Both into the darkness and out of it again some time later, Mesec had followed his mother without hesitation. He knew full well that he would do what she asked - especially if it was something so easy as being with her, following where she bid him. They had been together in the darkness for so long - at first he had missed the heat of the day but that was quickly weaned out of him. There was comfort in darkness that was not present in the garish light of day.

The child stood beside his mother on that precipice and though her heart did not wrench at the height of the cliff they were standing on, his did. But it was not the vertigo that caused that twist - their return to the grounds of Helovia could only mean one thing. He suspected that their time together would be coming to an end and it felt bittersweet. This was what he had wanted ever since she had first left him with his father - to spend time with her, to be the focus of her attention and learn whatever she could teach him. But he had left during a turbulent time and though the darkness and the sickness did not frighten him, not anymore, there were friends that had been left behind, family that had uncertain fates.

His thoughts returned to the present as she spoke, encouraging him in her own way. She wanted him to be a creature of darkness, to command the elements that he was born of - though his heart was not so easily cast aside. He still hoped that he could have both, that he did not need to cut away everything that made him hurt or joyful in order to embrace this side of him.

Mesec wondered if his cousins were as conflicted as he was about everything. Still, she was his mother and he wanted her to be proud of him. One day. He was more her blood than most and she was more akin to him than any of the others who walked this land. “I’ll remember that. Thank you, mother.” He did feel more confident now, more complete, and he wondered how long this feeling would last now that he was back. With a small smile he reached out to touch her softly on the shoulder as a farewell. Not a long gesture, he knew how much she would not appreciate that, but he needed something even if she did not. There was nothing else to say - his breath would be wasted on asking for more time.

Then the shadows gathered around him so he might leave - not wanting to have to watch her depart from him yet again.
