Love. Love with a catch.

Apparently that was the normal now. As much as his heart rose to hear the word love, the ending sent him tumbling back into a black abyss of fear. It just continued to break as she trembled. She was afraid. What had she possibly done that she was scared to tell him? Cerin thought himself a pretty lenient guy, he held understanding for nearly everything.

But he realized why she was so afraid. As the confession slipped out of her mouth, she tumbled to the ground, and Cerin used all of his energy to remain calm and stoic. Inside though, he was sobbing. His body burned with jealousy and anger. The anger directed towards himself for leaving her. Now she had found someone.

He couldn’t blame her. She was grown up. He couldn’t have expected her to wait for him. Cerin was an absolute disaster inside, and now he felt worse by making her feel guilty. Even as she tried to explain that it meant nothing, he didn’t believe that. Myrrine was far too tender and loving to have had a relationship that meant nothing. If she fell in love with him while he was away, he didn’t want to come between it.

After a few moments of agonizing silence, he knelt down next to her, gently putting his head over her withers to tuck him beneath his chin. Words would be useful now. But of course, he had no way of conveying it. He would have to show her. Gently he pulled on her mane to grab her full attention.

He simply had a scene of him nudging her towards another. He didn’t have an image of this boy, so he just used a copy of a stallion he had come across in his travels. Cerin took a step back then, motioning her to continue her relationship. The scene wavered as he kept his sadness from leaking in, but he was able to hold control for a few more moments before it collapsed around him.

The full weight of his head fell upon her withers and he stared blankly at the land in front of him. His mind wandered towards what his future meant now. Cerin was determined not to abandon her, and he would be here in case she needed him. Sure, his heart would break every time he saw her with this mystery man, but he would keep his game face on.

But oh how his heart hurt.
