every day the gods are flipping coins

The soft patter of the raindrops filled the air around her, her back turned on the trunk of the tree, her dark eyes searching uselessly into the wet din that fell around her. It reminded her a little of home, and how the air had smelt when she had been old enough to remember that rain, wet grass and rock all had their own unique, wet smells in the rain. Flustered by the quick pace that had found her under the tree in time, the mare’s breath is still slightly laboured with a voice cuts through the sound of rainfall behind her. Twitching to one side and turning her pale head rather suddenly in the direction of the voice, she is confronted with a rather astonishingly red and winged mare, rather different from what she had seen so far in Helovia.

Casting a quick glance across the ruby skin of the strange mare, Liit took a moment to drink in her appearance before replying. “You and me both, it seems.” She adds in soft agreement to having just managed to avoid the full force of the drizzle that was quickly growing into a torrential downpour. Before the pale mare has enough time to question the red mare as to her reasoning for being out here, though she assumed the red was here for just as unimportant or needless of a visit as Liit’s own, there was a shadow that seemed to fall across their hooves and the strong, wet smell of dirt and damp leather cut the air between the two mares, horned and winged. Twisting her head to look at the newcomer, the mottled mare manages a swift and careful step to the side, giving the stallion a wide berth and taking note that this was the first male she had seen in these lands since her arrival.

If he was the best specimen out there, perhaps Liit was soon to be sorely disappointed when she started searching for courtships.

The stallion speaks up, and the pale mare tosses a somewhat surprised look momentarily in the direction of the winged woman. Once she was looking back at the horned stallion, she blinks and answers, no doubt before the red stranger has a chance. “I’m sure we could say the same about you.” Though the rain had done it’s work on the stallion’s dark skin, it seemed there were still remnants of mud and what looked like blood, still woven into the creases of his fur and roughening the edges of his coat, leaving Liit to assume that the smell he complained of must have belonged to him.
