Wanderer's Rest - Aryel - 11-03-2012 A solitary mare champed grass at Helovia's border, pausing to paw through the snow to get at the wilted grass beneath. The cold season had only just begun, but there was a already a nip in the air and Aryel was grateful for her heavy winter coat. Her dark blue wings had orginally been half-unfurled to catch some of the sun's warmth, but were now pressed tight against her sides. Aryel had only been here a day, taking some time to rest after her trip from her home to Helovia. She had caught the faintest scents on the breeze of other equines, but had yet to see any. Aryel knew about horses and unicorns, although she had never seen any up-close. She had stayed away from herds before, and her home herd had been all pegasi. A gust of wind sent powder snow into her nostrils, and she snorted explosively to drive the tickling coldness out. The tall, stately pine trees blocked some of the wind, but replaced it with an eerie, shadowed quiet broken only by the occasional moan of stray gusts. She didn't like being in enclosed spaces very much. (If nobody meets Aryel, she stays for a while, then continues deeper into Helovia.) RE: Wanderer's Rest - NPC - 11-03-2012
RE: Wanderer's Rest - Aryel - 11-03-2012 Aryel looked up in surprise as a beautiful call caught her attention. "Hello, little cousin." she said to the bird, unconsciously using the term many members of her home herd had used to refer to birds. Seeming to be made of light itself, she watched as the bird spread it's wings and glided down to rest on her back. Head craned over her shoulder, she couldn't help but admire the creature. "What are you?" she wondered aloud. It certainly didn't look like any bird she had seen before. In response, the bird took flight again, perching on another branch with an expectant air. "Do you want me to follow you?" asked Aryel, tilting her head. She took a step forward, then stopped in one of her rare moments when she considered before she acted. What if it was a trap, and this bird was some sort of malign spirit? No, that was ridiculous. Besides, she was strong (for a horse not even fifteen hands) and fast. If there was danger, she would be ready. Adventure was beckoning! Aryel kicked up her heels and galloped to the bird's perch, following it. (Excitement :D) RE: Wanderer's Rest - Cassiopeia - 11-03-2012
RE: Wanderer's Rest - Aryel - 11-03-2012 Aryel watched as the bird flew up, the strange necklace clasped in it's beak. "Hey, wait up!" laughed the mare, turned and galloping again. Her wings unfurled, pumping the air. Taking flight was difficult in a forest, but she caught sight of a small clearing that would provided just enough space. She jumped in time with each downstroke, whinnying as her hooves finally left the ground. Aryel spiraled upwards in a wide circle, her legs still galloping as if she was running in the air. Her wide, powerful wings caught an updraft and she managed to draw level with the bird. She put on another burst of power, gliding around the avian and ending in a flapping hover in front of it. "Watch this!" she cried, folding her wings and diving, angling into a spin. Diving always gave her vertigo, though, so she angled into a climb before she went too far. No sense in impaling herself on the trees. RE: Wanderer's Rest - Cassiopeia - 11-03-2012
RE: Wanderer's Rest - Aryel - 11-03-2012 Aryel's ears flicked at the bird's song. She had never a birdcall like it before, it reminded her of the stories of the phoenix, the flaming bird with the most beautiful call in the world. This bird had to be a close second. She still couldn't tell what it was, but now that she had a closer look, it almost resembled a cloud of stars, a piece of the night sky. The bird had changed direction again, mimicking her dive and then swooping off towards an icy field. Aryel followed, her wings stirring snow flurries from the treetops. It was obvious the bird was leading her somewhere, the pace it was setting was slow enough so she wouldn't fall behind, but fast enough that she had to keep moving. As far as she could tell, they were heading southwest. "Where are we going?" Aryel asked the bird, not expecting an answer. It could sing beautifully, but so far, it didn't talk. Her eyes were drawn to the chain in it's beak again. The bird was practically dangling it in front of her. Aryel snorted, her wings picking up speed as she slowly began gaining ground on the bird. RE: Wanderer's Rest - Aryel - 11-03-2012 Aryel noticed the meadow in the distance, and wondered how far they were going. She was hardly tired, though. Just like when they were running, pegasi could fly for a long time. She increased her speed again, trying to overtake the bird. The cold air whooshed by, chilling the mare and filling her with excitement. There was something in the cold air and the bright sky and just flying fast that set her blood pumping. She tossed her head as she trailed the bird, throughly enjoying herself. She watched as the bird flew up, completing a slow rotation before dropping back down. She wasn't sure she could do the same, though. Somehow, she couldn't visualize herself flipping over like that. Still, it was worth a try. Tilting her wings, she gained altitude and slowly rolled, spreading her wings as far as they would go for balance. She wobbled a little as she completed the spin and righted herself, but she had copied the bird's trick. "You're not getting away just yet." she taunted it, increasing her speed yet again. RE: Wanderer's Rest - Aryel - 11-03-2012 Aryel gasped as the bird momentarily lost it's grip on the amulet, then breathed a sigh of relief as it caught it again. That was close, she thought. She wasn't quite sure about the amulet's significance, but she had a suspicion that beautiful birds that looked like the night sky didn't just up to everyone carrying mysterious necklaces. She noticed the trees were now behind them, and stretching in front of them was a large snowy expanse dotted with the occasional patch of tall grass peeking through the snow. Clouds had gathered into a thick blanket overhead, making the whole area look somewhat desolate. Silence lay like a blanket over the meadow. She slowed as the bird did, flaring out her wings to come to a hovering stop. "That was fun." she giggled, the invigorating cold and the flight making her feel almost like a foal again. The four-year-old didn't often get a chance to frolic and goof off, especially back home. She watched the bird go into a landing, swooping down to alight gracefully in the meadow. Aryel's landing was somewhat less elegant, she tilted into a downwards spiral and hit the ground at a gallop, sending up a wave of powder snow that mixed with the flakes beginning to fall. She trotted to a stop, nostrils sending up clouds of steam as she regarded the bird curiously. "Okay," she said, lowering her head to get a better look at it. "You brought me here. Now what?" RE: Wanderer's Rest - Aryel - 11-04-2012 Aryel watched as the bird dropped the necklace at her hooves. "It's beautiful." she said, entranced by it's gentle purple glow. A flutter of wings alerted her that the bird was leaving again. And this time, she could tell, it didn't intend for her to follow. "Wait!" She called up to it as it disappeared. Don't go! Who are you?" What are you? And then she was alone again. With a sigh, she looked down at the amulet again. It was a gift, and it certainly was pretty. She nudged her nose under it, then lifted her head and let the chain slide down her neck to rest at her shoulders. She felt...what? Protected? She had never experienced ward magic before and didn't recognize it now, she just knew that the necklace gave her a feeling of security. She snorted, and chalked it up to just have an active imagination. The snow had begun to fall in earnest down, and the temperature had dropped. Chilled, Aryel began heading southwest to look for shelter. |
