Their journey across the more northern reaches of Helovia had been fulfilling, and now Roland walked alongside his companions in a satisfied silence, admiring the scenery as their home came into view. Greenery was finally beginning to swallow out the whites and ice blues of winter, and amongst the vibrant grasses bobbed small wildflowers, trembling as the wind caught against their petals. He was only shaken from his appreciation of the sun and all it offered when Illynx caught him unawares with a question, and a troubling one at that, for it was apparently of enough importance to warrant a halt.

He gave her a searching look, for he has never been one to glaze over the fine print, and surely the GildedBlade had something in mind when she asked. Perhaps it was only curiousity, or the want for simple conversation to keep the silence at bay, but it could be more. Promotion? Demotion? Nervousness stirred in his chest as he tilted his head to look towards Lena, recalling his first days within Helovia. She had found him, wander weary and out of sorts, and told him of the Basin. Even after having declined her offer, the idea of the northern kingdom had settled heavily into the back of his mind until he finally decided to see it himself. Though the idea had been intimidating, he thought it might be time to try his hand at growing roots, for it had been too long since he’d had a real home.

He’d doubted his ability to settle at first. The mountains were too tall, and the wind too chilling. As a child he had known only smoothly rolling fields and lush copses of trees. The summers were hot and the winters gentle. It wasn’t long after pinning the title of Phantom to his name that he was being battered by snowstorms and growing a frighteningly thick winter coat. It had tested his patience, his resilience. He had quickly grown skeptical of his herd mates, and the not so hidden hatred of other species that many of them seemed to bear, and there had been many times when he’d wondered if this truly was the place for him. But somewhere along the way, things had fallen into place.

A rocky start at first, wandering unawares into the midst of their home with not so much as a glance at their boundaries, and he supposes the hot springs may forever be associated with his name and face. But the other herds had also known their share of turmoil in the years passed. He was no better off in the World’s Edge than he was in the Basin. Eventually he’d found that there was not only bloodlust and bigotry running in the veins of his new family; he fit quite well with them, after all, since his living was made off of dishonesty and deceit.

And just how long had it been? Too long, or not long enough? It seemed an age ago, the troublesome events leading up to his arrival sharper in his mind than his acceptance into the herd, but he had not forgotten entirely. “Just shy of two years, I do believe,” he replied, crooking a small smile at Illynx. Wherever the question may lead, he was prepared. If it was just a passing interest of hers, he would not be disappointed. He would not expect anything from a family that had given him more than he could have hoped for.
