ULRIK THE ENGINEER
While the magnetic flux through a closed surface is always zero, the magnetic flux through an open surface need not be zero and is an important quantity in electromagnetism.

Ulrik looked up from where he was working on the sentinels, motion catching in the corner of his eye. The Engineer, halted his progress for the moment, as the blue prints in his mind for these colossal machines would require much effort and more calculation that he was accustomed to. Something this large needed to very carefully follow the natural laws of the earth lest it be easily felled and easily abused by the elements. Still, the frame for the first stood, a tall, stiff, metal structure in the abstract shape of a horse with no extra bones.

He had found the Illynx's presence was not entirely unwelcome as he worked. Her comings and goings were normal, and as such, he had not noticed at first when she had appeared. Only when the white motion in his periphery had caught his attention did he lift his head, wind catching in the thick fibers of his unruly beard. Ulrik shifted his weight from where he had been slightly hunched and picked up his tall, lean and muscular frame, striding with a natural, brutally graceful ease. Such large, dark creatures had no right to move with as much subtlety as the Engineer managed.

What he had realized was that a pale, ornately built unicorn had been dancing around, and he furrowed his brows. He was unused to such frivolous action with no purpose. Ulrik would never truly understand the desire to do anything to make himself happy. Work brought him satisfaction and pride which was his equivalent to joy and happiness. The stallion, though capable of such complexity and wild thoughts, was actually quite simple in his needs and wants.

Ulrik watched the mare stop dancing and approach Illynx, and he strode over to them, listening to the conversation. The stallion raised a brow at her very ignorant query. She did not know anyone lived in the north? He stood, quiet and menacing, easily towering over the two of them, bitter wind rustling in the thick fur that ran from his jaws to his chest, cloven hooves easily managing the slick snow. The stallion's long, tassled, lion's tail curled around behind him as he rested on one hip.

Why had she been wasting so much energy flitting about? "You are in the borderlands of the Aurora Basin," he said, tones deep, guttural and buried in madness. "And far from alone." Ulrik's bronze eyes with green flecks in the metallic sheen watched her, saw the way her hair was so carefully braided. Though simple in color, the shape of her body gave her a certain beauty that was undeniable, even for the Engineer.
