Ulrik the Engineer

Ulrik's curiosity turned into irritated confusion as he mentioned some baby bird. Were they rescuers of the crippled now? Not like he could exactly talk, given that Kirchoff had been more or less taken by that strange riddle-giving thing. The engineer had no idea what it was, and he also did not have any desire to truly find out. What hid under those robes had to be something hideous or mind-shattering. The stallion paused, thinking for a moment as his freshly clean beard caught the warmer winds.

The process of thinking through the design, the plans, was the most difficult. Ulrik had to imagine a mechanical bowl shape that would open and close like an aperture and then how to efficiently and perfectly use those pieces to transform into some sort of toy. At least the toy did not have to be complex like the multiple joints and hydraulic pistons of his hefty mechanical wolf. In all honesty, this project would be rather small and simple. It was geometry with engineering, not electronics for the most part. Fitting in the stones would be weird though - he had never made settings before.

"Yeah, I can do that," he muttered absently, looking at his pile of metal and realizing that it was much too little. Ulrik went over to his metal wolf, which was damaged anyway, and stomped his cloven hoof onto the tail, snapping it off at the hip. Now, he had enough to work with. The stallion closed his eyes and the pieces of metal began to float as if a magnet was pulsing above them, and then, everything began to take shape faster than the eye could process.

A bronze light of heat and the expulsion of energy radiated from the creation for a moment until it dropped to the ground with a dull thud. The creation was like a weird shaped bowl as a nest, the pieces of metal overlapping so that they would slide to expand and contract, but a weird button protruded from one side. Ulrik popped it with his hoof and a whirring noise of spinning gears filled the silence. Suddenly, it was manipulated into a the shape of a very primitive bird with flapping wings and snapped and popped up and down. Then, the flapping slowly came to a stop as the mechanical wind-up device spun down. Ulrik pressed the button again and it went back into the shape of the bowl.

"I am not sure how long the creature will fit inside of the nest part, but it should last at least a few months, I would imagine," he grunted, looking down. "Pressing the button activates the winding gear to make the toy's wings flap." Ulrik looked up at Torleik. "Done?"
