Somehow, I realized that I was cold and wet—my mind drifted past the fog of unreality, past the leering creatures of dreamscape and darkness. I opened my eyes, and viewed earth from a fuzzy, slanted perspective. Head was mushed into the dirt, sloppy and wet. Fur matted and tangled, I twitched, blinking in and out of consciousness. “M-m-mom-ma,” soundless voice crooked weakly, searching with thoughts for her warmth, her presence. I kept expecting that at any moment now, those silver orbs would loom over me—a warm cloak would descend. I’d lean into that comforting voice. It was raining, lightly—a cool drizzle that was more mist than droplets. A dark early morning sky loomed overhead; the sun hadn’t made it to the horizon yet. With an effort I raised my crown to look around, bending over under the weight of gravity that seemed so unfamiliar to me. “M-m-moooma?” mind was sharping, growing stronger now, though the voice that crept from this fractured soul was forevermore a soundless whimper that was reaching nobody. I shivered, slowly giving way to lie back in the mud. Too weak to rise, too tired to fight at full strength. Like a newborn babe I lay still, though this body was far from childlike by appearance. Nostril’s flared, drawing in the scents around me—the taste of mountain pine. “Da?” The drum of heaven shook the sky and I trembled violently, unknowingly sliding ears back before lids slide shut in an attempt to travel back into that other place. Quiet. Safety. |
