TANDAVI & NATRAJ</style>
we walked a lonely road
beneath the fire of a thousand suns

Hurt feelings and confused ideals; this is all the world has become, an amalgamated mess stemming from misplaced thoughts and hateful words. War and anger tear rifts in the machine, breaking apart the smooth relations of a child and her friend and forcing tension, taut and trembling, to arc between them. But of course the girl does not know this, and she can only look and wonder and not understand as Kali's anger fills the air. The gryphon bristles at Sacre's words, clutching fiercely despite Natraj's nip; she is not placated, for not one bit, and the mention of Rishima only heightens her rage. She remembers this boy for his harsh, cruel words in the face of her bonded, remembers his anger and little else. Kali is a simple thing, unimpressed with the ill-mannered child; she emits an avian grumble along the lines of yeah, right, and continues to glare through slitted eyes, her gaze followed by Tandavi and an anxious Natraj.

The girl, meanwhile, starts at her mother's name- how does Sacre know the moonlit mare who gave her life and lurks beneath the trees? She does not know of the Edge's play at pied piper, or that her mother kept Sacre close so long. Perhaps it is her own blindness to the world around her, or perhaps Rishima consciously kept the children apart, to save her daughter from the sins of the aged. Regardless of how, Tandavi is ignorant, and in the void of her ignorance flows confusion and rage. She demands an answer, and the boy gives it, and all at once the emotions change.

Disbelief. Bemusement. Indignation. "Mother wouldn't keep a captive." Her quick defense is completely invalidated; in truth, Tandavi has very little idea of what her mother will or will not do. But Mother is supreme in the girl's dark gaze, for such is the power of youth and blood bonds, and Mother is good and Mother is kind. But Sacre does not sound like he lies, and as the girl glances at her brother he looks lost as she feels, and Kali's guilty gaze is a silent confession. Confused, at a loss, the girl turns to Lace: why? her eyes demand. I don't understand!

The boy inches forward and the girl whirls around, and the coupling of pain and confusion makes her dizzy, light headed. She stumbles, she gasps, and she drops to her knees, the world a blur of hot air and color. Fire crackles sinful on the arc of her spine, collecting and rising, a small sun forming in a mimicry of Lace. It is the size of a grape, a hesitant thing, but volatile, insecure, a threat in the space that separates them all, improbable wrath and youthful disdain, the loss of control rising and growing and her and her mind all that hold it back. Kali coos pleadingly, looking at Tandavi and back to Lace; Natraj's gaze shifts between Sacre and sister; and both wonder what she'll do, and in that moment even she does not know.
