A lone man loved by none:

How long can he live?

A year. It had been a year since he'd last run into the white mare so in need of his help. Almost a year since what had come after...and Torleik had not seen her since, though he thought of her often. Did she ever think of him? Did she ever wonder how and what he was doing, as he did of her?

After all, it had been her vulnerability that had seduced him, and his loneliness that had agreed to try to show her (and himself; he couldn't deny that) that lovemaking could be pleasant. Surely that warranted a thought here or there?

Given that Brisa hadn't suddenly reappeared in his life earlier, letting him know their indiscretion had resulted in his becoming a highly unprepared father, Torleik had some confidence that nothing had resulted of their union. With a frown on his scarred lips, he also realized that nothing had resulted from their union - they hadn't spoken or set eyes on each other in a damned year!

Granted, he'd been fairly busy, challenging for Basin leadership, winning a tournament to become General, being captured by the fucking Regime... Torleik sighed and couldn't help but smile a little as Irelyn alighted on the middle of his head. She did that to comfort him, and he enjoyed it. Being part feline, Irelyn was capable of purring, and the dual-horned stallion liked the soft, rhythmic vibration in his skull. It helped to drown out the bad thoughts.

But her purring and soft, warm weight on his head could not block out what he saw, and Torleik's entire body stiffened when the information from his eyeballs reached his brain.

Speak of the devil.

Brisa's white form was before him, though certainly not as slender as he'd remembered. Not slender at all. She was round and heavy around her girth and an interesting sort of feeling crawled up Torleik's chest. She was with child. Obviously not by him; it had been far too long for that. Taking slow, deliberate steps towards the mare, he paused some feet away, but well within her line of sight. Were those flames on her body? Blue flames? His tension only increased.

"Brisa," he said stiffly, having nothing else to say at that moment. What was there to say? Certainly not the thoughts swirling in his head.
