The Aurora Basin was being poisoned. Every glance at the darkness spilling over the mountain tops made Roland all the more eager to escape, shivering with anticipation and barely concealed dismay. It seemed mere moments ago that he had stumbled across the wraiths, eyes sunken and flesh hanging loosely from their bones. The smell of sickness was on the wind, lingering as if disease and disorder had been injected into the arteries of the valley itself.

He came across the departing group not a moment too soon, still fighting to catch his breath and casting wary glances over his shoulder with every hurried step. His heart was pounding wildly in his chest, fluttering persistently against his ribs like a frightened bird. Any effort to compose himself was in vain, legs trembling and wide gaze falling upon the faces of his herd mates. Some he recognized, some he didn’t, but he only hoped that those who were not present were already safe.

And with his usual cowardice in tact, he would not protest Deimos’ decision to leave, nor pause to cast wistful glances back at the looming, shadowed mountains or the caves carved out of rock. He would leave willingly, somewhat frantically perhaps, following the Reaper and the Basin’s denizens from the frozen halls and frigid, windswept plains of their home.
