Roland has decided that the Basin is much more appealing in summer; even more so now that the sun has risen. Months have passed and yet he still wakes with a start, looking for the first rays of pink light slanting over the mountains, some form of reassurance that it hasn't slipped away from him once again. After the recent fiasco, he is not so trusting of the Gods. But at least he has found his optimism once again, which must have drowned in the darkness long ago, only to be revived when the sun returned. In many ways he has found happiness in the new year, but there are still some things missing.

Sunrise, he has found, is one thing he missed the most during the Endless Night. He is not always an early riser, but something, perhaps sentiment or restlessness, chased him from his cave and out onto the Frostbreath Steppe in time to catch the dawn. It does not disappoint.

He blinks the glare of the sun from his eyes and tilts his cheek into the watery light, bathing his coat in brilliant gold and allowing the tension to flow from his muscles like water. He sighs, looking out across the flat expanse of land and its jagged rise and fall as it makes its way towards the sea. The smell of salt is strong in the air, even from such a distance. Roland wrinkles his nose at the sharp scent, picking his way carefully across the ground. Where snow and ice once sprawled there now stood short, pale blades of grass, shivering in the warm breeze.

As far as the eye can see, the world is silent and unmoving. The stillness is peaceful, yet slightly unsettling, and Roland finds himself wishing for something to settle his gaze upon besides purple wildflowers or thin cotton clouds. He looks down at the grass and dirt beneath his feet, and then steps forwards. The cliff's edge slowly draws towards him like a gigantic mouth, opening up to reveal a thrashing sea of twilit blues and foamy white. The Impersonator looks down upon it warily, as if the ground underfoot might suddenly give way and send him plummeting into the violent waters. The sound of waves fills his ears with a dull roar, vibrating right to his very core in a soothing sort of way, yet he is still unsettled by the way the trench yawns threateningly before him. He chuckles to himself, as if this cowardice that is as much a part of him as any other trait has grown to be more humorous than exasperating.

A salty wind blows the stallion's forelock across his eyes as he draws away from the edge, turning back to look across the flat and empty steppe. Loneliness, he decides, is the same colour as the orange glow from the sun.
