemed perturbed by the unicorns even when Ophelia had been sleuth for their herd. When she visited the Throat, the herd did not seem to be preparing for war; Kri was absent, but her entire slew of warriors had met her calmly.

The alabaster chieftess released the magic that clung to her figure, slowly taking shape like a figure from mist. Ophelia's eyes bored into those of Arah and Roland, two names she had not recalled before. Why was Psyche sending two Basin members who seemed relatively new to ask about this contract? Was there a reason she was not joining this herself? Something did not add up.

"You say the Throat is your herd's enemy, but I have been there and have seen no mobilization toward war," Ophelia said, gaze narrowed every so slightly. The fact that she was pregnant and very round seemed rather odd compared to the intensity of her stance and expression. Normal mares "glowed" when pregnant, but Ophelia seemed to become even more out of place.

"The Grey does not mind fulfilling contracts for payment, but we do expect honesty. Unless you are planning on attacking the Throat and stirring a hornet's nest, I do not see why this contract is necessary." Ophelia said carefully, waiting to gauge their reactions. Did they even know the truth?

Haunted by my eyes,
the way they hold your attention,
even in the loudest silences.

A soft smile settled on her lips as the dark mare answered her call. Golden eyes studied the darker mare, named Ktulu, for a moment, she brought up a good point about the time of Arah's calling. "I do apologise for the early hour." Roland greeted her with a gentle brushing of her neck with his muzzle, making Arah feel calmer. She offered him a small grin then turned politely back to Ktulu. With Roland here she felt the playing field was levelled. Two on two, just an honest chat, hopefully a contract and then the two Phantoms wold be on their way. The antlered mare remained quiet as Roland got straight to the point. They weren't exactly in a rush, but Arah knew that both of them were keen to return to the Basin soon. Keeping a cool head was critical for this meeting, Arah was nervous feeling that the fate of the Basin was sitting on her's and Roland's shoulders. A big deal for two new Phantoms.

When Ophelia appeared, Arah studied the pregnant mare. She asked about their honesty, if their reason for being here really was because they wanted to fulfil a contract with them. Arah titled her head to the side slightly, thinking about her response. It troubled her that Ophelia had been to The Throat, although she was not entirely sure why. Finally she answered. "At the moment there wouldn't be any war efforts in the Throat or The Basin." She paused again looking to Roland and then Ktulu. "Unless provoked there will be no war efforts in The Basin." She looked directly at Ophelia now trying to convey the fact that she spoke with nothing but honesty and good intentions. "We merely wish to have this contract if we are provoked, we are thinking for the worse. Preparing for the worse." Arah wasn't one hundred percent sure why Kri was angry with The Basin, but she was willing to bet that it was because of the prisoners they currently held.

It was time to lay out the case for The Grey. "This contract in necessary because we will sleep a little easier at night knowing we have The Greys help and support." She looked to Ktulu, "You will be handsomely paid should you need help us." She looked back to Ophelia again. "I speak nothing but the truth, I am many things, but a liar is not one of them."

Crimson gaze shifted to the stallion who arrived shortly after Ktulu had addressed the mare, though she showed no concern for there being two of them and only one of her. The Grey, as always, was watching even at such an early hour, should she need them they would be there. The feeling that someone was suddenly beside her caused muscles twitched and Ktulu glanced to her right. Upon seeing little more than open field she focused again on the two unicorns that had called so early. The stallion, Roland, introduced himself and the mare before diving right into their reason for coming to which Ktulu only acknowledged with the tilting forward of her ears.

White flickered in her peripheral vision and the darker sister turned her head back in the same direction she had only moments before. Her sister stood there now, looking quite round and on edge. Ktulu made a mental note to speak with her sister later about her sudden and quite drastic roundness, though the idea that she was pregnant never crossed her mind. Ophelia would not defile herself in such a way unless the stallion was one that she truly cared for and if that were the case wouldn't Ktulu know about him?

The black dun mare listened as her pale sister spoke then listened to Arah as she followed up. "So what is it that you really want?" Ktulu asked with a touch of impatience in her voice. "You ask for defenders and in the same breath you speak as if you are gearing up for war." Would she be able to send her warriors to fight with the Basin knowing that they would be attacking the Throat? Would she be able to put Midas in harm's way and jeopardize whatever it was that was growing between them?

The sudden appearance of a white mare beside Ktulu made Roland start, but he managed to compose himself quickly, casting a curious gaze towards the new arrival. The Phantom was not surprised when she began to voice her concerns about their request, but it troubled him that she seemed suspicious of their intentions. Their motives were not to start a war, but it was a possibility and so they needed to prepare for the worst. Roland remained in pensive silence as Arah responded to the duo before them, nodding in agreement to her explanation as he gauged the Chieftesses’ reactions.

His eyes flicked to Ktulu’s face as she spoke, and he didn’t miss the impatience in her voice. Their distrust in the two Phantoms was leading them to think they had some underlying intent beneath their initial request, so he didn’t keep her waiting for an explanation. “It is true that there is some strain upon the relationship between our two herds, but the possibility of war is uncertain. We are taking precautions, preparing for the worst, if you will. Kri has challenged Psyche for the release of our prisoners, which has made things… uncomfortable,” he intoned, holding the black mare’s gaze with an unwavering, honest stare.

What we are asking for is the Grey’s aid in battle, should conflict break out between the Basin and the Throat. We are not looking for a fight, but preparing for the possibility of one. ” He hoped that in the end the Grey’s protection would not be necessary, that things would quiet down between the two herds. It had been many months since he had stood upon a battlefield, but he was not eager to return to one. “Our craftsmen Ulrik and Crowley have offered their services in payment for your assistance. We would be able to give you machines and weaving in return for your help, though I hope for all our sakes it will not be needed.

Ophelia wondered what her sister would think. Would she adhere to the Grey rules that she wanted? Would she put Midas in harm's way, betray the Throat and what he loved? And for what? For mercenaries? The alabaster mare found such action cold, but maybe that was what she needed right now. The darkness in her heart reveled at the thought of war again, and she would love to see the look on the God of the Sun's face if she marched into the throat to wrench it from his grasp. All of this was speculation of course, as Ophelia respected Kri deeply. But respect was not the way of the Grey. And right now, she was tempted to damn the world and shut away her soul for good.

The stallion gave clear information, to which Ophelia only nodded, glancing at her sister and nearly smiling at her impatience. The alabaster mare's cold gaze settled on the pair, and she relaxed visibly. "I gather information. I do not preside much over the actions of the executioners and warriors of the herd," she explained, turning to her sister.

This is what you wanted.

"Ktulu would have to make that decision, but I cannot imagine anything you asked for violates any policies," - except perhaps personal ones, which do not count. "You are willing to pay; you have given us the names of who is responsible for the payment, and having machinery and cloth items would be incredibly useful." Ophelia's icy heart did not melt. She turned back to pair. "If my sister agrees, I will accompany you two back to the Basin to speak with Psyche directly about particulars,' she said firmly.

And also to chew out some individuals on the behalf of Mesec.

Arah listened to Ophelia and nodded in thanks, "Thank you Ophelia." Arah responded quietly. Next she flicked her gaze to the darker mare, awaiting her response. The pale mare knew that both these sisters did not trust either her or Roland. She could hear the distrust on both of the mare's voices. She did not blame them either, they where from The Basin. People entered and hardly ever left, and most of the occupants of her herd where stuck up or racist. Or both. The Basin did have good souls too though, they where often over looked because of the general bad reports that came from The Basin. Lady Psyche also didn't have the cleanest record. Glancing over to Roland, glad that he had come, she offered him a quick and small smile. The sisters hadn't exactly said no in fact Ophelia had just said herself but I cannot imagine anything you asked for violates any policies. Which in Arah's mind was a cause for hope.

Maybe this deal would work out in the end after all. She watched Ktulu closely now. Butterflies in her stomach. She was nervous yet felt confident at the same time, it was a good deal. One in the start Arah was sure they would accept, now as she looked over the darker mare, she realised that they didn't just jump blindly into any deal. They considered every angle of what approached them, Arah respected the two mares. They where cautious and cautious was smart and safe.

Arah shifted slightly, and ended up standing a little closer to Roland, their shoulders almost touching. Nervous as ever to hear Ktulu's verdict. They had laid the offer on the table and Arah had nothing else to add. They didn't have many fighters in The Basin. Arah herself had only just started to learn how to fight. They just wanted extra protection should they need it, The Grey was perfect. The Basin had no intentions of double crossing The Grey, both Arah and Roland where honest as they stood facing the two sisters. Ktulu now, quite possibly, had the fate of The Basin resting on her shoulders.

They were smooth talkers, these two phantoms that the Basin herd had sent to speak with her and Ophelia. Ktulu's gaze remained critical as she stared harshly at Roland as he continued to speak, proclaiming that the Basin wanted warriors for their defense. The mare that had come before him remained quiet as he spoke, something Ktulu found curious, but at the same time she was somewhat thankful for it. Too many speaking at once would only push her buttons and force her to become... uncivil.

The offer of machinery that fell from Roland's lips drew more of Ktulu's interest than the weaving did. The dark mare's head inclined toward her pale sister when she spoke. There was a question hanging between them, Ktulu could feel it. She wondered just how much her sister knew about her feelings for Midas. Wondered what she would think if she agreed to aiding the Basin in the event of an attack.

In the end she felt deeply for Midas, but her herd was her family and if she had the opportunity to protect them she would.

"In the event of an attack on the Basin by the Dragon's Throat, The Grey will send warriors for defense." She stated. "The Grey expects a half payment upon the agreement of this contract, if no payment is received you contract is void. Any attempt to use any Grey warrior in a way that does not coincide with the contract between the Basin and the Grey will result in a breach of contract and your contract will be voided." Her gaze leveled on the stallion who had done a majority of the talking. "Understood?"

The black dun then looked toward her sister, still wondering what she would think of her decision. Ktulu still had her moments where she thought her sister was too pure for the Grey and sometimes wondered why she had agreed to their cause. "I would like to send Archibald with you." She said. "As head warrior he has an obligation to know the terms of the contract."
