If Roland expected to be immediately enlightened as to the nature of his leader’s request, he was disappointed. Instead her initial response left him more puzzled than before and, bemused, Roland flicked his gaze between Lady and Time Mender. Perhaps Lena knew which path the GildedBlade intended to lead their conversation down, or perhaps she was just as lost as he was. For a brief second he thought he caught a glint of uneasiness in the bay mare’s eyes, and it set his heart hammering nervously in his chest. It hardly occurred to him to be flattered by the compliment when there was no telling what might be said next. Illynx’s following laugh was neither heartening nor discouraging, and so he awaited her elaboration with a deliberately patient expression on his face, ignoring the urge to tilt his head in confusion or hurriedly assure her that whatever he’d done wrong could surely be fixed.

Despite the years he’d spent in the Basin, Roland had always felt like an underdog. He lived amongst the shadows, for in his line of work it was easy to grow accustomed to operating beneath notice. That she referred to him as helpful was promising. His efforts had not gone unnoticed, and perhaps, while his dedication was not quite trumpeted to the hills as it was whispered through small missions and duties, she was aware of his loyalty and the bond he had formed with the herd.

Her proposal set him off balance, and if Roland were not so practiced in the art of composure he might have done more to show his surprise than simply blinking at her for a moment. His eyes widened a fraction, and he glanced at Lena before settling his gaze upon their Lady. There were many goals he’d entertained throughout the years, and his activity in the war that tore apart his birth home was proof of his aspirations and ambitions, and of the fact that every once and a while he could be moved to chase a foolish dream.

There had also been a time when he’d given up on the concepts of family and home; usually his job would catch up with him, and he would be forced to move on, toting a new name and different story but always the same face. The Basin had surprised him around every corner, offering him all the things he had never dared to hope for again. And, while the title might have seemed daunting, he would welcome the challenge. “It would be an honour, my Lady,” he responded, a modest smile tugging at his lips. “I am pleased to accept.
