You are in mid-pirouette when a dark blur catches the corner of your eye. Startled, you nearly lose your balance, catching yourself just in time. As it is, your front hooves land heavily in the snow and you scrabble momentarily before you are able to whirl around and face your observer. You are both unnerved and angry that she has caught you in such a position—you pride yourself on your stealth, and you are finding it rather distasteful that this stranger has pulled your own trick on you.

“I hope you enjoyed the show,” you say coolly, approaching the dark mare to get a good look at her. Like yours, a horn bursts proudly from her forehead, but the stranger is much darker. Swirls of gold dust her bay coat, and all four legs seem to have been dipped in the same color. Unusual, you note, but you have seen stranger things since arriving here. “As you can tell, I was unaware that there was anyone else out here,” you continue, once you have drawn within a few paces of your mysterious onlooker.

You tilt your head slightly, wondering what she’s doing out in this godforsaken place anyway. She’s the first creature you’ve come across all day; you saw no signs of life on the tundra as you were trekking over to these most spectacular mirrors. How could she have come out of nowhere? If your eyes hadn’t been locked on hers, the thought would have warranted a glance around the icy caves, searching for any other unexpected company. But, you will not let this silent stranger get off so easily. “You are?” you question lightly, addressing the unicorn.
