He suppressed a smile of mingled sadness and amusement at her bewildered expression, unwilling to admit how worrisome he finds her lack of.. well he didn't even know what it was he found lacking. Sense of adventure perhaps? Independence, spirit, that daredevil streak he'd once thought he'd seen in both of the twins - the kind of bravery and desire for action that oftentimes lure foals (and no few older horses) into the kind of trouble that results in a scolding. Someone else might have been impressed by the young mare's willingness to go from point A to point B without detours, pauses or seemingly even curiosity over where the other paths lead that so often appeared along the road... but Lace knew from experience that nothing you did in life was simple or easy. No plans ever proceeded smoothly without a hitch, and the smallest of pebbles could cause enormous amounts of grief if you didn't learn early on how to deal with them. He hadn't, and look where it had brought him.
It was an especially serious lack for someone who pondered over immortality. A wry smile slipped over his mouth as Amaris touched the subject, the silver-coated stallion grimly recalling the past winter when he, befuddled and weak from the painful illness, had tried to kill himself to get away from it all. He remembered laying broken and dying among the rocks beneath a tall cliff, ribs crushed and skull shattered, Fajira's panicked screams as she finally had managed to find him after their long separation - he remembered how, instead of succumbing to darkness and peace he had remained like that while his body slowly repaired itself. Broken bones had mended, ruptured and bleeding muscles had knitted back together, and after a few days of food and drink even his blood had replenished itself to normal levels. Not a scar had been left to bear witness of the gruesome puncture wounds where the ribs had broken out of the skin, no discoloration of the coat, no nothing. He looked the same as he had done when he jumped, the same as he looked now.
"Immortality is overrated" he grunted with some strain in the voice and gave her a surreptitious glance from the side, nose returning to the ground and the dewy grass between words. "Not sure if there even is such a thing... Everything dies, girl. Even the gods, even though they're reluctant to admit it." "Some things just die harder" Fajira agreed silently and came swooping over to them, pale body glittering with water and scales in the golden sunlight. She scattered water all around as she flitted between them like an oversized fly, tittering joyously as Lace swatted after her with a silky tail. "Talk about something funner" she commanded, the tone as imperious as her eyes; and like a queen settles into her throne to watch the jesters below she attempted to settle on Amaris' rump. Since, as she graciously let her bonded know, it provided the highest vantage point.
"I see" Lace mumbled with glittering eyes, smirking impishly back at the dragon. "Fajira says you have a big butt, Amaris" the grullo noted helpfully. "She suggests that Father Earth might have hid the mountains behind it..." The smile turned slightly wicked as he eyed the golden girl to see how she would react.
