It is already cold, and you have foolishly wandered north. You have not come here in vain, though. Beauty draws you in, like a moth to a flame, and you pause at the edge of the tundra to take in the dazzling sight. Ice arches shine in the sun, reflecting light so bright that it hurts your eyes to stare. Fascinated, you set off at a steady trot through the deep snow, moving closer to the natural frozen sculptures.
With the inconvenient drifts, it takes nearly half a morning’s journey to reach the first arch, but oh, is it worth it. You peer into the blue mirror just inside the mouth of the arch, where the light isn’t as strong and the shade allows reflections. Beautiful as always Sheba, though perhaps a little fuzzy from the season, you think. You preen, trying different angles—lowering your head and looking up at your reflection through thick eyelashes, turning and gazing appreciatively over your shoulder…perfect from every vantage point. Vain you may be, but your conceit is not entirely unfounded. Your spotless white coat blends in with the snow, and the blue tint from the arches makes it look as if you had been cut from the ice yourself.
You continue onwards towards the clusters of arches, dancing through the entryways. Your reflection dances along beside you as you kick up snow, and a delighted laugh slips from your lips, echoing loudly in the silence. Startled, you look around. The place seems to be abandoned, you realize, and for good reason too—it’s cold out here! Your solitude is liberating, though. You laugh freely, and your movements become wilder; no one is watching. Breathlessly, you spin under the arches, humming a melody magnified by the funnel-like ice. You’re putting on quite the show, something you surely would have never done if you had known that someone was watching.
