déodat,

A pang of hunger rumbled in his stomach. Déodat’s frown grew even more upon his features and he snorted as he made a mental note to do search for food when he arrived back at the entrance to the Basin. For now he would finish his patrol of the pass. Then the search for food would begin. Even thinking about it made his stomach growl again. As much as he would like to speed up his pace and get back to the Basin as fast as possible, he knew better than that. There would be nothing efficient of a rushed patrol, so, he walked and used every one of his senses as he moved. Nothing would escape from his notice, at least that’s what he assumed. For the moment it seemed as though there wasn’t anything threatening his herd, so he made the choice to finally head back and satisfy some of his hunger.

How long he had been out and about, he wasn’t sure. All that he did know within that moment was the sweet taste of grass on his tongue. It had taken some digging, but his venture had ended up successful in the end. The hunger subsided and he drank his fill not too long ago. Now was time to relax before he would go off and find yet another task to do. That was perhaps how he kept his mind from wandering to dark places that should remain locked. Memories of home and the General were things he had no desire to bring up. Since his return to Helovia, life had been decent, with the exception of the evil being summoned. It seemed as though this mystical land could never go without being draped in some form of shadow. The endless night might see like a mercy in comparison to what was being birthed in the south.
A sigh passed from his lips and he shook his head. Life never seemed to be easy for the Blood Prince. There was always some kind of twist that triggered drastic change and tossed any and all hope for even a blip of normalcy to occur in his life. There was the tiniest sliver of him that craved something more from his life than just war and bloodshed. All of his family seemed to be gone, he hadn’t even seen his cousin since returning to Helovia. Knowledge of what the Edge had done to his cousin’s children still made his stomach churn with rage. At least they were safe and back home. What had befallen the children’s father, remained unknown and he planned at a later date to seek out his cousin. For now, he would simply find a place to rest for a brief while before thrusting himself back into work.

For a split second he contemplated going back to the cave that he had claimed, but decided against it as he wasn’t in the mood to make the trek. Plus their was something rather isolating about that place, and he found himself not quite in the mood for complete solitude. Yet, it was still early morning as he had woken up near dawn to begin his patrol around the Basin’s borders. Nonetheless, he remained and decided to busy himself by digging for more grass beneath the coat of snow.
