every day the gods are flipping coins

When she had left, everything had happened so quickly. Even though she had disappeared in the dead of night, they had seen her. How could they not? Under the light of the full moon, her skin was lit like a beacon, and there were always eyes watching her. Children that thought she was mystical, and the elders that had thought she was someone else since birth- they were always watching her. For years she had suspected that they wanted something from her because of their stares. Stares that came from beady black eyes. Soon they were nothing more than eyes, always watching her and wanting to hear stories of her past. Her past that, she thought, never truly existed.

They had said that she had saved many, that she was a heroine and a healer, that she had guided them from danger and lead them to water when there was none to drink. Yet Liit remembered little of these things actually happening. In her memories, she saw another dual-horned woman, with dark skin and weary, old eyes that had done all these feats. Not her, that person could not have possibly been her. Yet when she had fled, they had followed her, watching her pale skin glitter through the darkness until she managed to outrun them. Liit had heard calls of her name in the middle of the night for many nights as she slowly slipped further and further, disappearing into the darkness and finding that one day the calls had just stopped.

Suddenly, in the silence, she realized that not only was she completely alone, but she was free. There was no one to stalk her and stuff strange stories into her head until they were true. She was alone, and she found a sort of peace in her solitude.

Eventually, she managed to wander far enough that the years had melted away and whatever memories she had had become a mix of what was and what wasn’t. She didn’t truly remember what she had done and what she had been told she had done, and instead she started living in the present. Presently, she found herself wandering amongst the trees, a great sloping hill to one side and more trees to the other. There was little more to hear save the soft trickling of a creek hidden somewhere under the greenery of the forest. Not even the birds sang and the air smelt of rainfall that fell a few hours before her arrival. They must have been hiding, or perhaps she was going deaf.

It did not matter to her where she was, so instead of wondering what had brought her here, she pushed forwards, her dark hooves cutting through the pieces of the forest that had fallen from the trees and the small plants that managed to grow here despite the lack of sunlight. Liit had decided it was best to find the creek that sung through the trees for her. Once she was there and she had drank her fill, perhaps she would decide how to proceed.
