The skull faced stallion stepped foot into his home land. He had become known by most of the people here now, as he was one of the protectors. He nodded to a few horses as he walked by. The fog rolled over the cliff as his ebony body crossed it.

He looked behind him to see if the mare he now knew as Kahlua was following him. He had greeted the mare in the threshold and asked her to follow him home. Her flattery would be liked among certain people, but certainly not among him.

"Welcome to the worlds edge. This here is my home and these people my family. I hope you find this place to your liking. Mirage or Thor shall be coming along soon to see if they would like you to join our family."

He looked away. He hated calling it family, but he knew he had to as his duty to the worlds edge, to Thor, and Mirage. He felt the need to simply walk away. But alas he didnt. He stood by her side and awaited his king and queen. He wasnt sure how things would go if he saw his king again. After all he had told him. Thor still accepted him. He just only hoped his brother did not think differently about him.

((So short Dx sorry... I threw it up really fast because i waited for so long Dx))

Kahlua followed diligently. She watched the winged brute nod to horses here and there and she smiled briefly at the memory of him scoffing at her advances. Her smile faded quickly, however. She may not be very smart, but she was smart enough to know that walking onto another horse's land before you could call it home was dangerous. Especially when fighting was far from her forte. Had she bee a little smarter, she might have been nervous. As it was, she fully expected her association with Duchanar and her flattery to get her through any situation she might encounter. Duchanar had said she must meet the king Thor or the queen Mirage before she would be welcomed. Well let them come. Just as she had at the threshold to Helovia, Kahlua made sure to make every step and motion count. She wasn't good at much, but she was good at looking pretty. Her neck arched as she walked, her steps light and with just a little bit of bounce. Her tail swayed enticingly and her mane lay smoothly along the left side of her neck. Everything was right. She had even taken care to keep her white spots clean as she had traveled with Duchanar from the threshold to the World's Edge. Everything was perfect. As Duch halted she followed suit, listening to his words. “Family?" She laughed brightly. “I knew there was a soft spot in that heart, somewhere underneath that steely attitude you wear.” Her blue eyes were wide and a smile spread her lips as she looked at Duchanar. What would he say this time?
Just keep trying. Keep trying to resist me, keep trying to hide away. You'll love me some day. You say no now, you say what could I, Kahlua, ever offer to you? Keep thinking on it. It'll come to you, and then you'll realize that you loved me all along and you didn't know it. And just watch me work my magic. King or queen, it doesn't faze me. I'll play my part perfect. A deep bow, a few nice words and they'll love me too. I'll join the family, do my duties and before you know it, I'll be living the dream. Remember when I told you life was power? That's the dream. And I'll have it. So maybe you think you don't want to like me, you think your life will be better without calling me a friend. Just remember where I'll be. Then think again.

Days had passed since I had obtained knowledge of Dúchanar’s past, many of which I spent deciding how I felt about him now. He was still the same beast that I had invited into my home some time ago, but I now felt as though I held reservations for the beast in the name of enlightenment. My family had become my pride and their safety was something that sat heavily upon my shoulders now. Could I ever trust an animal that thought it acceptable to hide so much truth from someone they considered friend and brother? Only time would tell and though I was not thrilled about the waiting process, I was somewhat convinced that I could trust Dúchanar to think twice about crossing me.

However, when his musky fragrance found its way to my eager senses, I could not conceal the slight grimace that hardened my lips. I was slow to find my way to his side, but when I did, I was surprised that he had returned to the Edge with a painted mare in tow. I exhaled slowly before nodding to the pair with curious eyes. I had no intentions of relating my former suspicions about Dúchanar to this new creature, divine as she was, but I was content to nod curtly to the brute before turning my full attention to the mare at his side. “Welcome to the Edge my dear; I do hope that you find our amenities to your standards.

I felt no need to introduce myself just yet because I intended to indulge in pleasant conversation before alarming the girl with my title and the intensity that often came with such a position. I wanted her to feel comfortable in my presence before resorting to the automatic reaction of awe that came with meeting any new Lead, though perhaps such reservations were best saved for Mirage as I was often construed as being sickly amiable- not that I minded in most cases. “I’m Thor and I see that you’ve met Dúchanar- he does not often wholly represent the Edge and our customs as some of us are wont to do.” I smiled halfheartedly at the pale-faced stallion in an attempt to convince him of my humor, though I wasn’t quite sure how he would take to my teasing after sharing his past with me…

Quietly, I leaned back onto my hips, now content with the fact that formalities had been covered on my part as I often hated the mundane routine of introductions. For a moment I looked from one blue-eyed creature to the other, quite humored by the idea that the two made a perfect match physically, if not mentally and emotionally. I had no preconceptions about their relationship, but it amused me just the same. After all, I had to entertain myself in some way or another because life could often become humdrum if one let it.

As the cold breeze of Frostfall began to blow against my face, I allowed myself to drift from reality and sway against the soft rushing of the waves in the background of my home. I had no doubts that this mare would enjoy this land as much as I- just as long as I deemed her worthy of calling it her own.

Duchanar looked to the mare as she spoke. She spoke of him having some softness to him. These words made him cringe. Could it be true? Could the evil stallion be starting to feel again? Could he be witnessing what could be the feeling of loyalty? No it couldn't be. He couldn't let himself subside to loving people enough to call them family. But he couldn't let this mare know how he truly felt, never.

Family is simply what one makes it to be. Just because I say they are my family, does not mean it is how I truly feel. I call them family simply because it is my duty to do so, my duty to protect them. But do I trust any of them with my life? Do I trust them to hold my secrets. That is the thing that defines a true family. And I see none of them in that way, except for... He stopped as he heard Thor approaching. He backed away slightly as he spoke, letting his king have the floor.

His face did not change as Thor made a joke, but Duch took it lightly. "Hey now Thor, I cant help it if I am a pompous ass" He chuckled slightly. It was probably the first time Thor had heard the stallion laugh or show any change in his emotion, well for the better and not the worst. He looked back at the mare. "As I was saying, the only one I look to as such is Thor here. And I hope you cant find your way into trusting him wholeheartedly as I have" he nodded in Thors direction.

Duchanar's face changed in response to her words- a look that she hadn't seen on the hike from the threshold to here. Surprising considering how much time they had spent together as the trek had been slowed considerably by raging snowstorms. She wished the cold would hurry off- it wasn't good for the complexion. Sure, she looked pretty now and she took care of herself as best she could but a summer coat was always more pleasing to the eye. Luckily for Duch, the mare was just unobservant enough to ignore it as a response to the environment. She wasn't in to reading faces and guessing feelings. Secrets, a strange thing to keep, Kahlua thought. But maybe she just didn't understand. Such a mysterious being, the white faced bat was. Had he been of more use to her, her interest would have certainly been peaked.

A large stallion, brutish in size, joined Duchanar and herself presently. Clearly, the horse of whom Duch had just been speaking. Kahlua looked him over quickly as he nodded to her companion. He dwarfed her in size such that she would have to look up slightly to meet his gaze. More wings, she noted. They were comparatively small, but it never occurred to her that they would not lift him. At least she had noticed some non-winged horses on her way in with Duch. She was not the only one. The bay's kind words flooded her ears and she smiled. “It's lovely. I can only imagine how stunning the land is come warmer weather,” she cooed in response to his first statement. Who was he? Another of the warriors? His physique certainly screamed the part. “Thor,” he said and she instantly cursed herself. She should have known, especially after Duch spoke of him at the Threshold and again now. She heard bantering between them but could not be bothered to listen too closely. Hurriedly though fluidly extending her left front hoof, Kahlua curved her nose down past her knee and lowered her shoulders just slightly by moving her opposite hoof under her body. Holding the position for a moment she rose again and stepped back just once to give him more room. Submission. “I am Kahlua, my lord. My escort failed to mention how striking you are.” She practically oozed.
Thor... Thor the... Thor the Something. I can't remember. But does it matter? Titles or not, a king is a king. So king, tell me what you like. Do you like to see us grovel at your feet? I'll grovel with the best of them. Perhaps you like gifts and trinkets. I don't know where to find pretty pieces of the land yet, but I'll figure it out real quick if that is what it takes. Maybe there's a raging desire in your loins. I'll bear you all the foals you could dream of. We'll have a whole army if that's what it takes. You see, Duchanar is great and everything, but he won't take me where I need to go. He leads the life of a warrior- a life I was just not meant for. So don't be shy. Tell me what you need. I'll make your life better for it. I promise.
Duchanar's endorsement of the king was interesting to Kahlua, though she did not muse into it too much. There was something more between these two that, even if she was picking it up slightly, was very confusing to her. Just a few seconds passed as Kahlua prepared to speak again. Her voice was bright, betraying her excitement. Self secrecy was not on her list of talents like it was with Duch. “I ask humbly to join your home and family,” her pace was even enough but her thoughts raced rapidly in her brain. She was trying to think of how she could offer herself in a way that would make herself useful to the king. Suddenly an idea crossed her mind. She had noticed a mare wearing a necklace with a ruby stone while Duch was escorting her in. Within seconds she could see her future playing out. “Certainly someone in your herd must craft the pretty trinkets I see your loyal followers wearing. I'm sure I could be of assistance to the crafter... and through them, you.” She glanced quickly to Duchanar, just curious to see his reaction. Her gaze did not linger long. Within moments she was facing back to the king- eyes and ears devoted to him alone.

I am not surprised to find Dúchanar to be unfazed by my approach, but I am more than surprised to hear his adoration for me to be so… endearing. "I don't suppose you've grown soft since calling the Edge home have you?" I smile lazily at him for such kind words, though they have little effect on me after his deadly confession- I am still unwavering when it comes to the threat that he now poses to the World’s Edge. However, I don’t linger on him for long because suddenly I am lost in the song of this painted sylph, so delightful in appearance and intellect. For a time, I ponder her words and the imagery they evoke. Yes, the Edge is beautiful in the warmer months, so much so that I find myself pacing our borders daily only to glimpse every polished stone and listen to the slight roar of the waves in the background. I am entranced by the beauty here and I have no doubt that she too will find it worthwhile…

“Kahlua, a beautiful name for an equally beautiful creature. Though I daresay that Dúchanar may not have thought to share with you my threadbare appearance in favor of indulging you with the lore of Helovia? I’m quite certain that his fancy holds little concern for a brother in arms.” The chuckle that follows such sentiment resonates from within and no sooner than I can think to stop it, I choke out a hearty laugh. She uses flattery with such tact that I can hardly control myself while in her presence. Perhaps Duch has provided useful after all, if only after such shocking tales of horror shared beneath the intimate light of friendship and brotherhood. I turn to him with a forgiving smile and hope that he can see the bond that we share- I want him to remain beneath my figurative wing because I plan to bring him away from his past and plant him firmly in the present.

As the silence stretches on between us or perhaps the silence that now exists in my heart after so much confusion and loss, I am once again compelled by the lilting words of a blue-eyed nymph whose beauty far outreaches any of her company’s on this day. The way her soft voice caresses my senses makes me think of Tamira and my sweet little Essetia. My daughter had begun to grow and with each passing day her transformation took a toll on my heart. She looked so much like her mother that the pain behind each greeting and each gentle kiss was heart wrenching. Would the hurt ever subside or would I be left bereft without her love and devotion forever?

She had not left me so to speak, but her heart had gone away long ago.

You will call the Edge home and those within this wonderful place your family. Though, when you find the time, I think it would be most appealing for you to meet the DragonHeart, Queen and prior ruler of the Quian.” I know the Mirage will think highly of our new recruit, but I also know that with such grief riding heavy on her shoulders for now, my acceptance of Kahlua will have to suffice. I do not wish to trouble our Queen with the mundane, especially with the threat of hardship so near in our future and with the pain of death so fresh upon her heart. But I am drawn once again to the mellifluous song of the siren and this time, I am more than intrigued to find that she has already sought out purpose when many others would think to simply walk away and enjoy the rest and relaxation of the sea air after days of travel from the Threshold.

I am impressed.

I glance once more to Dúchanar in hopes that he will understand my gratitude for finding such an advantageous creature in the claiming grounds and bringing her here. He has once again proven me wrong in all manners of thinking by acting so loyally when his words are so often plagued by doubt. “You are quite compelling my dear and we do in fact have many crafters in our herd. I would be more than happy to introduce you to Lace or Aaron- the Glaziers of the Edge. They will be able to teach you how to make those trinkets you speak of, but we are also in the process of constructing a wall around the borders of the Edge to ensure our safety. If this if the path that interests you the most then we will waste no time in making introductions when you are ready. I will escort you myself.” I smile warmly at the mare, though I am slightly confused by her willingness to help me… Perhaps I am letting this title get to me; perhaps I imagined the slight tilt of her tongue over that last word. You.

Mares really did have a funny way of expressing themselves.

OOC| Got a message from Darq saying life was hectic and to go on without her :-)

Soft. The second time someone had used that word to describe Duchanar, her being the first. Repeating things doesn't always make them true but... well, Kahlua wasn't much of a philosopher. If it meant something, it was somewhat beyond her. Beautiful. The word struck a chord with her. It was always nice to be appreciated. A smile lit her face as he spoke. He laughed- she loved it. In fact, she loved it so much she couldn't help but flicking her tail up just so slightly in response. Life was good. Life would get better. Was it strange that she was so happy and so intent on gaining some sort of power? Why had no one bothered to tell her that shying from fights and being of average or less intelligence were not traits of a leader? She didn't know. She'd always been this way and no one had tried to teach her any different. In every way, she was her brother's opposite. He was strong, smart, not much of a looker and rather depressing in her mind. Had he grown up so different? Probably not. Strange, the way the world worked.

Home. The word was nice to hear. Too long she had been on her own. The life of a solitary wanderer was not for her. She needed others to flourish and shine. She needed others to protect her too. “I cannot wait to meet your partner. If she's as deserving of her title as you are, then I'm sure it will be a treat for me.” A brief smile flashed across her face. Not too much, she reminded herself. Flattery was good. Clearly the bay stallion was enjoying it. But too much of a good thing could be a bad thing. Did she have it down to a science? Not exactly, horses are so finicky and individual in their preferences, but she was always striving to perfect her art.

Lace or Aaron- the Glaziers. She repeated the names and title several times in her head. They would be important in her future, she was certain. She shifted her weight to the left and allowed him to finish his speech. It hurt her brain to philosophize too much; still, she couldn't help but be curious about the wall. A furrowed brow betrayed her confusion briefly before her normal, bright look returned. “A wall? I'm surprised such measures are required to ensure the safety of your.... our land.” She wasn't questioning his judgment. Certainly if he and the DragonHeart deemed it necessary than it was. In Helovia, she had simply found a country that was more war-minded than she was used to. “Still, what's good for the gander is good for the goose. If a wall is what the herd needs, then a wall is what I shall help build.” Her smile returned. She didn't yet understand the workings of this land but she could still work toward her own goal. A bat of the eyelashes. “Your company would be most welcome; I'm ready as you are, my lord.” She offered a quick glance to Duchanar- he was probably gald to be rid of her- before settling her gaze once more on the bay stallion.
Everyone thinks you have to be smart to be powerful. Maybe it helps sometimes. I'm not convinced it's always necessary. I'm pretty sure it's often who you know rather than what you know. And beyond that, I'm pretty sure that those 'whos' that you know should like you. I mean, really. Who is going to promote their worst enemy? So why not make your superiors feel special. After all, it only makes perfect sense.
