Lakota
The Poisoner

For a split second, Lakota hopes that Ktulu won't do it.

A half-heartbeat later, she knows there is only one way to stop it.

Aodaun is screeching in her head, a violent mantra of no that she blocks out. She has made her decision. The words are barely from her lips when she sees the dip of Ktulu's crown, the light above glinting off the weapon of her horn. Ao is willing to let this be his end, she can feel it. But there is a split second of frenzy, a despair that nearly sends her to her knees as she imagines life without her bonded. It is a life she will not live through. She would sooner die and follow him into the afterlife than ever live without him. Lithe form is quick like a viper, hooves leaving earth in a violent shove, and she knows instinctively that the landing itself is going to be hell. Her and Aodaun are the ones to collide first as she slams him out of the way, and his emotional agony kills her. But she would rather the both of them to live, even if the horn prepared to stab her may mean her death.

Whatever God is watching over her, for surely Laima would never care for the defected princess, seems to find this honorable somehow. It's idiotic, really, seeing as Aodaun would likely die if Lakota did, but she is moved only by love and a desire to keep him safe. But somehow, the blow is misdirected as she comes between them, slicing up her left side and over her spine before finally snagging and ripping free. Agony explodes through her, and she crumples there on the dirt, unable to remain standing. Aodaun roars, a sound she's never heard from him, but everything is grey and she's having trouble focusing through the pain. The wound is deep and wide, far wider than the tip of Ktulu's horn, for every horn widens as it nears the base. It is unlike anything she has ever felt before, and she briefly wants to sob or pass out. But she watches through blurred vision as Ktulu turns and runs, and she knows she can't leave Ao to pursue the Constrictor alone.

How she gets up she doesn't know, but she's moving as quickly as she can, blood oozing thick and hot down her body to leave a dangerously obvious trail as she moves through the caverns. Aodaun is only a few paces ahead, chasing after Ktulu only to slow and hang back, repeating it over and over again, knowing he could not take her down alone. Together they enter the cave, and Lakota doesn't slow, even if the simple movement of shoulders and hindquarters makes her want to scream. Magic pricks at the nape of her neck, and she only gets half a breath before it takes hold. Her eyes roll and she sways, but Aodaun is letting his voice free, ivory teeth deadly as he roars, massive black-padded paws slamming the earth below as he charges.

For the first time, Aodaun uses his magic, knowing well where that horn is aimed this time.

He envisions Ranjiri split open, entrails splattered around her body, with Eytan slumped and broken beside her. Beside Ranjiri is Hototo, limbs broken and removed, blood covering his frame in thick smears. With it he sends the force of everything he can spare, wanting to inspire in her the terror she deserved for injuring Lakota so mortally. As he does this Lakota is moving forward, keeping her attention even as she chokes and convulses, and together they hunch down and lunge for each shoulder, intending to shove her backwards into the healing waters.
