“H-hello?” she calls out softly. She is faintly surprised when the echo takes a few moments to fly back to her straining ears. The room, though dark, must be massive. But anything could be down here, she realizes, and the thought makes her back a few involuntary steps. If there is anyone here who wishes to harm her, there isn’t much that she can do. That is a paralyzing thought. She needs to get out of here.
If she can find the wall, she reasons, she can follow it back into the main part of the cave. She doesn’t know if the way she’d facing will lead her deeper into the darkness or back into the faint light, but panic is beginning to clench its meaty fist around her fluttering heart. Just find the wall, Nasreen tells herself, before fear immobilizes her completely. Sucking in a shaky breath of metallic cave air, she unfurls her wings, hoping to brush rock with her feathers. There is nothing.
She begins to sidestep right, hoping that if she continues to move in one direction, she’ll hit something eventually. She had never been much afraid of the dark, but this pit is giving her second thoughts…
