How is it that he couldn't seem to stay away? Twice now he'd retreated beyond the borders of Helovia when times seemed strange and unmanageable, and yet he just... kept coming back. It was what he wondered about as he lay in the shade of a tree, absently observing the woods of the threshold forest. Before, he had simply gone back north, returned to the Basin without much thought. And he'd run into unfriendly faces, instead of the mare he thought he could call friend. He didn't even know if Illynx was still up there in the snow and the ice.

So he lingered here, drowsing in the tallsun heat, sleeping on the subject of what he should do next. Little did he know that his concerns of where to travel next were shortly going to be on the back of his mind, for there was a new twist in his life arising. For tucked into the roots of the tree he rested against, buried by a layer of twigs and dirt, was an egg. And that egg was hatching, shuddering and rocking as the creature within struggled to get out. The small sounds of its escape were muffled by the rustle of leaves and branches above in a sudden gust of wind.

The first that the lean stallion knew of his impending guardianship to a young creature was when a warm tongue licked his muzzle. Green eyes flew open in surprise as he stared at the guilty party in front of him. It was small, and furry, and distinctly canine. He didn't know that this pup was hatched from a companion's egg, and that when it had scrambled out of where its egg had rested, he had been the first thing it had seen. All he knew was that a puppy had licked him.

"Go on, fluffy one, your mom must be around here somewhere and missing you." He reached out a dark liver muzzle to gently nudge the pup away, and lurched to his hooves. Better to find a place where he wouldn't be woken up by curious puppies. But a sharp yap and a scurrying sound had him looking back, to see the pup scrambling to keep up with him. "What do you want? I don't have anything for you." Somewhat amused, but exasperated all the same, the stallion reached for his magic. Conveniently it grasped onto a beetle that was crawling away from the disturbance of hooves and paws, and made the bug in question grow to proportions that some would call monstrous. It was more than enough to distract a puppy with the novelty, and the chestnut unicorn strode away, confident that he'd be able to put enough distance between himself and the pest of a dog before the magic wore off.

But no, as soon as the puppy noticed him walking away, it raced to catch up again, yapping excitedly in what very easily could be translated into Did you see that? That was so cool! But the individual in question, whose ears were meant to be recipient to that excited joy, felt only a growing exasperation. This time he reached for another form of his magic, doubling his form as he continued to walk away. The double stopped, but the puppy didn't. It dashed past the illusion without any doubt of which unicorn it should be following.

It was this failure to be fooled that earned a grudging admiration from the lean stallion, who finally turned around to regard the puppy. "I'm stuck with you, aren't I?" A half smile quirked at his lips when the puppy, which he now realized was a coyote and not just a dog, yipped in seeming agreement. Leaning down his dark muzzle again, he allowed the pup to bound up and lick him again. It was then, only then, that he felt the realization of a bond between himself and this small creature that would not stay so small for very long. It was a warm, fulfilling sensation that left a dazed and somewhat confused expression in those green eyes that normally missed nothing.

Baffled, he peered down at the pup, and guffawed at the smug way the little coyote sat before him and gazed back at him. He got the distinct impression from the pup that his own mind interpreted into meaning About time, stupid. in the way he was being stared at. "Well excuse me for not realizing that you were something more special than just a wayward puppy, little one." He muttered in self defense, not entirely sure how much the youngster understood. "Guess that means I should give you a name, instead of just calling you 'little one'..." Or puppy, or pest, no matter how true they were. "Ah.... Mikasi then." Fortunately the pup seemed to agree, for its, no - his, tail began to thump wildly against the ground.

The stallion couldn't help but laugh, reaching out to give his new and entirely unexpected companion a light but firm enough nudge that sent the pup sprawling into a happily squirming and yapping pile. For the moment, at least, all concerns were forgotten in the novelty of the moment.
