PURIFY

dark clouds will gather me

The great pillar cast light upon the barren sands and across the faded grass of the oasis. It was a good change, from the dismal darkness of the forest that had proved a challenge for the two brothers. For weeks - or so it seemed to be weeks, for the pair had no way of telling the time spent wandering the Threshold - they had been trapped in the endless labyrinth of foliage and wild trees, branched clawing at their bodies like gnarled hands, grasping and scratching at their tired withers. Mud and debris had clung to their exhausted legs and marred their wings, tainting their golden pelts. But now, the pair could relax. Now, they bathed in the tranquil yet icy cold waters of the oasis. With no sunlight to heat the water, even a desert oasis could quickly cause hypothermia, the smarter of the twins; Altair; was sure. He watched with mild amusement on the edge of the water, his pelt soaked from a quick dip, as Felix bathed.

The water was cold, yet welcoming. Throwing back his head - wet tendrils of white-gold hair slapping his back and his wings - he let out a loud whinny and stretched out his sodden wings, slapping the waters surface and sending rippling waves spreading out from the collision. It felt great to finally be able to relax in relative safety after their ordeal. It hurt to think back on their homeland, Cambria, yet they had been running for so long it felt like a dream of lives long passed.

Shivering, the older and somewhat happier of the pair waded to the edge, shaking his wings and pelt like a canine. Damn, it felt good to be clean - and alive! For a while, the twins had thought that unlikely. The unicorns from their former herd had wanted their bloodline to be cleansed - namely, via murder. Lots and lots of murder. Yet the threat was gone for the time being, and the duo let the fear fade from their minds. Rolling in the long, damp grass, Felix was the picture of tranquility, yet as he flopped to the side and spied his brother sitting beneath a palm tree, his eyes unable to remain open as he drifted into a stupor, he could not help but worry. Yes, Felix hid it well, but in the end, his brother needed him. He couldn't fight - not with his condition, so despite his apparent idiocy, he was ever vigilant, always watching.

He would die for his little brother.

Sighing, he sat up, shaking his head and snorting as his long forelock flopped over his left, brown eye. The remaining blue eye peered around curiously. He could see other horses - his new herd mates - not far away. He nickered toward him, hoping he might get to better know his new family, and let his haunting thoughts fully be banished from his mind.

The oasis. She had needed water, but finding this place had been a bit more difficult than she had expected. For some reason she seemed to have been walking in circles – constantly being drawn back to the warm fingers of the ever burning fire. She had yet to feel the warmth of the sun return to the lands, but she knew that the earth was slowly beginning to return to normal and that plants had started to grow a little.

But, as she stumbled across the oasis she realized that she was not alone anymore. There was a stag underneath a tree. He snorted, and then let out a small nicker to the other horses that were around the oasis and water section. She did not say anything, just returned the nicker, before heading into the pool of water to cool off her frame.

The familiarity of the water was calming. It was like her old lands in the northern sections- where water was abundant, if not a little cold, and you could see the mountains in the distance. But, of course, she couldn’t feel any mountains around. This was not her original home. But, this would be her new home. So, after having a nice drink she began to edge closer to the tree where he was resting. ”Hello,” she said quietly, little uncertain about approaching him. Perhaps he didn’t want to socialize. But, she was tired of feeling like she was completely alone.

So, she was going to try and fix that today…

PURIFY

dark clouds will gather me

A stranger nickered back and his ears pricked, lazy eyes scanning the perfect white body of the mare with a lopsided grin. She didn't seem to look over, instead moving toward the waters edge. He didn't bother her, instead settling to admire her physique from afar. She was shorter than himself, her frame dainty and pearl white. The only mark that flawed the otherwise pristine pelt was a bird shaped marking upon her flank. He almost didn't see it - its faint silver was masked under the cover of darkness and barely showed upon the equally colourless body. She smiled, glancing toward his twin, she seemed to have drifted to sleep a short distance away. No matter. Tess never had been interested in mares, or so it seemed. He had no interest in anyone, trapped as he was in his tiny world of just himself and his brother. It was hard, sometimes, being a twin. Other people came second best to their genetic clone.

Felix made time for others, unlike the younger sibling, though, so when the mare began to inch her way toward him, he nickered again kindly as she spoke meekly. She seemed somewhat nervous. He smiled up toward her face, but as his mismatched eyes met hers, his smile faded slightly.

Her eyes were light blue, which in itself was nothing unusual, yet they seemed glassed over. Her eyes did not seem to see him. It reminded him of Tess when he blacked out, forgetting his own identity, yet he assumed she was still in control of herself. The sheepish way she inched toward him brought the smile back, and he clambered to his feet. "Hello, he said quietly, lowering his head respectfully, though he suspected she did not see. Was she blind, or was he being presumptive? It was dark, maybe his eyes were being tricked by the low light? "I am Felix. I'm new around here. May I ask your name?" He asked, letting his eyes drift over her slender frame. She was beautiful. He couldn't not gawp.

The vibrations were easily running up her legs. Images being splayed across her vision as she inched closer and closer toward the winged stag who was curled up under a nearby tree. She shuffled her way forward as he let out a welcoming nicker. A smile upon his maw as he looked up toward her frame that was now lurking over his from a few feet away.

Creme eyes rested upon his frame before he started to clamber to his feet, words tumbling from his maw in a quiet way but respectful way. And, the way that he lowered his head also added to the manners that seemed to present themselves. He offered his name, and explained that he was new here. A gentle swish of her tail and she bobbed her head. "Pleasure to meet you, Felix. The name is Rasta."

She shuffled back a few steps, allowing her frame to get more comfortable at a normal distance now that he was standing. Her left hind cocked just a little as she put most of her weight on her right side, and her tail swishing away the flies that were starting to come around. Oh how she missed the water and the way that it lapped around her legs. The way that it soaked up the heat and kept most of the land at a mild temperature. She would need to get used to the heat. "How do you like it here?" she inquired, tilting her head ever so gently to the side and letting out a small breath, creme eyes toward his frame but never focusing on him.
