Please, I'd like to speak to someone. The girl would have been better off saying nothing. Yes, her voice was heard. By a horse of the Edge, even. A mare who was nothing but a ghost of her former self. No hint of her prior beauty was left, no spring in her step, no dance in her voice. The mare was nothing but a Kahlua-shaped shell left to wander the earth, pupil-less blue eyes scanning the misty forest with little recognition of what it had been to her before.

She had been bitten, attacked, by a hybrid monster and in her stupidity she had stood there and screamed. But perhaps it was for the better, something in her mind told her. Maybe she was better this way, as one with the darkness. A cruel laugh so unlike the one normally graced her lips fell into the air. Her symptoms had come on slowly at first, just the bite and the kick to remind her of the mistake she had made. But then, all at once, she was more than herself, a monster, her tail transformed, her bruised ribs moving to the outside of her body, growing pincers above her mouth. Yes, she was a monster through and through. There was no denying it.

So the mare did not deny it. Instead, she gave in to the primal call that raised up within her. Find the girl that had wanted to speak to someone, make her wish she hadn't. The painted monster began to trot, the only announcement of her arrival the death of the foliage around her. Resplendence would kill her. But who was Resplendence to Kahlua? Nothing but a wisp of a memory, a distant past that only existed in her mind.

And then she was upon the mare, a pretty thing, but Kahlua had been pretty once too. She cared no longer for beauty. “Well speak, then,” she demanded, but her voice was hollow and without any pause between words and actions, she lunged, pincers reaching out to grab the flesh of the mare who stood before her. Anywhere would be fine, though Kahlua had aimed for her neck.

Settled on her forelock, the scorpion that Ulrik had gifted her watched the events with lifeless eyes. In life, Kahlua would have set the thing down from time to time. In death, he was her permanent companion.
