ULRIK
"I hate the cold."

Ulrik could still remember the panic he felt when he had seen Illynx, his leader, round. He had blinked. He had nothing to say. The stallion had been furious with Psyche for getting pregnant as a leader, and he had to admit that he was not exactly pleased with Illynx either. She was a leader, and she should know better. But, this time, he couldn't stand to the side and judge, because he should have known better too. Never before had he made such a grave error, such a hazy-minded mistake.

He was resolute not to be so foolish again, but he had to live with this one. The Engineer was not a father. He would never be a good parent. While he did like children well enough, he always handed them back off to their parents so that he could go back to work. Now? The stallion groaned, inwardly imagining the few years of hell he had to look forward to.

Certainly it couldn't be that bad. Illynx was not a lax leader, and he hoped that she would be as stern with the kid. He would not have a weak child, and he would not have his glorious, pure bloodline tarnished by some ineffectual, wimpy brat. If it was born defective, un-fixable, he would kill it - no questions asked. There was no room in this world for the defective, and he would not raise one.

Ulrik's mad, bronze eyes caught Illynx's movement outside that cave, and he approached, the moonlight catching on the blackness of his coat. He waited outside as she pushed the parasite out of her guts and then stepped in a few moment's later, expression stern and unforgiving. If she tried to save a broken child, he would have to fight her as well, so his body was tense, muscles ready to execute a killing blow if necessary.

It probably said something about his self esteem that he was so sure he would father a defective kid. He ignored that errant thought. Fortunately for both of them, the kid stood rather quickly, and he watched with a guarded expression from the shadows of the cave, not approaching too soon. Honestly, he was considering running for the hills, but Torleik would just drag his ass back. What were cousins for?

She called to the boy she had named Rikyn, and he blinked, tilting his head as he considered it. A good name. Fitting, he thought. The name was not so brutal as his, but not so slippery as hers. And, he had a boy. Fuck. What was he supposed to do with a boy? Raise it? Did she expect him to raise it too? Ulrik wanted to introduce himself, but the little maggot probably didn't understand a word. He would sound like an idiot speaking to the kid in some sort of dumbed down common tongue.

"He will be great." He said instead, deep voice rumbling off of the walls. Ulrik stayed there though, with her and the kid, like a responsible stallion. He was anything but, but he might as well put in the effort.
