EREBOS

The little beast didn’t notice the particular drone of silence, the slithering, wafting discord from foal to foal, creature to creature, intertwining his attention back upon the thrashing orb Adelric had brought, clutched, and protected. Curiosity, an unending, constant flame, lingered along the throes of his archaic, indulgent intrigue, questioning, plotting, while twisting his eyes back and forth as the egg careened and flailed. What was contained inside? Was it something strong, chaotic, rumbling its distaste at its shelled home? Was it a monster, dragged from crypt to crypt, immersed in spell to spell, drowned and thrown by a neighboring, eldritch wand? Was it a gift from the heavens, blessing Adelric with his good fortune and kindness? Suddenly, he felt quite compelled to have his own, clutch it in the palm of his boldness, of his audacity, watch and witness, guard and hold, the sanctity of something foreign, unknown, labyrinthine and enigmatic. He listened, tilting an ear towards his friend, regarding the nature of his ability to snag this heavenly bounty, solving a puzzle, but unaware of what it was. Maybe Erebos could solve a rune one day and be handed an illustrious gift, patrol, shield, and defend until it reached maturity – was that what the thing curled inside was doing now, struggling to be freed from its clutches? Excited, poised to spring or simply stare, the colt’s gaze never failed to waver from the threshold, a co-conspirator as the outer layer began to crack and fray (sadly, there was no incineration or explosion to mark the event), revealing more and more in the item’s erratic movements. The lithe prince sidled a little closer, as if it were a secret between Adelric and himself, kept and held under lock and key, afraid someone else would untangle the riddle and conundrum he so longed to decipher. But his friend bends to a worrying stint as the egg threatened to completely shatter, and Poseidon’s scion, Cinnorou’s blessed kin, with little information to go on, attempted to soothe the patchwork frailties. “I think its okay…”

Then, the moment seemed to arrive, bursting and foaming with mere fanfare and precious predilection. A dawning revelation sunk and slept within its former crater; not a behemoth, not a titan, not a rugged, smoldering glimpse of evil or melancholy, but a tiny deer-like character, awakening within the world, burdened with resolute purpose. Backing away, ensuring Adelric had the right glimpse, the ability and space to form some bond or snare with the nestled babe, Erebos gaped in wonder, repeating nearly the same query as before, yearning to gain more answers, more insight, than mere observations permitted. “What is it?” Then, with an eager, emboldened smile, he utilized his maw to pat Adelric upon the shoulder, a reception for the newly begotten. “Congratulations! Looks like you did a good job protecting it.” He winked, as if he’d never have any doubts over his companion’s blackguard abilities, chasing it with another inquiry, mind hastening and swarming with a collection of them, eager to drown in divulgences. “What’re you going to call it?”
