ARELI
Do you still believe in love, I wonder?

Areli couldn’t sleep. She did not know why she was restless, but ever since she had bedded down with Mama earlier, she had not been able to slip into slumber with her usual ease. Perhaps it was the full moon, or perhaps a touch of spring fever, but an hour ago she had risen from her fitful doze and strolled into the moonlight.

At first, she had only intended to get a drink, but she had found herself wandering along the edge of the river and into the wood. With the moon bright above her and Bee at her side, she was not afraid. She knew many of the deer paths in the Falls, and she was close to one of her favorites. The trees were so widely spread apart here that it was rather faint, but she followed alongside its meandering trail like a little firefly, dapples glowing golden in the dark.

It wasn’t long before she had come to the part of the forest she now knew as the Threshold. This also was becoming a familiar place; ever since she and Bee had discovered the angel-mare here, they had returned often to poke around. Comfortable in her old haunt, the sandy wolf pup broke from her mistress’ heels to stalk small animals in the brush—Areli could hear her hunting ahead, trying her luck unsuccessfully with the occasional vole or drowsy rabbit. She was still getting used to the way Bee’s emotions tended to crowd her mind. Every time the wolf scented a potential quarry, Areli’s adrenaline would spike, and she was still learning to anticipate the rapid-fire sensory bursts that Bee was prone to transmitting.

Thus, she almost ignored the pup’s discovery of the girl in the bushes. Assuming that it was another unlucky rabbit, Areli pushed aside the surge of excitement and the wave of curiosity. It was only when Bee came trotting back to her, then ran ahead again, that the dark filly took notice. Had the young wolf found something? Hoping that it wasn’t another dead skunk (it had happened once), Areli held her breath and followed her companion.

Ears pointed forward sharply, Bee wove through the forest, only slowing when a large bush came into view. Looking back at Areli, she whined softly, and as her mistress peered into the shadows, she was rather surprised to find a girl very much like herself asleep beneath its branches. “Hey,” she called quietly, wondering what the filly could be doing out here so late without her mama.
