Aaron
And shepherds we shall be, For Thee, my Lord, for Thee
Power hath descended forth from Thy hand
That our feet may swiftly carry out Thy command
So we shall flow a river forth to Thee
And teeming with souls shall it ever be
In nomine Patris et Filii et Spiritus Sancti

The bay and ivory yearling moved swiftly, his only light coming from the moon overhead. The night was still warm, but cooler than that of the extream days of Tallsun. His magic being of fire and light gave him some relief, but not by much. It did not take long to find where the brothers, his teachers had meant. "Whoa..." His eyes changed to show his saddness... Had the sun god done this? The colt respected the god for giving him his magic, but more and more he was turning against the god as he raged and acted like a child. Had those coming from Isilme not been through enough? Without another thought the colt shoved his shoulder against a burnt tree, beginning to help clear the burned so the new could take it's place.

the moon hung high in the clear night sky. pristine blue eyes occasionally peek upwards towards the moon, and a little cryptic smile tugged at the strange creatures parched lips. the bicolored dancer strolled along at his leisure, never in to much of a hurry. his rounded striped hooves sunk into the dried, crumbling earth, under his weight. there was little respite from the sun god's revenge; however, surely not all was lost. the goddess of the moon was obviously taking her sweet time to battle it out with the tallsun, but Moon Boy stood strong in his belief that she would yet conquer. the gods and goddess were much like the Egyptians Horus and Seth, so this surely could not last forever...could it?

in his aimless wanderings the equine had taken little notice of his surroundings. only as he pulled his thoughts together did he take the time to give the area a swooping glance. there was nothing really that seemed the need for his concern, an owl whooted in the distance, crickets chirped loudly in the surrounding dried and shriveled grass. He was amazed at how sturdy even the seemingly most fragile of creatures tended to be. all of these critters were surviving in the unquenching heat that was being bestowed upon them, by their ever gracious sun god.

As he casually continued on his way, the sound of something rubbing caused his ears to twitch. his black and white head rose to meet the direction of the sound. his bright eyes twinkling with mischief. he slinks off towards the sound, only to find a yearling rubbing away the dried decay. he stops and continues to watch the youngling work.

To be quite frank, these two intruders should praise themselves lucky that it was Aurelius who got to them first. Others might not be so tolerant, and they’d probably end up being hurled over the Edge. The dwarven steed had been nibbling on some parched grass in the untouched part of the land, covered in shadow as the trees blocked out the moonlight. It wasn’t much to brag about, the dry weeds brittle and turning to dust in your mouth, but it was food. Aury had shed some weight since his arrival, and he was in the best shape he had been for a few years; which was good, if only he hadn’t been so damn hungry. Losing interest in the yellow grass, he raised his head and looked out over the burnt area, sighing. As long as the sun was this harsh, nothing had the slightest chance of growing back, and Aurelius prayed that everything would go back to normal soon.

Standing there, his saddened expression suddenly turned into surprise, as he picked up on foreign scents in the air. Strangers in the Edge? Certainly no one would be so stupid, not at night, when all the habitants were out prowling. The imp shook his nape and set forward in a bouncy trot, following the smell to locate the intruders. The moon reflected off of his fluffy, silvery mane, the ram horns on his head looking rather grotesque at nighttime, eyes gleaming with curiosity under his thick forelock. Moving closer, he spotted a colt, and though only a yearling, he already towered well over Aurelius’ humble height. Whatever he was doing looked quite peculiar, causing Aury to flick his ears in suspicion. Why was he here, at this hour? Optics moved to the colt’s face, concluding that as an equine, knowing that he may not be very welcome in the land of an all-unicorn herd. The dwarf looked around, thankful to see that none of the other herdmembers seemed to approach, so he slowed to a relaxed walk.

Into view came also a stallion, bi-colored like the colt, and Aury wondered for a moment if they were related. He pushed the though aside as there seemed to be no interaction between them; it was merely a case of one curiously watching another. "Gentlemen! To what do we owe this dubious honor?" he spoke, voice cutting clear through the chill night air, authority in the words. Aurelius had seen no sign of Mauja, so he took it upon himself to represent the more diplomatic individuals that lived here. Some of the other gruff, scowling sourpusses did not have the same taste for politics. He halted, a bit closer than one of larger size might have, mismatched eyes looking at the others in turn. His eyes were not hostile, nor were they smiling; but they were somewhat demanding. If they knew what was best for them, they would answer and then follow his advice to get the hell out of there. Unfortunately for them, from their unsheltered position, it was likely that others would soon join them. Others who might not have the courtesy to ask questions first.

K O U
Softly she comes
Whispers the breeze with her passing
In secret love she is laughing

Moonlight guided Kou's steps as the mare wandered around the Edge's forest. Her hooves carried her to the burned part of the forest. The lack of rain and continuing oppressive heat kept any new life from growing quickly, though there were some sign that it was coming. She scuffed a silvery, cloven hoof across the ground and watched the cloud of ash that rose from the action. It seemed like forever ago that the forest was still pristine and beautiful, and it seemed like just yesterday that the Sun God burned it all in his fit of rage while they all stood helpless. What else could they have done? Any attack made on the god would have been met with death on their part.

The mare's ears twitched as a voice echoed among the burned trees. Her pale body turned and she began to walk in the direction it had come from and soon found Aurelius, Mauja's yes-man, and two equines. "Oh, but you're not supposed to be here." She said to them, accentuating it with a shake of her head. Her nostrils flared and she breathed in the scent of them. "You come from the Foothills." Kou said to the colt. "And from the look and smell of you I'd guess that your mother is that golden paint mare. The warrior. She was not so kind or civil to the Moon Doctor or myself when we went there to share our knowledge of healing." So why was he there? Did he expect to be welcomed with open arms into a land that was known as strictly unicorn?

Her pale gaze then flickered over to the painted stallion. "And where are you from? Do you call any land home or are you merely a vagabond?" Not wanting to seem too rude to her fellow herd mate, the mare then looked at Aurelius and smiled softly. "Hello, Aurelius. It is good to see you are doing well."

The Doctor mused around the ashen forest. It smelt of charred wood, branches hung limply from the trunks of trees. d'Artagnan sighed at the sight of it. He had been in invasions and was not unused to such appearances, but still it saddened the red greatly. Kou was nearby. He knew but did not make his presence known. She seemed to be wondering aimlessly and d'Artagnan watched her figure in the darkness from a distance. He had decided to go find her, to continue her training in healing and poison. But he found himself lingering within the sorry trees, still not knowing why he did this. There were no thoughts in his mind this time, just oblivious watching until she suddenly moved off with a keen intent. d'Artagnan frowned at the bare space his eyes blank for a few minutes before snapping out of his reverie and bolting off after her. Why can't she just sit still for one minute?!

The chugging of his hooves brought him closer to the little gathering which featured Kou and the little Aurelius with two equines. d'Artagnan wrinkled his nose in distaste and laid his ears back at Aaron. Wow, the bitch has a son. Poor kid. Still he was intrigued by the fact he seemed to be helping to clear up. d'Art inspected the other and smelt no herd on him. Vagabond. Answering the questions of Kou in his mind. The red barged in and marched past to stand slightly in front of his Nurse and Aurelius. "Boy! Put the stick down. Even if the two of you mean no harm this land belongs to the unicorns of King Mauja." He eyed them both for their attention. Aurelius was faithful to Mauja and d'Artagnan rather liked the little tyke, but he wanted a little more speed about business. " State the reasons for your presence. Then leave. Keep it short." His uniform manner showing all its colours on this night. The marred glass horns that sat upon his brow were barely visible in such lighting.

Long legs carried the lanky chestnut with ease over unfamiliar terrain. He was exploring again, stretching out of his solitary funk in order to see more of the lands. Trees surrounded him this evening, their branches occasionally dipping low enough to threaten to tangle in the barbed horn that sprouted from his forehead. So he carried his head low, allowing himself to fall into an ambling pace.

These lands were rich with the scent of other unicorns. But none familiar. It was a pity, really. On occasion he caught familiar scents on his wanderings, but they were always old. Too old to track. And changed by the turning of the seasons. But there were other things, more interesting things, on the air tonight. Two equine scents, fresh to any nose, overlay the unicorn ones that clearly lay claim to this land.

Lacking anything better to do than seek out drama, he diverted his path toward that of equine and charcoal. Lingered in the shadows for a while as he watched and listened. Debated what to do. Stay here, where the night's shadows deepened his liver coat to black and hid him away from star and moonlight, to observe this scene unroll before him... or play a part.

At last he decided with a lash of his tail against his haunches before approaching the little gathering with a jaunty gait. His head had lifted, and his green eyes were bright and alert. Deliberately he came to a halt off to one side and at a carefully calculated point between equines and unicorns. "You needn't be so rude." His tenor voice chimed out as he regarded the bay stallion who'd taken charge of the situation. "It doesn't look good on you. They're merely visitors, not enough in numbers to be a threat, much less old enough." He wrinkled his nose and snorted softly.

There was a vibrant twinkle in those emerald eyes as he studied the strangers each in turn. He was thoroughly enjoying himself. He had a brief thought to introduce himself and attempt to divert energies toward something else entirely, but decided to let things unfold from here.

((Random Ruka moment...))

I would rather be ashes than dust!
I would rather be a superb meteor,
every atom of me in magnificent glow,
than a sleepy and permanent planet.
– Jack London

Sometimes when he grew weary of biding time, waiting on someone else’s orders, Cineviam grew sullen and petulant. He didn’t like anything. If the night was cool, he wanted it warm; if it was warm, he wanted it cool. The fodder he found was too dry, but water was too refreshing. The breeze coming off the ocean was intolerably irritating against his skin, the crashing of waves like nails on the chalkboard to his ears. He didn’t want to stay in the territory, didn’t want to go out. He knew he should sleep in order to restore his energy and improve his mood, but he loathed the world of dreams as much as he despised the waking world.

It was too quiet – where was everyone?

When he heard voices, all he wanted was for them to hush and be quiet. His crabbiness had nearly escalated to quarrelsome. The coal brushed stallion approached the gathering crowd, dragging his legs like lifeless stumps across the ashen wasteland – his presence hung upon the air like bad karma. His eyes were the most disturbing in the moonlight. They were intensely red and made the stallions body seem like merely a disguise; as if something unspeakable peered out of a disintegrating costume at a world it coveted.

It did not take those unusually red eyes long to pinpoint the source of the night’s disturbance.

Two hornless had the misfortune of wandering into the Edge that night and Cineviam wondered if he didn’t just find two perfect targets to vent some of his anger. He arrived within earshot to hear D’artagan telling them to state their business, which was all well and good, but there was third outsider. A unicorn he recognized as the one he recently attempted to steal but had gotten no more than a glimpse and a whiff of before the liver chestnut eluded him. Curious, that he should be caught exploring Cineviam’s home now.

What Ruka had to add to the discussion obviously rubbed the perpetually shedding beast the wrong way. He had half a mind to pin his ears and bare his teeth —pressing authority upon the outcast in fair warning. Instead he puts a heel to the worst of his temper and shoves it back down, only stepping closer to join the conversation. “Normally I would agree with what you are saying… But, who are you to call the doctor and his nurse rude? “ he asked, voice thick with annoyance. D’artagan had the highest rank of those gathered; he could be as welcoming or rude as he pleased until Mauja showed up and purposely changed the overall mood. The herd members’ opinions should count but maybe the outsiders should only speak when spoken to.

Or risk goading his irascibility to blind rage.

It seemed like he had no sooner begun to help clear the dead trees away... That he was swarmed from all sides. The first, another equine seemed to look on curiously. However the pair was not alone for long as the first of several unicorns began to arrive. The first was short, but kinder than those who followed. Aaron was just about to speak when a mare approched as well. She was shortly followed by a chestnut stallion, a bay stallion, and a larger black and white stallion. The colt stopped, remembering his mentors's words. "But be careful," Madyrn warned with eyebrows arching high and voice rising with them. "The horny unicorns may not appreciate your... assistance. Be sly like a shadow." Maskan growled, "be confident like a flame" "Be ready to run." He stood up confidently, but not so tall as to act arrogant. Once all had made their requests the colt merely nodded to each in respect before speak. "I am Aaron, of the Foothills. Indeed I am the son of the mare you speak of. I can only apologize for my mother's actions, she has not been the same since we arrived in Helovia." He paused, looking to the two who had seemed at least civil before speaking again "I was sent here, to help clean the lands of the Goddess of the Moon, so that new life could be restored and the forest could begin to grow once again." The colt was tactful when he had to be, some might say wise beyond his one year. Well... you grow up fast when faced with running for your life and losing half of your family in the process.

However he did not follow one of the requests. The bay had asked him to state the reasoning of his presence and leave. Aaron instead placed his weight back on the dead tree he had been trying to remove and continued his work. If they wouldn't clean up after the childish God of the Sun... Well someone would just have to do it for them.

light blue eyes twinkle with sheer giddiness and entertainment. the bi colored lover looked upon the approaching faces of each individual as they surrounded and pressed themselves upon the two travelers. the corner of his parched lips twitched into a amused smile before being brushed away with a casual shake if his chiseled head. the first to catch his interest was the also the first to arrive. the rotund dwarf that is arguably the most welcoming of the parade. his brow creased together as he concentrated on each of their "greetings" and demands. he found is utterly hilarious that with each arrival they seemed to get meaner and more pompous.

they all seemed to swell and have to puff themselves up as if the presence of two lonely equine where going to do anymore damage then what was already done. many acted as if you plucked a tree by its roots and moved it across their imaginary border that is would just not grow the same once replanted. their lowly reactions were sad. where was the welcoming party, bringing one into your home an offering a traveler some respite from worldly woe. nay. this horde of unicorns see only the fact that they lack one thing, a horn. they forget the many things they all have in common two eyes, two nostrils, two ears, four feet, and a heart.

moon boy's perked lobes twitched as the colt finally spoke up, causing him to crain his head toward him. what he was doing was...amicable. with a simple flick of his black threaded tail he addressed each question that was barked at him. his attention was first placed upon Aurelius, who received a rare straight forward answer from the riddling poet. "I am simply passing through, wondering, or adventuring. You may pick from the list if you wish to label it." his voice was light and airy as he spoke to the small gnomish unicorn.

His expressive face turned to look upon the one called Kou. "courtesy is a turncoat. But it is certain I am loved of all ladies, only you excepted: and I would I could find in my heart that I had not a hard heart; for, truly, I love none. " his response to her abrasive questioning was both poetic and a riddle. as for d'Artagnan and the rest of their 'merry' band, including the one's he already answered to he had but this to say. "Sigh no more, ladies, sigh no more. Men were deceivers ever. One foot in sea and one on shore, to one thing constant never. Then sigh not so but let them go and be you blithe and bonny, converting all your sounds of woe into hey nonny nonny."

he stood there only a moment longer staring at them expectantly. did they all truly hold a harden cased with in their chest? if so it seems that history is once again doomed to express it's repetitive nature.

Just as he had predicted, more Edgers arrived. The wee stallion watched as the pale Kou arrived, always a pleasant sight, but less than pleasant to the likes of his two companions. As soft as she looked on the outside, just as fierce could she be under certain circumstances. The femme spoke first to the two others, like Aury had expected her to, so he just watched and listened. Kou and d’Artagnan had been in the Foothills? He hadn’t known and he was surprised to hear the welcome they had gotten. He believed the mare in question was Solstice, who had greeted him along with Mauja when he arrived to Helovia. The dwarf remembered her as nothing but pleasant, and he was usually a good judge of character, so he frowned in wonder. When Kou diverted her attention to him shortly, he returned her smile with a respectful nod and words of his own. "Kou. You look great, as always," he spoke, smiling. Oh yes, Aurelius knows his way around the ladies.

Next was d’Artagnan, never far behind the pale femme it seemed, and it made Aury chuckle amusedly to himself. There was something there that he’d want to look in to later. However, d’Arts facial expression didn’t leave much to laugh about, and as the red stallion interjected himself between them and the strangers, Aurelius felt almost touched. Only almost, for obviously d’Art wasn’t the talking kind, and he meant to take charge of the situation. Just then, yet another stranger appeared, a red unicorn who was indeed less out of place than the other strangers, but still an intruder. Something told Aurelius that the chestnut fellow had been watching all along, and when he chose to speak, Aurelius could’ve kicked him over the shin. It was obviously not a good idea to march into a strange land and dictate how people should behave, unicorn or non. And especially telling d’Artagnan something like that was just plain idiotic.

Their numbers increased as another Edger joined them. Aurelius didn’t know much about Cineviam, couldn’t remember having ever spoken to him, and the brute did not look to be in a cheerful mood. The words he spoke were harsh, aggressive, and Aury sighed on the inside. The situation wasn’t getting better; everything was more complicated with so many hostile individuals waiting to tear someone’s limbs off. The small steed admired the painted colt for his courage, though it would’ve probably been wiser to bolt in the other direction. Having yourself surrounded by so many hostile strangers wasn’t pleasant, Aurelius knew from experience. The yearling spoke and introduced himself as Aaron, and Aurelius immediately decided that he liked Aaron; he had guts. But of course the shaggy stag wouldn’t say it out loud. Moving around d’Artagnan, he made it clear that he would not be overruled like that. Just because he was small didn’t mean he would let others roll him over. "Your mission is a noble one, Young Aaron. But your timing is most unfortunate, I’m afraid. Stealing into someone’s home at nighttime is seldom a popular hobby," the dwarven steed spoke clearly, his voice friendly but insistent.

Then the bicolored steed spoke to him, eyes of green and black looking into light blue equals. "I understand you must be weary from your wanderings, but I’m afraid we cannot offer shelter to travelers. I would recommend the both of you to leave, before harm could become you," he speaks, not threatening but simply stating that even though he himself was friendly, he couldn’t hope to control the likes of his herdmembers. He must admit that the words the vagabond speaks to the other Edgers don’t make much sense, and yet it does. But it is concealed under a veil of riddle and song. Aurelius did suspect that his funny speech held way more meaning than they would know.
