He walks up because it is cooler, and follows paths he sometimes can't see because of the way they meander in and out of the fog. He walks up because he thinks it is what Kostya would do. Relying on his feet, on his ears, on most anything but his eyes, gives him time to think – and he thinks of what he usually does; a dark stallion with a single star, and his brother like a shadow at his side. Too much time had passed since he'd strayed from their side. Kostya had probably found himself another queen by now; the red stallion smiles at the thought.
He thinks of running reckless down slopes hazardous from scree, the stars blazing a trail above them, bright enough to follow if they could.
It is daylight, though, and the fog is thinning and the sky is summer-clear, and so he pushes the memory away and takes his first look at his surroundings.
Gabriel doesn't believe in gods – not in the sense that they are to be worshiped, to be respected. He has seen them destroy a world, has seen them kill one another, and he feels little but distaste and disinterest for them and their worshipers. But standing here, the fog below and the blazing sky above, the mountains ringing him like a cathedral, he can see why there are believers and zealots.
It is why, when he hears the sound of hooves behind him, he turns with a sort of solemn interest. Anything could happen up here, his mind tells him – but what stands before him is a young unicorn mare, body dark as shadow and points light as fog, and he faces her for a moment that stretches on and on, saying nothing.
