He wouldn't have been able to say what he felt for the filly himself, had anyone taken to ask. It was a jumbled mess of emotions, a bond that was both feeble and fragile - no more than wishful thinking and a few childhood memories, a notion of responsibility and perhaps a wish for something that could have been... It was a ribbon of glass, a paper thin bridge surrounded by harsh winds and stormy waters, and the stallion was treading carefully as he tried to cross to the other side.

Her touch, her playful words laced with seriousness and concern brought him out of the daze like someone might rouse a man from his sleep. Blinking as though he had been in a place much darker than the fading light of day, he gazed first at the girl and then over towards the dragons, feeling conversation pass between them yet unable to hear the words... For a second he was tempted to spill whatever words, what questions he had that burned on the tongue and weighed down the soul. He wanted to hear her thoughts, to speak of more serious things and see if this child would be able to guide him to a happier state of mind.
Fajira protested so vigorously against having her happy happy fun time interrupted by boring nonsense, as she saw it, and so he allowed Amaris to distract him from his brooding.

The smile he offer her is slow at first, almost reluctant - then, in a sudden flash of motion that responds to her 'innocent' offer of enlarging his arse he buck sharply and lash out with the hind legs as soon as the front re-connects with the ground. Aiming the light kick towards her own flank - without really expecting it to land, considering the angle - Lace then bolts off with a laugh, shrugging off his glum musings with a determination that earned him some rare praise from the White.

"You have to catch me first!" And the race was on.

It wasn't until the sun had lowered so far towards the horizon that the glade had become dusky and dark, the trees casting their long shadows across the waters and Lace collapsed onto the cool grass with his chest heaving and legs splayed over the ground, that he allowed himself to re-visit the previous pondering. Declaring himself exhausted and unable to run anymore, he stretched out and pressed against the solid, unmoving soil as if in a loving embrace, rubbing chest and back and a charred cheek as if to dye himself in its colors. Gradually his breathing calmed, and with the scent of grass and trees and water and sun in his nose he glanced over at Amaris with a slow, soft smile.

"What are you planning to do now, Amaris?" he asked quietly, voice hushed so as not to break the peace that was settling over the glen. "Are you going back to the Edge, or will you be looking for something new? Tell me what you want from this life." Tell me if I can be a part of it, no matter how small. But he didn't voice that thought.
