There were always certain apprehensions and concerns that followed on the heels of a trip into another herd land, especially when Roland knew the reputation the Basin carried with them, and that things had not always run smoothly between their herd and the past Weyrleaders. But as they awaited the final representatives, Roland hoped that they might yet make an alliance with the denizens of the white cliffs. He was calmed by the heat of the sun and the knowledge that they had not been turned away yet, and conversation ran smoothly between their leaders.

That was until their commerce was suddenly cut short by an urgent call, and when Roland looked towards its source he was met with the sight of a winged creature hurtling towards his face, wings spread and claws brandished. He took a step back, tensing in preparation to dodge or parry even as his eyes widened in shock, but Lena came to his rescue before it could meet with the sharp end of his horn. She stepped quickly in front of him, and much to Roland’s distress, placed herself right in harm’s way. His heart leapt in apprehension, for he would rather have taken any wounds and lesions dealt by the irate creature than see her harmed by its talons. But before it could reach either of them, the drake’s anger was abruptly curbed by the stern voice of its bonded, and Valiance drew reluctantly away before it could lay a claw upon its targets.

Bewilderment turned to amusement as Lena spun to catch his eye. In spite of the nervous pulse of his heart, his composure faltered for a breath and he returned her hidden smile, a mere quirk of his lips while in her shadow, until his face was no longer hidden by her form. “It’s quite alright,” he assured the Moon Doctor, offering a forgiving grin to the newcomer and her companion as Lena backed away from him.

The incident was quickly forgotten, and Roland was then swept up in the exchange that followed between his Lady and the King of the Edge. Introductions were made, for which Roland bowed his head politely, but did not speak. Their company had gathered in more numbers than the Foothills, and Roland felt somewhat smothered beneath their collective gaze, with the glass wall looming at his side, crumbling though it was. It was not nervousness that stayed his tongue, but there was a certain comfort found in reticence, and he knew there was no need to draw their meeting on with irrelevant remarks. Thus their conversation led to the matter of the Regime, of which Roland himself knew inconveniently little. He had not been there to receive Arah and her children when they returned home, much to his regret. But the group was in search of a home, and were not above driving others from their lands in order to find one. Beyond that, he could say nothing, and so looked to Illynx to fill them in.
