It had been responsibility that kept the dove in her desert home, but now it was responsibility that drew her out. As much as she may have felt that her place was with the herd, they did not have the numbers to properly patrol the wild-lands, and that was a task that had become necessary. She could not shake the feeling that Helovia's darkness had not finished with them quite yet, nor could she quite trust the other herds. Midas and the Asylum had allied with them, it was true, but although she adored Midas, the was unsure how helpful the Asylum had the potential to be. Mental illness was not something that she had experience with, and as she had yet to visit the Hidden Falls, she had yet to find herself able to make an informed decision. They had won the Falls, though - surely that had to count for something? Even so, she felt entirely unprepared. They patrolled as often and as widely as they could, but it did not seem to be enough. They had not received as much information as she would have liked, be it from the other herds or from the outcasts roaming the land. I never thought I would be one for plotting and spying. It was a rueful thought, one that Astraeus responded to with a rush of affection. He had yet to learn the art of mind-speech, but it was rare that the dove did not understand his intentions. Just now, he offered reassurance that she was doing the best that she could, which was, of course, quite true - and yet, she still managed to feel entirely inadequate. She sighed, frustrated, and flapped her wings several times to rise above a low-hanging cloud. Below, a thin veil of mist covered the land. Luckily, she was quite familiar with the area over which she flew, having visited the Heavenly Fields quite a few times. It was a realm of memory, for without having ventured to the flattened peak, she would never have met Rowan and would never have joined the Dragon's Throat. Everything that she had done and been through since then had hinged on that single moment; it was incomprehensible to imagine what might have occurred had she chosen to simply keep going. She considered doing so again, if only to avoid the onslaught of emotion that was sure to come; but in the end, she folded her wings and fell from the sky, as she was so prone to do, Astraeus trailing her in a burst of sparks. She landed with tears in her eyes and struggled, for a moment, to swallow the pain that she associated with this place. Luckily, it seemed that she was blissfully alone for the moment. It was a blessing and a curse, for she needed to see others to gain information, but she certainly didn't want to see anyone else like this. She closed her eyes and inhaled, held, and exhaled, waiting for serenity to return. "Talk talk talk." @[Gaucho] |
