CIRCE
That morning in the Foothills was a stiff, quiet affair, the dark morning after a particularly heavy snowstorm; the blizzard had moved on hours ago, yet while the sky was clear and the stars above sparkled with cold brilliance, it was still an hour away from daybreak at least. As it was, the sun was nothing but a thin, hazy yellow line on the horizon, and there had been no moon that night. Even though the starlight proved to illuminate the skies with their guiding light, it was the gentle twinkle of two, three fireflies--so out of place in this season-- that proved to lighten the snowy ground, floating fae-like by the side of the warrior mare that trudged on this too-early morning.

With the combined might of the fireflies upon her back and the weight of exhaustion from getting up at this ungodly hour, Circe’s body was fairly numb to any sort of emotion she might feel. The depression that clung to her frame like a gloomy cloud still hung, but it was dampened somewhat by the fireflies’ soothing light; her body ached and protested, sore from her extracurricular duties and shivering with lingering sleep, and that was yet another distraction from whatever pain she might feel. The shadowmare yawned loudly, opening her maw as wide as it would go; she cast a glance for the northern horizon, her eyes alight with a not-so-shattering longing, an innocent sort of wondering, before turning her attention back to the task at hand.

Snow crunched underneath her hooves as Circe vaguely paced the same general area, shaking her barrel some and twitching her withers, tail lashing here and there periodically—these were her attempts to keep herself awake. Today was the beginning of her shift of heavy patrol around the borders; she was to be teamed with an unknown herdmate named “Hana”. Circe had never met the girl before; she had no frame of reference with which to anticipate the stranger. Was she a serious sort? Haughty? Flirtatious? Whatever came to be, Circe didn’t want to leave an impression as that yawning mule that lagged behind in her duties. No, she would do her job and do it well, and give her herdmates a reason to be glad in her presence.

Hana
I don't preach or scream ain't trying to teach the scene,
The only guidelines are those you need to read between.

Light footsteps, eyes downcast. Her mind was empty, no thoughts of any importance entered her mind, so she did not continue with most of the thoughts. It was her patrol, she would not allow herself to be distracted by the fact that she was possibly about to meet a sparring partner. The other mare, as far as Hana was aware, was not yet aware of Hana's punishment. If Hana was going to be entirely honest with herself, she was glad that the mare didn't know of her absence. This way their patrol would pass easily and Hana could ask her to spar.

As she glided over the frozen foothills, her hooves cold from the wet snow. Her ruby eyes where searching for the mare that was to be her partner. She did not know much about this mare, Hana wasn't even sure what the mare looked like. Assuming that the mare would be the only crazy one out in the open, like herself, Hana felt confident that she would be able to guess who Circe was. She spotted a figure in the far distance and a small smile lit up her face. With only a slight change in direction, the mixed platte doe wondered after the moving figure. Curious as to why light seemed to be shimmering around the mare, Hana sped up a little. Was it a god, that was lighting up the dark mare? As she drew closer wonderment lit up the younger mares face. Fireflies where hovering around her, lighting her up. "Circe?" asked Hana tentatively from behind.

She stopped moving, and offered the black mare a smile. "I'm Hana." She offered. Normally she would mutter further on about her being Lakota's younger sister, so others knew that if they hurt her, they would have to pay hell for it. But she did not do it this time, simply because she wanted to know what the mare thought of her as an individual.

[[ OOC: I'll edit this when I get back from my walk. I just wanted to get it up for you. <33 ]]

CIRCE
Hearing her name uttered, floating upon the thin, icy air of the too early morning, Circe turned and gazed upon a curious mare with kind, if somewhat trepidatious, ruby eyes. The shadowmere took several moments to study the new arrival, something stirring in her memory as she gazed into something familiar about grey swirls of patchwork that adorned her herd-mate; something nagged in the back of Circe’s head, insisting that she had seen this mare before, but couldn’t recall where. The cold and the exhaustion in the depth of her breast, however, numbed the work of her mind; there was no stroke of brilliance that came to the sorceress, and Circe finally decided to put the matter to rest. There was work to be doing.

Hearing the name of her comrade, Circe merely nodded, acknowledging her with a faint “Mmmh,” in the back of her throat; she then promptly turned, her pace brisk and purposeful, fully expecting Hana to follow in her wake to the borders of their land. It may have been somewhat rude to snub her patrol mate in such a fashion, but her limbs were aching with sleep, and Circe feared she may drift off into a doze at any second. With a lash of her tail, she attempted to bring greater focus to herself; a firefly landed on her ear, and she turned her focus on the gentle weight of it for brief moments.

Eventually, as the warmth of the firefly’s light engulfed her spirit, Circe felt the beginnings of guilt to spread from some tiny seed of doubt in her mind. It was not right to treat her herdmate like this; they were comrades in arms, were they not? Should they not at least attempt to foster some sort of alliance with each other? It was necessity that brought them together this morning, but should they not take the initiative and find some sort of companionship within each other’s hearts? With this thought in mind, Circe desperately cast for something to say and break the ice between her heart and Hana’s mild presence. “Do…do you have any family, Hana?” she attempted, her throaty voice seemingly melting into the pinprick of light just attempting to break through the darkness.
