There is something behind the throne
Quilyan
greater than the king himself.

He doesn't like this feeling of... inadequacy, of failure. Oh, how he longs to return to their homeland, to retake the throne that is rightfully his, to be the king that she sees in him - but he can't. What she fails to understand is that in order for a monarchy to be successful, it must have a firm, well-built base, and Th'orqui no longer has that. Can she blame him for running, when he had thought they were all dead? Was he wrong to flee, unable to bring himself to look for their familiar faces among the dead? She refuses to believe him, though she offers hushed condolences and insistent, patronizing bravery. Can't she see that if he could go back, if he could return Th'orqui to its former glory, he would?
But then the faces flash before his eyes - Resplendence, and Kaj, and Kahlua, and Mirage, and all of the others that he had sworn to protect. Is his role here any less important? He leans into his little sister's embrace, allowing her to attempt to calm him (as though he is the one that needs it!). Oh, Reeni... How he longs to tell her, to insist that he is in the right, that there is nothing to go back to... but he knows it will do him no good, just as he knows that Nasreen will not strike out on her own so soon after finding him again. And when she tells him that it will be okay, he wants to say that he knows, because he's been okay, he's come to terms with his losses and moved on, found someone to love, found a family to serve... but in the end it is only silence that falls from his lips. Instead, he stretches to massage along her withers, hoping that she will come to see Helovia as he does - as home. |
