Others had raced to face the invaders, confronting attackers with a vengeance. But one member of the herd chose a different tact. She knew that there was likely to be one or two to slip past the main defensive force, and decided that she would do something about the stealthy.
Poised upon the body of a fallen giant, victim of a past winter storm, stood the arguably most unusual member of the Edge. The moonlight seemed to glow on the silver-grey feathers and fur of the gryphon, illuminating her figure like a beacon in the darkness. Golden eyes scanned the shadows, watching for movement and expecting a stranger.
Though she stood on the highest point, there was plenty of space around her. The old tree had taken out many others when it fell, most of whom had fallen outward or long decayed away. In their wake they left a grassy clearing that was only beginning to be encroached upon by tendrils of underbrush, with the fallen tree spanning the width of the open space, neatly splitting it in two. Beyond it were trees of varying height, shorter toward where the tree's crown had hit, larger at its flanks. It was here that the gryphon waited, expectant.
